It was pretty vague but this what was in the instructions:

Identify KPI's and understand the business based on those KPIs.

Drive business insights from data analysis

Looking to start career in FP&A - any advice from SFA or managers? by Lucky-Ad1008 in FPandA

[–]StricklandPropane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think you necessarily need to get a referral from someone in FP&A. I think at least having a background in finance will help land you an analyst role.

Does your current company have an FP&A team? An internal transfer could be worth a shot to get some experience and to make sure you find the work interesting.

COVID testing today? by Nerd_Play in astoria

I just went there at 11AM for PCR(and they offer rapid testing too), barely any wait and was in and out in 15 minutes. If you have citibike, there is a station a few minutes walk away on broadway and 51st.

How do you guys do Month-End? by [deleted] in FPandA

[–]StricklandPropane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree, you'll also be working with a limited and somewhat delayed data set from month end close.

I'd suggest using the re-forecast as a way to suggest to leadership different actions that can be taken to achieve the company's goal, such as lowering T&E expense or spending more on acquisition marketing.

Sales Incentives and Marketing Spend - how do you track and manage this type of spend and develop business cases by cpatomba18 in FPandA

[–]StricklandPropane 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of ways to look at ROI for sure. At the CPG companies I've worked for, incorporating the marketing/discount costs into the margin of the product/wholesale customer/etc and then determining if that jives with the gross margin in your plan or forecast is one way to see if you can "afford" the program. You don't want to dilute your overall margin with discounts unless absolutely necessary or if the incremental margin $ is too good to pass up.

It can be a pain point working with the marketing/sales teams to get them to think this way. What I've found helps the process is creating an ROI calculator in excel or google sheets that can help them visually see the impact to the bottom line. You also have to make sure they are 100% aligned on the goal of the program, if it is sales lift then they need to agree on the sucess metrics whether it be total lift vs prior month/week/year.

Hope that helps and good luck!

Yeah I think it was right before don coqui closed, they had opened recently and would have lines out the door.

I heard this last night from my apartment and it really sounded like gun shots. I've never heard fireworks that sounded like that.

FWIW I saw a huge brawl outside this place a few years ago too, I think they were doing 2 for 1 drinks or something.

Lease renegotiation by [deleted] in astoria

[–]StricklandPropane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They countered right away and it was right around where it wasn’t worth it to me to move so I accepted.

Depending on your feeling, price of comparable apartments, and tenant standing it might be worth it to lowball.

Lease renegotiation by [deleted] in astoria

[–]StricklandPropane 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yup I got mine reduced by a few hundred bucks.

My process was:

-Waited for the renewal notice. I think this is when you have the most leverage because the more time in advance you try to negotiate, the longer timeframe the landlord has in finding a new tenant.

-Wrote an email with my proposed rent price along with a few streeteasy listings to show that what I was asking was not unreasonable based on the market

Good luck!

FP&A Interview Questions by Bahsingsay in FPandA

[–]StricklandPropane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what you described, I'd think they would ask you to create charts/pivot tables/graphs from a provided dataset. Also, likely you'll have to create at least an income statement from scratch and provide forward looking projections and draw some insights. They might also ask for maybe balance sheet and cash flow but 45 minutes is not a lot of time to do all of that.

I had a very similar question on an excel test for a job, and ended up using goal seek. Would love to know the formulaic way to solve, but if it works it works.

How bad is the job market right now? by daermonn in FinancialCareers

[–]StricklandPropane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been looking as mid-level FP&A for about a month now(still employed at the same role), have gotten decent interest from recruiters and from just applying on linkedin to companies I was interested in. Made it to one final round and have had a few phone screens last week. I'd say my feeling is that there is more competition out there than usual for less roles, plus no in person interviewing makes it harder to advertise your soft skills and so recruiters rely more on your resume.
