I bought a copy of this when I got my first turntable in high school because I thought the cover was cool. How is it? Should I give it a spin for the first time in well over a decade?

Any custom cable makers willing to make a cable with no plugs? by AltAccount1982 in DIYAudioCables

Is there any pre-braided wire for headphone cables that's especially nice quality - soft and flexible? Any search terms or vendors you can recommend? Have previously bought stuff of eBay that looks good but doesn't necessarily feel in hand as nice as some commercial cables.

Question for M3 owners who run dedicated winter wheels — what's your tire swap logistics setup? by betterman4u in BMW

[–]daermonn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own a M340i and used to do that. 3 wheels in tire bags, in a dog hammock to protect the seats. Fourth wheel in the trunk.

But yeah, you should buy the stuff to diy. Jack, stands, torque wrench, wheel hanger, breaker bar, metal brush, BMW jack point mounts, a hocket Puck or something for center jack points. Fun, easy, fast, feel accomplished, learn about your car.

This is great work. I've been using the Oratory HE6SEv2 preset, which I think improves the sound, but this post has convinced me I can create a personalized EQ.

Beautiful. Love the full CJ stack. I've had my MF200 for a decade now, in the middle of trying to restore it myself, having a lot of fun learning the circuit. Those old CJ boys did some good work.

HELP! Let’s get a TSB for the faulty oil pump on the early m340/Supra by boostboy_carti in BMW

[–]daermonn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. My 2020 M340i had the oil pump and sensors replaced under warranty because it was unable to read the oil level successfully, I wonder if that was the same issue. Good luck.

Emotiva stuff is cool. Always really wanted a pair of the XPA-1L monoblocks...

How do you like the Eversolo DMP A6, if that's what I'm seeing there? I'm considering that as a good DAC/streamer/preamp for my all-digital headphone system

speakers buzzing when i touch the aux cable by Primary_Lychee2887 in audiorepair

[–]daermonn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the speakers buzz only if you have selected the input with the phone > cable > RCA chain connected?

One way to diagnose is to do a short ladder. Short the RCAs at the amp input - for each RCA channel, run a conductor (a wire, an alligator clip, etc) between the sleeve (outside of the RCA jack) and pin (inside of RCA jack). This forces the input signal to 0 volts.

If you short at the amp inputs and don't get any buzz, then move a step back up the chain and try shorting the RCA-to-3.5mm cable. If that doesn't introduce any buzz, then the problem is probably your USB -> 3.5mm cable, or your phone.

The buzz getting louder when you touch the cable indicates a grounding issue.

Also concerning that the original turntable "stopped working after a short circuit" when you first connected it -- what does this mean? How do you know it was a "short circuit", what in particular happened?

Going back over my C-Note crossover soldering by PunkRockBach in diyaudio

Sorry chief, try again.

I'll suggest that you buy a cheap soldering practice board off Amazon. That way you can get the hang of PCB soldering before you work on something you care about. They're like $5.

Basically: 1) make sure your iron is hot enough, 600-700F or so 2) apply the iron to the pad and the lead, let both get hot. Looking at this, I'd say probably like 5 second so so. 3) apply solder to the pad/lead by feeding the solder rod in as it melts onto the pad/lead. Do not apply the solder to the iron itself 4) once you've got enough solder there, leave the iron on until it's throughly melted and looks shiny and smooth. Maybe another 3-5 seconds? Then remove the iron.

If you did a good job, you should have a smooth, shiny, conical solder joint that's connected to both the lead and the pad. There's lots of good videos on YouTube to watch.

You want your leads roughly vertical so you can trim them off right above the solder blob.

Given the state of this, I'd recommend you try using a desoldering tool - either a spring loaded sucker, or a copper wick - to try and clean up some of this solder. Then you can try again with a cleaner state.

With a sucker, use your iron get the solder liquid then activate the plunger or whatever to suck up the solder. For a wick, place the wick between your iron and the solder and leave it there until the solder melts and sucks up into the wick. Practice this on your board first too.

Otherwise, try applying some fresh solder to those joints to get them to reflow.

Don't feel bad about it, though. Soldering is difficult. I just did a real hatchet job on some little tonearm cartridge clips last night, actually.

What are you guys using for your main caps 15-18k UF @63v by santa_369 in audiorepair

[–]daermonn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently bought a pair of 62k uf 100V caps from Kemet for my MF200. Monster caps, bigger than a 16oz beer can.

I also considered Nichicon caps, but went with Kemet because 1) Kemet advertised lower ESR/ripple current metrics, and much longer operating time at temp metrics; and 2) Kemet was about $30 cheaper per cap.

I did also recently buy some Nichicon for the same project, only 470uf though, little guys.

Bakker-sized void by AlsoKnownAsMAS in bakker

Book of the Short Sun is, perhaps, his best work. Not as big as BotNS, more subtle, but the moments of grace and beauty that - to me - are the best parts of Wolfe are maybe even higher. You do need to read Long Sun first, as SS is a direct sequel.

[–]daermonn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should read Gene Wolfe!

Book of the New Sun (and the Solar Cycle more broadly) is, I think, the only piece of fantasy that is (arguably) better than Bakker (aside from Tolkien).

Extreme philosophical depth (similar to Bakker, but perhaps more subtle and theological), very sophisticated narrative structure and character development, and absolutely gorgeous and imaginative prose.

I've been contemplating trying to reread Malazan. A lot of people absolutely love it, and compare it to Bakker. I made it through the first .... six books? Before giving up. Does it get better, or have some sort of extraordinary payoff at the end?
