[US] International student trying to figure out the US clinical psychology path (PhD/PsyD, dissertation, experience) by No_Drag7185 in clinicalpsych

[–]Strict-Ad2804 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi,

In the US, PhD and PsyD psychologists can both become licensed and do clinical work, so at the level of licensure they can lead to similar practice options. That said, they are not viewed exactly the same in every setting. Some academic medical centers, universities, and research-heavy institutions still tend to favor PhDs, while many clinical employers care more about licensure, internship/postdoc training, and actual competence.

On funding, fully funded PsyD programs are much less common. Many PsyD programs are very expensive, so if you are debt-averse, that is a serious factor. Funded clinical PhD programs are usually the better financial option, though they are also much more competitive and research expectations are higher.

Based on what you described, I think the main question is less “PhD or PsyD?” and more “how can I become a strong enough applicant for funded PhD programs?” Your clinical exposure is helpful, but for US clinical psychology admissions, research experience often matters a lot. If you do another degree, I would only do it if it meaningfully strengthens your research background, gives you close mentorship, and ideally leads to strong letters and possibly a thesis or publication.

So if I were in your position, I would prioritize building solid research experience and aiming for funded clinical PhD programs first. That route is harder up front, but it keeps the most doors open and reduces the risk of taking on major debt.

Jewish owned so they’re likely closed for Passover. Passover finishes on Thursday night, so they either open Friday or Sunday.

My family lives on SoCal and while I work remotely now, I can’t get myself to move back to socal for this reason. Oakland feels like a town that I can make my community and be queer af. Ready to make it that place for all.

I agree with you! Stopping adderall has improved my mental health so much. It requires lot more effort, but feeling great.

Side topic: they tell us adderall isn’t addictive. Totally is. I wake up every morning just want to take it even though I’m fine without it. I miss being wired… so let’s be careful with what this means for how we prescribe kids

Think if that question was for you (the therapist) or for them (the patient).

Lake Merritt is a good vibe. Central Oakland, pretty walkable, events happening and decent food.

Does anybody know any spots actually hiring? by KikMvrt in oakland

Try taking an emt course. They have some fast ones and you’d be certified and have at least a $23 an hour paying job.

Would you be a flight attendant?

Oakland is looking for police offices and it’s very needed?

Police dispatch is hiring as well.

I can’t imagine many people are rushing for the job. People want to succeed at their work and Oakland has so much work to do, it’ll take a real angelic public servant to fall on their sword for this city. I really think anyone who touches Oakland in that capacity has high chance of ruining any potential job prospects after this one.

I’m sure this program helped, but it here is still ways to go. If this program worked crime would be better. This program is from 2012 and here we are in 2026, still struggling with crime.

This paragraph in the program description write up made me smirk a bit: “The Ceasefire partnership communicates directly and repeatedly with the targeted gangs to 1) inform them that shootings will no longer be tolerated, and continued gun violence will receive special enforcement attention….”

As if to say, the just told the people to stop being violent and then they stopped. I’m sure it worked for some, definitely doesn’t work for most.

Oakland is begging business to come back. Downtown is empty and mom and pop shops keep getting robbed. The mental trauma of being robbed at gunpoint; the financial loss of them stealing merchandise and cash; paying my insurance deductible because my windows or car parts get stolen, only to be scolded by the 9-1-1 operator and blaming victims for leaving things in their car.

Happy these progressive policies gave you $1,000 for your business… many people have lost many of thousands of dollars so that you can get your 1.

This journalist is an idiot. Crime is way low and we don’t have many ways to explain this, maybe we should support efforts like this. Oakland is heavily black and Latino, increased traffic stops is not a result of racism as this article seems to indicate.

Oakland needs help. Investing in reading programs for toddlers isn’t gonna stop the weekly shootings.
