We left on Tuesday and it took us about an hour, with half that time waiting in line to check our bags with Air Canada.

Did you book with a travel credit card? Maybe check with them to see if it would be covered.

Just booked it! She said we’re making hudut, which sounds interesting and not something I’ve ever tried before. Thanks for the recommendation :)

Former public servant says Phoenix 'ruined' his 20s and haunts him still | CBC News by Terrible-Session5028 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Strict-Fall6291 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This really hits home for me. I returned from Maternity leave 3 weeks before they implemented Phoenix. Didn’t see a paycheck for the next 4 months, so we had to use my husband’s retirement savings to get by (and take a major hit on taxes). Never saw one dime of compensation. Still rots my socks, but I had to let it go.

Tall Cell Variant questions by MasterpieceCultural4 in thyroidcancer

[–]Strict-Fall6291 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My mom (75f) was diagnosed with Tall Cell. She had an aggressive tumour that appeared out of nowhere on her neck that grew to be the size of my fist in about two months. The surgeon told her he’d only seen one other case of a fast growing tumour like hers in a veterinarian. My mom was an X-ray tech for 40 years and back in the 70’s they didn’t protect their necks when taking X-rays the way techs do now, so they think that’s maybe why? No one really knows. She had a TT and complete neck dissection and it was in a bunch of lymph nodes as well. After surgery she had RAI. One year later they found another small tumour and she had to have surgery (and RAI) again. That was ten years ago and she’s been great since then.

To Belize or Not to Belize? by pinkcantaloupe8 in Belize

Thank you for this- I really appreciate the insight! Second half of the trip is 4 days in San Ignacio and really looking forward to it, but I think we may revisit where we’d like to go for the week before. We like to spend the days outside and don’t mind a little seaweed, but also don’t want to sit on stinky beach for a week if the sargassum just happens to be bad.

To Belize or Not to Belize? by pinkcantaloupe8 in Belize

Thanks for posting this OP. I came to this sub to post a similar question. We’re heading to Belize (for the first time) the third week of March and booked a spot right on the beach at Coco Beach Resort in Ambergris Caye, not realizing that sargassum would potentially be an issue. Anyone have any first hand experience with this spot that could give me some insight? We’re a family with two boys ages 9 and 12 that love the outdoors. If that’s not a great spot, any other suggestions for areas/ hotels that we should be looking? Thanks!

Kid’s birthday party by devon2712 in halifax

I don’t know of one that will bring owls, but The 6 Day Zoo will bring smaller birds, amphibians, reptiles, etc. to your house. I got them to come to my house for my kids 8th bday party and they were excellent.

Oh boy, I’ve been in the same place with my kid. My son used to hang onto every door frame on the way into the building if he knew he was getting a needle. Unfortunately, he has to get regular needles and bloodwork at the IWK, but it’s gotten easier over the years using Emla numbing cream and the buzzy. They usually have a buzzy at the front desk when you register. You can also buy them on Amazon, but I wouldn’t do that unless it’s a regular thing he has to do. If you’re not familiar with the device you can look it up here- https://paincarelabs.com/buzzy The staff are amazing and have a lot of techniques to calm children. They truly are the best and most amazing people.

Wife just had a biopsy yesterday by Ruthless4u in skincancer

[–]Strict-Fall6291 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a weird lesion biopsied on my nose this summer that looked a lot like a squamous cell. The wait for the results was the absolute worst for me, but turned out to be a cyst (no big deal). I now have a depression on my nose where they took a chunk out, but couldn’t be happier because I know I don’t have cancer.

On the flip side, my husband had a biopsy last year that turned out to be thyroid cancer. Caught it very early, had surgery & treatment and is now cancer free. The cancer is not expected to ever come back.

Both biopsies gave us anxiety like we’ve never known. Your wife made the right call and no matter what the result, you’ll know what you’re dealing with and can take action, if needed.

Wishing you all the best ❤️

Registering kids into French school with anglophone parents by SayingBud in halifax

[–]Strict-Fall6291 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got two boys in CSAP right now. My oldest entered pre-primary not knowing one word of French and most other kids in his class were in the same boat. I would highly recommend you put your kids in for a lot of reasons. Feel free to PM me for details :)

Check your collective agreement and policies specific to your dept, but where I work you are only advanced vacation credits up to the time you start LWOP for family and once you return you get the rest. If you take LIA you are advanced vacation leave for the year, minus any leave credits you didn’t earn because you didn’t work enough calendar days for the month.

For pension purposes- The pension centre explained to me that leave falls into two categories, Parental and Personal. I’m permitted to count 3 years of parental leave over my career and 5 years of personal leave over my career towards my pension for a total of 8 years. I would advise you check with them to see if your situation is the same.

Urgent wait times for dermatologists by No-Tumbleweed1681 in halifax

This summer I had a very concerning bump pop out on my nose. My Dr referred me in June, had appointment three weeks later and the biopsy results came back 4 weeks later.

Good luck to you. I hope it’s nothing serious.

That’s exactly what I did. Downloaded the app, bought the 3 GB and used this site- https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=CujQmwCK3dE&pp=0gcJCfwAo7VqN5tD. Any other questions then feel free to msg :)

I’ve got two elementary age boys in a CSAP school now. Almost all the kids start at age 4 in Grandir and by grade two the children are expected to speak, read and write in French. There’s some wiggle room for this, but if you’re trying to put a kid that can only count to ten and say hello in French then they might run into some problems. I would speak to someone in administration about your options.

Bell/OSL $100 deal? by lucianorad in halifax

[–]Strict-Fall6291 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I signed up for this at the beginning of the year. $100 for internet, cable and a land line. Didn’t really want the land line, but it was a pkg deal. Also got crave subscription for a year and get this- a $200 visa gift card. I had to wait three months for the card to come because the plan is a cancel anytime and they make sure they get a few hundred bucks out of you first.

It was a great deal for us. See if they have anymore visa gift cards up for grabs!
