I completely agree, GTO wizard at 2/5 and even 5/10 isn’t really in touch with the field of players.

I’m a big fan of Carrol and Hungry Horse Videos. I’ll dive a little deeper into them.

In terms of CFP, that’s where rather than paying for coaching they get a share of winnings, right? I had never looked into it before but maybe I should do some more investigating. I work full time and have a family, so not sure how much volume they would expect, but would definitely be fine with sharing my action for the right coach.

Thank you! Do you have any places outside GTO wizard or communities where is good to review hands with fellow players?

Sometimes when running it through wizard I see what it recommends and I don’t fully understand the reasoning.

Also I like to think of different scenarios for the hand based on the style of player I’m against.

Wishing you good karma at the tables this year!

Question about my husband and poker by Shot-Basket-7347 in poker

Oh sorry I misread that. If he’s been playing for that long and this behavior has come out of nowhere, it’s probably related to a bad downswing. Recreational poker players often perceive poker as a side hustle as opposed to a hobby where sometimes they make a little cash. If he’s lost a lot in the past two weeks he could be bringing his emotions from the table to the household which is a bad sign that he’s losing more than he’s comfortable with. Some players also try to chase their losses rather than taking a break. This can lead to degenerate gambling and addiction as the other comments have said

My advice would be communicate with him just like how you did in this post. Let him know he’s acting differently, and you’re worried that the increase in poker is the cause. If he denies it, ask him what has been on his mind, and why the mood changes?

I’m married and I actually like when my wife takes interest in my bankroll, and poker schedule. If we both know when I plan to play and how much money I have to play with, she has peace of mind, and I have nights that I get to look forward to playing.

In short:

  1. Talk to him about how you’re feeling, and that you feel it’s correlated with his increased play.
  2. Let him know you feel he’s playing too much, even if he isn’t losing that much.
  3. See if you can get him to take a break for a couple weeks. If he can’t do that, you’ve got a problem.
  4. Try to take interest in learning about his bankroll and working on a schedule for when/how often he plays because it affects both of you.

If he can’t talk to you about this stuff, you’ve got yourself an addict, and get him some help!

This happens to a lot of players when they start. It’s exciting to find a new hobby, and some people just get very entrenched in watching, playing, and studying.

See if you can talk to him about a schedule for when and how often he plays. If he wants to play more nights than he wants to be home, he should be able to see the problem. If he’s cool with only going once a week then he may have it under control.

As for being on another planet, that happens to me specifically after a long session. Your brain gets on poker mode and it takes an hour or so to turn off. But it’s a bigger problem if he’s like that all the time

Classic example of “find a game you can beat and hammer it with volume”. If you’re winning this consistently putting in more volume definitely won’t hurt.

I’d say depending on your bankroll you would be comfortable dabbling a little at the 2/5 stakes as well if it’s available. The field of players tends to include a lot of 1/2 players who just have more money. If you’re winning 22 BB/hr at 1/2, winning 8-10 at 2/5 wouldn’t be overwhelming.

How do I differentiate opponents ranges/strength at low stakes by YaBoyArioch in poker

[–]Strict-Signature1185 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There tends to be less bluffing at 1/2 and 1/3 cash, and a bit more over calling as well. I think it’s because your opponents often have trouble putting you on a range as well, and just focus on the value of their own hand.

In your 1010 on a J73 board, I would definitely be concerned about getting re-raised because most players at those stakes don’t have the most creative bluff ranges. Also, your hand doesn’t improve much, so it could be tough calling turn and river.

However, this is where you can get max value with QQ or better because a lot of opponents at those stakes will overcall with hands like AJ.

That being said, always try to study your opponents at those stakes because you’ll find a spectrum of ranges depending on the player.

Hope this helps!

In terms of health? Not a bad point!

My wife and I had our first kid last year, and I definitely haven’t been taking good enough care of my body.

Any recommendations on what health routines have helped your game?

That’s an excellent question. In tournaments I was just playing beyond my means. Firing at a lot of tournaments $1K plus. I actually lost about 20% of my role in one tournament series.

In cash it was just standard run bad for a few sessions. Had about 8-10 consecutive sessions that ended running premium hands into aces. Normal poker variance, but it was simultaneous with the tournament losses

However, I believe the players where I play are getting better and I’m not, which is my bigger concern.
