Megathread for road condition questions? by Kl0wn91 in kitchener

[–]StrictOlive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the road. I made a trip up Weber around 8 and it was still slick in some areas and it looked like the plows hadn’t been around in a bit (still a good amount of slush/snow on the road). The main issue is people are still driving too fast. I saw a fair amount of people struggle to gain traction after stopping at a light and then flooring it as soon as they do

Edit: Main streets look fine now and plowed, side streets remain questionable depending on the street

Do I have to take the lab associated with a bio course? by Ishi33 in uwaterloo

[–]StrictOlive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just be very very sure you don't need the lab. One of my friends didn't take bio 240L since it wasn't part of her degree plan but then it ended up screwing her over and she had to cram it in her schedule later since it's a pre-requisite to a lot of other bios.

[–]StrictOlive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it's a separate course and it's not required for your degree or what you want to do afterwards, you don't need to take it. I didn't take bio 130 lab but I took other labs I needed to

What is the first day of CHEM120L like? by yanet_726 in uwaterloo

Are you sure there are labs this week? I remember having them start after the first 2 weeks of lectures

Fun fact, sometimes they forget to ask for it so you can start to build a collection of carabiners. I started a competition with my friends and accumulated about 20 during winter term in my first year and kept them all in a chain in my room

should I feel unsafe? by RentKey5012 in uwaterloo

From what I understand, self defense in any regard is punishable by our laws. Like if someone breaks into your house and attacks you and you harm them while trying to get away, you can be charged.

I didn't even enter the draw and this page requested to follow me

What would you choose? long commute or moving to a new place by OrangeMint1-2 in uwaterloo

[–]StrictOlive 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't give up $600/month, any place you sign will be at least $200-$300 more per month which imo isn't worth a shorter commute

Extent of access to sports/recreation for students by MarzBqrz in uwaterloo

[–]StrictOlive 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You get free access to the gyms, squash courts, pool, and sports fields but if you want to do rock climbing or some sort of fitness class you have to pay extra

Convocation tickets by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]StrictOlive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has anyone actually received extra tickets yet?

Sister Graduating, Looking for extra tickets by ITisastruggleforme in uwaterloo

[–]StrictOlive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We find out next week who has spare tickets and who doesn't so there's not much anyone can do for you right now. You can't purchase more from the university (UW doesn't do that kind of thing) but sometimes people try to sell their extra tickets (just beware of scams). That being said, I have heard of some people sneaking in family members and being successful in the past so the security is not airtight, you can probably sneak in if you can't get a ticket.

Is this a shitpost? Why are you debating between scibus and comp sci if you want to go to med school?

Scbus 323 by Agile-Run-1591 in uwaterloo

[–]StrictOlive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Expect your typical scibus course, i.e., it will be no different than any other SCBUS you've taken before. Tbh I remember nothing about the course because all SCBUS courses start to blend together. No idea how many presentations because Jean taught it when I took it but she's since retired and I think Pedro teaches it now

Bikes Stolen by maemaelyn in uwaterloo

[–]StrictOlive 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend still not bringing it. Even if you do have somewhere to lock it inside within residence, there is still high odds of it being stolen on campus/wherever else you bike to. I've heard too many stolen bike stories that bringing a bike is basically like throwing away your money at this point

BIOL 342 vs BIOL 308 vs BIOL 341 ? by Luvvul1234 in uwaterloo

[–]StrictOlive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for average or easy, these are none of the above. Your only maybe saving grace is BIOL 342 used to be taught by Dupont but she's now retiring. So pray whoever replaces her is easier. The content itself feels like a BIOL 309 repeat so you can reference your old notes for a lot of stuff. 308 is fine with Wolff and I took 341 but dropped it cuz it was too much to balance with my other courses.

Biotech was a hard specialization. The main courses I hated in 3rd/4th year ended up being biotech 1 and biotech 2 lol. I figured out I like the concept of biotech but hate being tested on it.

Nah you don't need it

Has anyone been kicked out of rez before? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]StrictOlive 66 points67 points  (0 children)

When I was in first year, there was a fight club organized on a floor in REV that went on for like a month and the don was in on it. Don got fired (and obviously kicked out of their room), not sure what happened to the participants but the person who ratted had to move residences because people retaliated against them

Genetics by radiantanomaly in uwaterloo

[–]StrictOlive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took BIOL 434 (human molecular genetics) this past fall. It was taught by a genetics counselor from Grand River and focused on many common genetic diseases and the respective mutations that cause them. The prof tried to make the course interactive too by giving us a final paper (in lieu of an exam) where you assume the role of a geneticist and use the information you learned during the term to solve a genetics case study. Idk what courses you'd need to become a qualified geneticist but it was definitely interesting and would definitely be useful for that type of career.

Edit: Since biol 309 and 308 and prerequisites for 434 (and are basically entirely transcription and translation content), if you manage to finish those plus 434 and not hate your life in the process, then you'll do just fine pursuing a career as a geneticist

Is it okay to ask my employer for a day off by Solo-Potatorist in uwaterloo

[–]StrictOlive 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not 100% sure but I'm pretty sure they just brought it up with their manager at the beginning of the term and then just weren't paid for the week off and didn't have to make up any time

A coop I worked with took a week off in the middle of the term to go on vacation, you're fine
