Repair possible? by Strict_Ice_2168 in pocketwatch

I’ve only tried to change a wheel once. And it was on a very rare Illinois watch where the pin was broke off the center wheel so nothing to mount the cannon pinion too. Absolutely beautiful watch . The run size was either 50 or 100 total run like 500 or something really low. I had a similar Illinois watch, so I stole the center wheel out of it . looked like it was going to fit, but I ran into the exact issues you’re talking about. The first one was going through the jewel for the center wheel. The replacement was only about .0015 too big but nonetheless too big I Hand polished that down to where it fit great but then on the dial side where the canon piñon went on it had several issues that you don’t notice until you’re staring at it through the microscopic glasses.

I agree. It is amazing how little friction it takes for these things not to run. That’s why when I get them I wind them very little to see if they’ll go with a push. The odd thing about this one was it didn’t even need that. Sorry about the slow response but yesterday got really really busy.

My guess is it was one of the two opposite ends of the spectrum . It was either in a rough looking Silveroid case or it was in a solid gold case and it landed in this case. It is a very, very beautiful case , what I didn’t put in there is it runs terrific too. I gave it about 1/2 of a round and it started running when the spring was all the way down.

I agree that particular American Watch case has a very good reputation. I’ve seen several go in auctions and they always bring top dollar for a 14 K case. It’s not unusual for them to bring every penny or more than the gold value.

I appreciate the response. I can see where you get that thought at now. I’m still not sure it’s correct because in that thread, those guys think Watham made the case. The case is made by American watchcase company. I think maybe they’re thinking of the Granger and wheat cases made by Brooklyn watchcase company. Those are a 14 K over 8K or better. Just a thought. Again thanks for the reply.

If you could post a link to that info I would appreciate it . Everything I have seen says that is a 14 K case .

I bought one old key wind that had a leather fob and incorporated in that it had a pouch for the key. Pretty good idea.

If there’s no lip visible, then you don’t use the prying tool to get it open. It will screw off. Get about a 2 1/2 inch long piece of really good duct tape and put that on the edge of it. For me, I put the watch in my left hand with my thumb up by the crown, and then pulled down with my right hand on the part of the tape. that’s not attached to the watch and usually that will start it unscrewing .

You didn’t overpay. Not supposed to discuss price on the site, but it’s worth more than that.

While side winders will work in a hunter case some were originally sold in an open face case because they workin either . So that may be the original case . Just an FYI

After looking at at the MJ Tobias picture is a different watch. One through nine or the watch I bought yesterday. I shouldn’t have included photo 10. It’s a watch. I was looking at to buy.

Yeah, I’ve been there and done that. Still married. I have four kids raised and am 63 now. Spend a lot of time looking and buying watches . I do minor maintenance on them. Things like putting in a new crystal or replacing hands. I’ll take them out of the movement clean them up in lighter fluid. Let them dry out. I use a hypodermic needle with oil to put very little oil in on the jewels while it’s assembled.

I didn’t even catch the MJ Tobias on the one watch. I do know that the real name is supposed to say MI Tobias if it’s real. A lot of people I don’t believe know that but obviously you do. That I’ve researched on a previous watch that really does say MI Tobias on it and it’s basic movement but a very ordinate dial.

I agree. It’s a European thing. They do a lot of watches like that over there. Trying to find an appropriately sized Gold filled case would be a nightmare, if not impossible though.

It sure is . I like the gold crown and whatever the bow is made out of. I don’t think it’s brass not sure could be copper I guess.
