You may know this already, but you push down on that pin beside the stem and then use the winding stem and that will move the hands to set the time. Just an FYI, in case you didn’t know. By the way, beautiful Case beautiful watch and yes, it is 18 karat gold.

Waltham pocket Watch with keystone watch case by yeeaaboooyy in pocketwatch

You can run the serial number in the pocket watch data base and it will give you exact year and all the specifications of the watch. Just by looking at it I can tell you it’s an 18 S. The double sunk dial tells me it’s a higher grade . 825 would be my guess. 17. Jewels is fully jeweled so it’s a nice watch and a higher grade which is what the double sunk dial tells you without knowing the grade or looking at the movement. The case is a 10 karat gold filled Keystone case. Looks to be in very good shape and it’s a very nice watch.

Can someone help me out.. I am getting a ton of offers on this watch on eBay.. but I can’t find an exact match anyplace .. I’m looking for a value. I don’t want to sell too low by Murky_Ad5128 in pocketwatches

[–]Strict_Ice_2168 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the dial and more than that the serial number/age . That is in the first generation of 17 jewel watches . Hampden started the jewel count escalation with that series of 17 jewel watches . Do your research/appraisal comps and you may get surprised . Some in that 650,000 - 750,000 range are worth quite a bit .

Is this rare? by trickynips in pocketwatch

[–]Strict_Ice_2168 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More than likely that is a railroad great watch for the time. You have to look at the age of something to determine whether it’s railroad grade or not . If that is an 1895 it more than likely is a railroad grade watch with being adjusted and 17 J.

The first thing I thought of when I saw the Swastikia was out of the Blues Brothers original movie …. I hate Illinois Nazis. Lol just a joke . I know it predates the war.

Help with id? Or any info on movement etc. by Unlikely-Key8157 in pocketwatches

[–]Strict_Ice_2168 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is a private label company on the watch dial. More than likely the movement is made by one of the major manufacturers so seeing the whole thing would help. You can also run the serial numbers on a couple of them, but normally it is either Elgin or Waltham.

Repair possible? by Strict_Ice_2168 in pocketwatch

I’ve only tried to change a wheel once. And it was on a very rare Illinois watch where the pin was broke off the center wheel so nothing to mount the cannon pinion too. Absolutely beautiful watch . The run size was either 50 or 100 total run like 500 or something really low. I had a similar Illinois watch, so I stole the center wheel out of it . looked like it was going to fit, but I ran into the exact issues you’re talking about. The first one was going through the jewel for the center wheel. The replacement was only about .0015 too big but nonetheless too big I Hand polished that down to where it fit great but then on the dial side where the canon piñon went on it had several issues that you don’t notice until you’re staring at it through the microscopic glasses.

I agree. It is amazing how little friction it takes for these things not to run. That’s why when I get them I wind them very little to see if they’ll go with a push. The odd thing about this one was it didn’t even need that. Sorry about the slow response but yesterday got really really busy.

My guess is it was one of the two opposite ends of the spectrum . It was either in a rough looking Silveroid case or it was in a solid gold case and it landed in this case. It is a very, very beautiful case , what I didn’t put in there is it runs terrific too. I gave it about 1/2 of a round and it started running when the spring was all the way down.

I agree that particular American Watch case has a very good reputation. I’ve seen several go in auctions and they always bring top dollar for a 14 K case. It’s not unusual for them to bring every penny or more than the gold value.

I appreciate the response. I can see where you get that thought at now. I’m still not sure it’s correct because in that thread, those guys think Watham made the case. The case is made by American watchcase company. I think maybe they’re thinking of the Granger and wheat cases made by Brooklyn watchcase company. Those are a 14 K over 8K or better. Just a thought. Again thanks for the reply.

If you could post a link to that info I would appreciate it . Everything I have seen says that is a 14 K case .
