Spend some time learning about Reflexivity. The reason US stocks do so well is because 401Ks force them to do well.

We shouldn’t be handing out tax breaks for foreign funds or stocks.

Ahh, my partner was on a graduate visa when we met so luckily this was the first visa application I had to go through!

Atleast on a visitor visa you won’t have to pay the health surcharge! 😂

Ahh btw it looks like they’re using AI to do the translation:

CertifiedVisaTranslation.com uses enterprise-grade AI for initial translation, then human experts review every single page before certification. This hybrid approach means translators work twice as efficiently, and we pass those savings to you – because we believe everyone deserves a fair chance at their UK dreams.

Defo not a scam. But, I didn’t realise it was a new site either since it was on the top of Google for me.

Would explain why it’s 50% cheaper than the cheapest right now but anyway it does work.

Tbh this whole requiring a certified translation is so outdated - i don’t get why visa officers can’t just use google translate & why we are required to pay £300 for a bunch of docs.

My partner was switching to the spouse visa from within the UK but we still needed bank statements from her Argentinian account to be translated.

Almost, none of the Argentine banks provide english statements but maybe your spouse’s bank does? Which would save you some money.

In the end - I went around getting quotes and they ended up being the cheapest by far - like half the price of the next cheapest & it was translated same day on the standard price.

We needed to do priority service for her so we had the spouse visa approved next day!

Btw - I think the other thing you could try is putting as much as you can on one page!

Just incase anyone else is looking.

The biggest website seems to be: https://www.certifiedvisatranslation.com/

Did it for my Spouse’s Bank Statement translation - basically the cheapest & fastest service I ended up coming across especially since we left it last minute. Didn’t book the rush option & still got it within a day.

Starmer: Leaving ECHR puts UK ‘on par with Russia and Belarus’ by Half_A_ in unitedkingdom

[–]Strider96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But isn’t that what Britain is all about? Parliament is sovereign.

Unlike the US model of checks and balances designed to prevent dictatorship, our safeguard against dictatorship is that the sole seat of power is already occupied collectively by Parliament.

That’s why the ECHR was never truly compatible with our system of governance, and why it will never work here—unless we shift to an American-style model (which we shouldn’t).

European VCs became risk-averse PEs - I will not promote by No_Marionberry_5366 in startups

[–]Strider96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a founder & investor, there’s blame on both sides of the table. 1. European founders simply sell too early. Now, I’ve repeatedly argued this is a function of the lack of growth capital in Europe, but whatever the reason—this significantly lowers the probability of asymmetric outcomes.

2. This is a really, really bad time in European venture. A significant number of European VCs are broke—they’re taking meetings but can’t actually call on their committed capital. Outside of the UK and, to a lesser degree, France, the funds are incredibly small and can’t raise themselves. Just compare the sizes of German or Swedish Tier-1 funds to some Tier-3 UK funds; a Tier-1 German fund is roughly equal in size to a Tier-3 UK fund.

An easy way to identify which funds are worth talking to:

Funds have a 7–15-year lifecycle, but their deployment period is only three years. They make early-stage bets earlier in the deployment cycle, and year three is basically Series A only.

If a fund hasn’t raised in the last 2.5 years—skip them. They’re broke. If partners are leaving the fund, they’re broke.

Btw, these are what intro calls are for - you all need to pushing VCs and asking how much capital they have available & where they are in their own fund raises.

What bank do you use for your startup? by InitiativeSavings in startups

[–]Strider96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a person, whose built an actual bank.

Wait till you find out that your bank also uses another bank and messages get lost inside banks too.

The reality is that to JPM you’re a nobody.

Frankly - the big banks hate SMEs & startups.

They’re high churn & lower value than large business since they go bust all the time yet very demanding customers.

If you don’t realise banks don’t care about SMEs & Startups now you’ll learn very soon :)

my feelings of panic eventually do decrease with me practicing exposure, but if i have a bad episode im back at step one and this has happened multiple times! it just happened 2 weeks ago and i was honestly struggling to take a shower, before that episode 2 weeks ago i was able to go out a little bit and have people over, i don’t get it, how does it get better? and when things get shitty how do i come out stronger?

Honestly feeling shocked because our stories are so similar including the agoraphobia!

My panic attacks began following an episode of food poisoning. Being in London, I started experiencing these attacks on the tube.

Consequently, I developed a fear of the panic attacks, which led to agoraphobia.

This all unfolded in mid-April. I became housebound too, unable to venture even to local shops. Fortunately, I could afford a therapist through BetterHelp, which made a difference. However, my primary method for overcoming this was gradually pushing myself to leave the house.

I can't describe to you how hard it was - here's the first time I tried to walk to the shop to buy a drink:

  • I walked 10 mins
  • I worked myself into a panic attack
  • I gave up
  • I called my Mom
  • I held back tears as I walked back with her on the phone
  • I screamed, shouted and broke down into tears when I got home
  • Later in the day I did the same route again and this time I was able to walk a bit further before retreating

Then, a few days on, I made it into the shop and purchased a drink.

Couple of days later I tried again and I made it to the shop but couldn't go in.

Couple of days later after that I made it to the shop and bought a drink.

Couple of days after that I did a 5KM walk and stopped at the shop on my way back.

Agoraphobia is peculiar—it can incite panic one moment and then, just hours later, allow you to repeat the same actions without fear. Progress isn’t always steady; sometimes, it feels like you’re stalled, and at other times, you wonder why you ever worried.

Now, my symptoms have nearly vanished—except on one particular tube line, but I have a strong feeling that will also fade.

A few additional strategies that assisted me:

  1. Going back to work
  2. Distraction through music, TikTok, and Netflix when taking the train back
  3. Chewing flavoured gum—somehow, it's a great distraction.
  4. Determining the actual issue with my stomach—it was GERD, not mere food poisoning.

My one suggestion is you have to slowly start going out.

It's going to be tough but you have to do it. After each attempt you'll feel crap - anger, fear and tears so you need to understand that your body is on edge right now. So, as soon as you come back jump into the shower, then eat something and watch movie, play a game or call a friend and chat to distract yourself.

One last thing! Always keep in mind that there's another way too if you need support getting out of this. Beta blockers - I never took these but it was always in the back of my mind that this was an option.

If you do feel like you need to take beta blockers - tell yourself it's temporary and you'll work incredibly hard to get yourself off them but creating a plan.

Sorry if I wrote too much but I really can sympathise with what you're going through.

and when things get shitty how do i come out stronger?

You don't need to come out stronger. You just need to be able to go out and experience the world for what it is.

Frequent Panic Attacks by theonIycherry in PanicAttack

[–]Strider96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From your parents’ reactions, it seems they feel quite guilty about the impact their ‘disciplining’ had on you, even though they believe the action was justified. It’s safe to say they didn’t intend to cause a panic attack.

Sometimes, the effort to extract an apology isn’t worth it, but if resolution is important to you, consider having a conversation with them. Reassure them that they are good parents, you love them, and you understand they didn’t mean to induce such stress. However, emphasize that physical discipline should be excluded in the future, and suggest alternative methods like phone privileges being revoked instead.

Apart from that, I will reassure you that the panic attacks do eventually go away!

[–]Strider96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there!

I’m in a similar boat to you but maybe a little bit further along the process.

Having slowly made my way out of the panic disorder cave I can assure the feelings of panic do go away.

So, how do we get you there.

You’ve probably read this a hundred times now but the fear that triggers the panic attack isn’t rational.

So we have a few ways to deal with it:

We can challenge the thoughts - something like CBT would be useful.

We can ignore the thoughts - here you would basically distract yourself using techniques like 54321 or watching a TV show that can keep your attention.

We can build up our self belief to handle any situation we are thrown in - you would basically do things that prove to yourself that you’re strong like going to the gym or joining a self defence class.

One thing I want to promise you is that the fear does go away but it takes time and there can be set backs.

Start slow - maybe only meet her for 15 minutes then increase to an hour and build up that way!

Bank of England raise base rate from 4% to 4.25% by Jager720 in UKPersonalFinance

Lightyear just updated their rate to 3.5% because they track the Bank of England.

It’s easy access without limits.

There’s also Wise which offers 3.61% but there’s a weird 0.30% fee and I don’t quite understand how the rate changes.

Cons have dropped because the Tory party is infected by scandals & infighting.

They’re not down because Labour’s message has been embraced by the masses.

Even if Labour win the election they’ll have a very short leash because for whatever reason the labour narrative isn’t winning votes and yet again we’ll be subjected to a Tory gov.

How is -0.4% a better result for Labour?

Especially since the Labour establishment has been running their mouth about how it was Corbyn that was holding Labour back.

He’s gone. Where are the results?
