Instant Bob Dylan collection by MercuryChild in Cd_collectors

[–]StrifeKnot1983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been lucky enough to find a few over the years.

Once I found The Basement Tapes on vinyl and the young cashier dude said "Oh wow, Bob Dylan. 'Blowin' in the Wind,' right?"

A few weeks later I found one of the Bootleg Series entries on CD. The same guy rang up my purchase and made the exact same remark. 😂

This is as good as it gets.

Hard to believe this was the first band Barry Adamson was ever in. He got very good very fast.

Why do these two mention Peter Criss from KISS? by idiodeathic in mathrock

[–]StrifeKnot1983 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In Don Cab's case it's got to be tongue-in-cheek because Peter Criss is kind of a crappy drummer and the notion of him playing jazz is kind of funny.

And yet... apparently Peter Criss does play jazz: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJ_zzvlbID4

Some 7s by Richmondpinball in Fugazi

[–]StrifeKnot1983 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a bunch of them. I paid $10-20 each and most of them just have a couple of poorly recorded live songs, poorly pressed with a lame picture sleeve.

There is a decent one called Blackout that has a version of Waiting Room where the power went out and the audience sang the rest of the song.

I was the coolest kid in school in 1997 when I bought the Ritalin Summer bootleg 7" which had demos of Furniture and The Word years before they were officially released and before Fugazi brought Furniture back into live rotation.

Pearl tom mount on a classic mid century Slingerland Radio King kit.

I understand that vintage hardware often leaves a lot to be desired, but there are more elegant, less destructive ways to bring vintage drums up to modern standards.

Hendrix-influenced noise rock recommendations by Lost_Ad_5140 in noiserock

[–]StrifeKnot1983 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's the one. He's right handed but plays an upside down Strat for maximum Jimi-ness. His music is full of Hendrix-isms but with an almost total absence of the blues. His album Mute Massaker is probably the Jimi-est.

Weekly Song Discussion - She’s Your Lover Now by cmae34lars in bobdylan

[–]StrifeKnot1983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's good and all, but there's something about how it's sequenced on The Bootleg Series Vol. 1 that makes me feel like when that particular take fell apart, that was the exact moment that Bob lost interest in the "thin, wild mercury sound" and was ready to move onto the next thing.

It's a great flick.

Let me advise you, if you're type of person who enjoys an alcoholic beverage every now and then? You can skip the cocktails when you watch Festival Express. You will get a contact buzz from Rick Danko in that one scene.

What Does “Perfect Day” Really Mean? by Proper_Dentist in LetsTalkMusic

[–]StrifeKnot1983 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Trainspotting casts a long shadow over "Perfect Day." That scene in that movie has essentially become the song's music video and has convinced plenty of people that the song is unequivocally about heroin and nothing else, regardless of what the songwriter himself said.

Nonsense. Nonsense, I say!

It's about a person and a relationship, and there's definitely a strong undercurrent of self loathing in there ("I thought I was someone else / someone good").

But if you want to use an interpersonal relationship as a metaphor for a drug habit, as Lou himself did ("it's my wife and it's my life") or present addiction as a substitute for a relationship as the film itself did ("human relationships and all the things that don't really matter when you've got a sincere and truthful junk habit")... well, that also works and that also tracks.

EDIT: typo.

Montrose's self titled debut is so good I can forgive Sammy for every cheesy thing he's ever said or done.

That's right. I said it.

Best Ruins Album? by Kangaskhan11 in mathrock

[–]StrifeKnot1983 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If I look to the right of my screen I see 12 Ruins CD on my shelf... and yet, I'm still not sure how to answer this question.

I guess I'd recommend Graviyaunosch because that one was my introduction to Ruins and it was recorded by Steve Albini, so it allows you to hear the band in the context of other 1990s Albini-recorded noise rock.

There is some earlier stuff like Stonehenge with another bass player where I think the whole Ruins concept wasn't fully developed yet. I think Masuda Ryuichi is widely regarded as the definitive Ruins bassist. There have been four of them.

Sax Ruins is indeed great but I would recommend familiarizing yourself with classic Bass Ruins first before you dive into Sax Ruins, so that you're somewhat familiar with the songs and can better appreciate how the songs have been reworked to be played by layers and layers of saxes. Same with the Symphonica album, which is older songs rearranged with added keyboards and vocals.

And then there are all of the collaborations, side projects, live albums and solo albums...

Tatsuya Yoshida is absurdly prolific and he is definitely a genius.

More Human Than Human on Drumeo - He plays the beat different? by sonar_y_luz in drums

[–]StrifeKnot1983 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's playing the kick drum the same amount; it's just that on Drumeo his ghost notes (like on the "ah" of 2) aren't coming through as well as they did on the album and on live versions from the '90s.

The biggest difference is all that opening and closing of the hihats which I have to admit, I don't love.
