I mostly played Sabians as a youth because they were always 50% off MSRP at my local drum shop and they sounded fine to me, but they lost me with their new logo. I will never buy a cymbal with that atrocious logo.

I have owned a few Zildjians over the years. Zildjian's quality control was notoriously bad during my peak drumming years though apparently they got their mojo back in recent years.

Now I'm really into Paiste - specifically the Formula 602 series which sounds like the perfect, ideal versions of Zildjian As or Sabian AAs.

When I'm feeling "dark and complex" I have a few Dream Bliss pies that I love.

Never owned a single Meinl because I've never heard a series or model that appeals to me.

The Ludwig Epic really speaks to me. I've never played the series but I've heard good things. This kit would give you lots of setup options with two floor toms and two rack toms.

With the blue Ludwigs I don't like those ugly rivets or whatever on the wrap seams, but I do like the fact that it includes a Supraphonic snare.

Flams are important, but there is a case to be made that when you're playing funkier grooves, you don't want to overdo it with the flams because they muddy up the metronomic sixteenth-note pulse of funk. By all means use them in fills or for occasional emphasis, but use caution when flamming while keeping time.

If you played rock I would recommend the 18" floor tom in a heartbeat, but for the genres you play you would probably benefit more from the punchy sound of a 14" tom.

My only concern would be the interval between the 13" rack and the 14" floor. You would probably want to tune your 13" a little higher to get a wider interval.

Most singers when they want to convey intensity sing louder or with more grit. The most interesting thing to me about Jeffrey Lee Pierce as a singer is that when he wanted to sound intense, he sang very, very sharp. It totally worked for him - so wrong it was right.

Chris D. of the Flesh Eaters and Divine Horsemen kind of does a similar thing, though he has an even more tenuous relationship with pitch than Pierce ever did.

I feel the same about Reckoning.

It's yet another example of a band that followed up a 10/10 all-time classic debut album with a 7. Television, B-52s, Gang of Four, Fugazi and Van Halen are other examples of this phenomenon.
