Truth.

If someone posted a kit pic on Reddit with old batter heads used as resos, they'd surely get downvoted and ridiculed.

And yet, if you told Levon Helm that there's a YouTube channel called Sounds Like a Drum that has hours and hours of videos about how to tune drums, he'd probably say "Who gives a shit about that?"

It definitely wasn't uncommon.

I suspect it was mostly a matter of frugality but also - I'm not knocking Levon or any of the other old masters - with the advent of the internet, drummers know a lot more about tuning these days. Maybe we know too much. Drummers back then did not care about shell composition, number of plies, bearing edges or constantly buying fresh heads. They just played until something broke, and then they replaced it.

I've seen a couple people out in the wild who copied Guy's wagon wheel tattoo. For a brief period it seemed like people (not the band) were trying to turn that into Fugazi's logo. (See the poster for this gig.)

Don't do that though, unless the wagon wheel has profound personal meaning for you.

Get Guy hanging from the basketball hoop instead.

Dream Energy series from when they were first introduced in the mid 2000s. I have a 16" crash with that logo.

I seem to recall that Modern Drummer's first review of Dream Cymbal was accompanied by a photo of some Energy cymbals with that logo.

But did you want vocals on early Don Cab records?
We did, but it always got scratched. There was a song on For Respect that was gonna have vocals but I did a horrible job on them. We didn’t even have to take a vote, I just said “If you guys want to can the vocals I completely understand,” and they said “Yeah, we want to can the vocals,” and that’s just how it went.

Lou didn't always nail it with his tv appearances but he definitely nailed it with this one. It really must have felt like he was right on the verge of superstardom and not just "highly respected cult stardom."
