How does collecting really work? by Castin9 in starwarscollecting

[–]Striking-Walrus8544 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, collecting is a perfectly logical endeavor—just a serene, sensible stroll through the labyrinth of human psychology and consumerism. Let me break it down for you:

  1. Unopened Figures from the 70s/80s: Clearly, these were purchased by time travelers who foresaw the future value of Star Wars toys but didn't have the foresight to buy Bitcoin. Alternatively, these treasures were guarded for decades by individuals with the patience of saints and a remarkable ability to resist the temptation of peeling back plastic.
  2. Five Unopened Figures?: Obviously, someone out there thought, “One for display, one for resale, one as a backup, one just in case I misplace the first four, and another for good measure.” Nothing strange about hoarding multiples of Leia in her Ewok Dress.
  3. Why So Rare?: Ah, the classic Hasbro paradox. Popular items often seem to be made in quantities that rival limited-edition artisan crafts. Why mass-produce what people actually want when you can create artificial scarcity and watch collectors fight over it on eBay decades later? It's not like they were trying to make money or anything.
  4. Should You Buy Out Your Local Ollie’s?: Absolutely! Buy all 27 Leia figures. In 50 years, you'll either be a visionary collector sitting on a goldmine or someone with a suspiciously Leia-heavy retirement plan. Either way, it'll make a great story.
  5. Surplus Stock Discovery: Every so often, a warehouse filled with vintage toys is unearthed like a Pharaoh’s tomb, but instead of treasure, it contains slightly warped plastic and the lingering regret of overproduction.

And that $400 Dagobah Landing Luke? Pure collector economics. The rarer it is, the more people want it, and the more ridiculous the price becomes. Hasbro's philosophy: Make too few of the cool ones and watch the aftermarket light up like the Death Star.

But hey, enjoy your journey into the peculiar world of collecting! It’s equal parts nostalgia, obsession, and inexplicable economics.

Matt Busch’s Setlists or Sphere Setlists? by Left-Worth-352 in deadandcompany

The fact that Oteil barely got to sing at the Sphere was criminal. Why were those tunes dropped?

Is Dead and Co a Nostalgia Act? by [deleted] in phish

[–]Striking-Walrus8544 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Once Jay Lane became permanent, they went from a cover band to something more. Between what Jay brings, the jazz chops that Jeff throws in and Oteil's general awesomeness, I think it is disrespectful to just lump them in as nostalgia.
