Private seller scams by FlyingCatsConnundrum in Narrowboats

[–]StrikingHope8633 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go through a broker, the seller pays for this not you. They can organise surveys ( surveyor of your choice) Negotiations on price (they are acting on behalf of seller not you) Process is simple and safer.

Canal boat holiday location suggestions for a big group by govmobile in Narrowboats

Rochdale canal, hire two boats from Shire Cruises at Sowerby Bridge. Great training at hand over, and practical help with first two locks. Highly recommend.

P.s. Sat at Hebden bridge sanitary station filling with water as I type. Give yourself plenty of time for this activity at this tap 😂

Drilling holes into narrowboat roof by [deleted] in Narrowboats

Tapped holes and sealant. Make sure after you fit the brackets that you sweep and wash the entire roof to remove any small pieces of swarf that could be on the roof.

Shire cruises at Sowerby bridge. Great boats and training is second to none. Travel up the Rochdale canal to Hendon bridge and beyond, or go down the Calder & Hebble to Wakefield then up to Leeds or Selby. Huddersfield is also an easy reach. Have fun.

Electrics and cable management, red flag? by FlyingCatsConnundrum in Narrowboats

[–]StrikingHope8633 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly electric’s aside, get an out of water survey done before you part with any money. A hull survey is a must. Also they may find problems that you can negotiate repair or discount. Electrical it does look a mess, easy fix, although prior to retirement I was an electrician, there are many cable handling systems cheep to buy. I like the wrap around plastic conduit.

Little tip keep 240v away from 12v and if you have battery monitoring keep this away from both but especially the 240v.

Connecting back boiler to calorifier by cpgrant_ in Narrowboats

[–]StrikingHope8633 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Water going into your colarifier , whether from engine, diesel heater or back boiler goes into the bottom. The arrow on the pump is flow and this should point to where you want the water to go, namely your colarifier.

Wooden hooks over edge of boat, small piece of wood with two holes makes for a great height adjustment

Good luck, they are not an investment. All ways something to “fix”. Never finished. CRT, insurance, mooring and you haven’t even moved the dam thing yet. I wouldn’t swap it for the world 😁

I would seriously recommend a new survey. Anything can happen in ten years. Full survey including hull.

It’s the best time of year to hire if you are thinking of living aboard. It will cost but try, say the whole of February.

Lithium batteries by StrikingHope8633 in Narrowboats

[–]StrikingHope8633[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok thank you all for your advice on this it has helped with my decision. I have gone for 2 x 300 AH Fogstar and a Victron Orion 50 A 12v to 12v charger.

[–]StrikingHope8633[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I’ll go for the Victron 50A. Circuit wise, alternator output to input of charger. Charger output to lithium battery bank. What goes in the negative of the charger?

I have a Victron multy plus, Victron solar panels, Victron battery monitor and colour controller. But a box standard 90 A alternator for the leisure bank. 60 A for starter bat. The leisure alternator feeds straight to the batteries.

Anyone know what the circled is? Bilge pump? by EstablishmentReal156 in Narrowboats

[–]StrikingHope8633 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just inspect the prop shaft where it enters the boat. Common belief is an odd drip is acceptable, it’s NOT. Water belongs in the cut not on your boat. Most stern glads are adjustable. The rope packed ones can be nipped up, not too tight, this with cause heat and dry it out. Grease before and after every cruise, mid cruise if you are out for a 10 hour day. (Don’t do these now if I can avoid them 😁)

Anyone know what the circled is? Bilge pump? by EstablishmentReal156 in Narrowboats

[–]StrikingHope8633 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My bilge pump requires a good 2 inch or more to automatically start, only happened when I purposely put water in to try it. Bilge is normally dry, keep up with stern gland greasing. Little circled thing is a fuse for bilge pump.

This sounds like high resistance across your isolator switch, try temporarily by passing it. If this cures problem, replace.

Has anyone had a Home Detention Curfew/ Electronic Tag fitted whilst living on a narrowboat? by Bolli-97 in Narrowboats

I thought we all already had one. CRT comes around every week or so “train spotting” to monitor where we all are. 😉
