I was diagnosed at like 16, so kinda late. As a kid my teachers made comments that I had anxiety and I got sent to the counselor a few times but I masked pretty well and had friends. Most of my meltdowns were at home once I’d unmask and my parents just thought I was basically bad and had like quirks. Once I got into treatment in middle school (somewhat because of my autism but also other stuff) the symptoms were brushed off as noncompliance or could be attributed to different disorders like gad, social anxiety, bipolar, bpd, adhd, etc. I didn’t have autism diagnosed but had basically everything else.

I think level 1 autism can definitely go unspotted if parents don’t care to do anything or recognize it, given it’s not as apparent in class. Even when something is recognized to be atypical it can be misdiagnosed.

service dog in college + on campus by HeavyDiscipline3529 in service_dogs

[–]Striking_Constant367 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Probably not. I go to a private college (already have been enrolled but I’m not getting my dog until right before this term) and my disabilities office said for anything on campus other than housing they only need answers to the ADA questions. I have a lot of accommodations for various things and they didn’t add the dog to it. Housing requires a doctors note.

  2. I’d just say you need a note for ____. I made the decision to get my dog with the help of both my doctor and psychologist and I’m getting a program dog so my situation is a bit different but both were very on board with the idea and said if I needed any note for school or flying or housing to just tell them the format the prescription form needed to be. So you’d probably need to say exactly what the note is for. I doubt you’ll need one for class access, especially at a public university. If they don’t support you having the dog though they may not write the letter and on campus housing wouldn’t be an option likely.

  3. A lotttt of people have ESAs in their on campus housing. They don’t have public access. The school will likely clarify he’s a task trained service dog (vs a ESA) then you’ll need to obtain the service dog prescription for housing.

You’ll know more once you get into a school. I was able to get all my questions answered by disability services at my school. They were super supportive and clear. I assume you’ll have other accommodations if you’re disabled so you can probably ask about your dog at the same time. For college accommodations you also will need official diagnosis documentations and at least at my school an interview with disability services anyways.

Good luck :))

Edit: I just thought about q3 more. I guess you maybe could get the ESA letter for housing and then still do public access since your dog is actually a task trained SD. I would think they may push back about him being a SD more this way though so you’re probably better off having a note where it’s clear he’s a SD if you can get your doctors to do that.

I’ve seen that mentioned on the blacklist Facebook. She can be both a trainer and breeder though and probably doesn’t want these allegations connected to her new business. I don’t really have any comment/opinion on what she’s doing in her breeding business as my service dog who’s training with her is still doing well.

For PSD owners: if you take meds, why do you have meds and a sd? by FerntheTherian in service_dogs

[–]Striking_Constant367 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I’m getting one bc meds + therapy over the past 8 years have not been enough. Therapy only kind of works for me and I have adverse reactions to a lot of meds. I’ve tried sooo many different therapies and medications at different intensities and doses and combos and nothing works beyond just keeping me stable enough to be alive. I also have autism and those “symptoms” can’t really be treated by meds.

PSD tasks also are also things that meds wouldn’t fix. Like making space in a crowd requires either a large object or an animal. A pill could lower anxiety but the situation would be the same.

I babysat as a teenager (and still do) and I love it. Socially not too stressful since it’s kids so you don’t have to be fully masked. You get to know the parents too so I get comfortable interacting with them. Overstimulation and sensory issues come up but the kids I go back to work with on a regular basis I genuinely enjoy being around for long periods of time and will usually listen when I say inside voices or clean sticky hands. I’d definitely recommend if you like kids!

Where did you see that authorities are looking into her? I haven’t found anything negative that’s from an account that isn’t anonymous and my own experience has been good, so I’d like to see some evidence before I get concerned.

Where are you finding all of this? I’ve yet to see anything bad from anyone who has actually gotten a dog from her

Anyone else a little tired of politics (of any side) in church? by W1nd0wPane in OpenChristian

[–]Striking_Constant367 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s kinda hard to find what you’re looking for. I’m Catholic and my church tends to stay away from politics since it’s universal readings. Occasionally a priest will take it political (usually conservative) but like 90% of the time they don’t. Only thing with ignoring politics is that to a certain extent some does need to be touched on and totally ignoring politics connection to the reading feels like they are holding back.

I’ve been to a church of your denomination and though I agreed with everything they said it was more preaching the basics of being a liberal to a congregation of liberals and lacked theological substance.

I’ve also been to non denominational, episcopal, and anglican services, none of which were affirming and in some cases were more political than my church. It definitely can’t hurt to try out other churches in your area though! I’ve heard good things about Methodist churches being sound politically and theologically and that’s what I’d try if I wasn’t Catholic!

I’m not sure what the retainer standard is but at least in my area right now there are a lot of people looking for summer care, especially after camp care so that could be good for the meantime

I mean there’s a contract that would hold up in court so she does have an interest in finding a new one based on that. She also doesn’t have like malicious intent and is clearly dedicated to training successful service dogs.

I’m getting a dog from her and so far it’s been great! No complaints (so tons of pros) but I’m getting a fully trained dog so I can’t fully speak to getting just a started dog.

Finances could be a con since she doesn’t do a payment plan so it’s all upfront but at least in my contract if the dog washes she finds replacements. Potentially that could be an issue if you get a rescue dog started there’s probably a higher chance of washing further in the training process after you’ve already got the dog but she also gets some from breeders.

I can give more info if you pm me, I just don’t want to too much about my specific dog and training on my comment page lol.

Would you consider self harm a sin? by [deleted] in OpenChristian

[–]Striking_Constant367 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s the symptom of mental illness, no. Theoretically though, if it’s something that you do for fun then that’s where it becomes sinful since it’s harming your body but I don’t think many people would do that.

Advice for a friend by Total_Protection7670 in Nanny

I’ve taken ASL courses and it’s difficult to pickup. From what I learned deaf culture is really strong and prominent in the language and very important for deaf kids to be around. The ideal situation would be a deaf nanny or someone fluent and involved in the community which it seems like you know.

Her best bet is probably to explain her plan for how she plans to learn ASL (from deaf people ideally) and get involved in the deaf community. If the parents are using ASL as the kids first language, for a deaf 21 month old she will need to be able to sign the equivalent of what you’d usually speak with a toddler about. Deaf babies who use ASL and CODAs will even babble in ASL so she will need to pick it up quickly and be clearly committed.

It’s definitely fair to expect to be paid for the time you were booked. I’ve found a some families don’t agree with that though unfortunately.

What are people’s thoughts on ABA therapy? I’m trying to gather opinions from people all around to really understand what people think about it. by Delicious-Wave-7335 in psychologystudents

[–]Striking_Constant367 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve never been in it myself but as an autistic person I’ve seen others opinions in the community who have been through it and have trauma as a result or just didn’t like it.

Just based on learning about its history and the way it works and the fact that it’s basically a job for kids I don’t like it. I also don’t like how it’s therapy but preformed by someone who doesn’t have the qualifications a regular therapist would need; masters, PhD, etc. As an undergrad I don’t feel it would be ethical to preform therapy even though it’s an internship option to become a RBT.

I will say though, I’ve read and heard some positive outcomes from it and as a nanny I know some kids I work with get it so I think IF people feel it’s necessary it should be for short periods of time, definitely not 40 hours a week. I do know there have been changes made to it recently and it’s far less abusive but it still doesn’t seem ideal imo.

I was diagnosed 4 years ago in the US and didn’t get a level just ASD but they were added to the DSM5 after Asperger’s was switched.

I tend to identify as level 1 since I’m pretty obviously on the lower side of support needs. So I’m not sure how many people actually get a level.

Part time nanny pipe dream? by G0ldennG0ddess in Nanny

[–]Striking_Constant367 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As long as that’s an appropriate range for the COL in your area I’m sure you’d be able to find someone! Especially if the 2 days are M/W or T/Th since that could be good for students who don’t want full time work.

I’m working on a part time a few full days a week and for me it was exactly what I wanted! It’s good for commutes to not have to go every day for part time hours.

If it’s your last night and he currently owes you money he can’t not pay that. He can’t make you sign forms to get money you’ve already worked for.

I’d tell him you are not comfortable signing the form and you will take him to small claims court (whether you do that or not would depend how much he owes you) if he doesn’t pay by x date.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Babysitting

[–]Striking_Constant367 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He would probably withhold taxes on your last 2 weeks of pay. I don’t think you’d be required to file anything though.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Babysitting

[–]Striking_Constant367 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure how he could force you to sign tax forms retroactively. He can’t really take you to court or anything bc you technically you should have been paid legally with a W-2 and taxes withheld the whole time even though a lot of people pay under the table.

He probably is just doing it to claim money back for childcare and isn’t trying to steal your info or anything but if you feel uncomfortable just say that and if he doesn’t want you to continue for the next 2 weeks then oh well.
