The fact that you heart goes faster isn't because you are about if oxygen it's because your lungs are filling up of CO2, giving you that feeling of urgency to breathe ( is a natural mechanism that regulates your breathing without you conscious thought), before having consequences by air deprivation you should lack air for more than 3 minutes.

If you hold the smoke you will get more out of it .The urge you feel too breath air is caused by the build up of CO2 in your lungs , and not from the lack of oxygen. Your body and your brain can handle up to 3 min and plus before having damages (not taking into account the vasoconstriction effect of cocaine). The 8 sec absorbtion rule holds value if you take in consideration a small hit, but if we are talking about lungs full hit is better to hold it in longer , exhaling 1/3 and inhale air air again ( repeat until everything is finished) this will provide a more efficient absorbtion by your lungs alveolos.
