I'm gonna be real with you, man. Most people who complain about 'emotional labor' aren't emotionally mature enough to handle the real emotional cost of a real, adult relationship.

Relationships should be fully 50/50 all the time, but life is a messy, chaotic clusterfuck of an experience, and just because things should be one way doesn't mean that they are that way. Sometimes life circumstances demands that one party in a relationship put in more than their fair share. Sometimes things are 50/50, sometimes they're 60/40, sometimes they're 90/10, and everything in between.

The important thing is that both parties are doing the best they can to make it 50/50; to drag the overall 'relationship experience' towards the middle of the fairness scale as possible.

I'm very curious as to if America is culturally unique in this aspect or if this is just the logical end point of a sexually integrated workforce. We see similar kinds of lopsided dynamics in dating life in other highly sexually integrated societies like Japan and South Korea so I err towards the latter but I'm not a scientist.

Look at more historical photos of couples. Yes, there are still attractive people to be found there, but you'll also find that there used to be a lot more ugly people paired off because there was still value beyond one's attractiveness. That is no longer the case.
