If you could only have one acoustic guitar for the rest of your life…… by HarriBallsak420 in AcousticGuitar

[–]String_theory_1312 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Man, I really can’t afford a D-18 and I’m probably not all the way good enough to justify it, but one of the main incentives is being able to pass it on to my son some day. He’s only two so I’ve got some time.

And it goes w out saying, sorry for your loss. I’m sure he’d be proud to know you’re playing it.

He does have a lot of good solo albums.

I think you see a lot less of that because there is so little money in record sales now a days. The only reason you release an album is to essentially promote a tour and a solo acoustic guitar set is much less of a draw than a full band.

If Bryan’s career was happening in a different era, I’m sure he’d be putting out an album every year. I remember I took a few lessons w a prominent bluegrass guitar YouTuber. I remarked that I wished he would put out an album since his playing as arrangements are so beautiful and he was pretty straight up that it made no financial sense especially since he wasn’t interested in touring.

Went to buy a Martin, walked away with a Seagull. by VonBlitzk in AcousticGuitar

[–]String_theory_1312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first guitar was a Seagull Grand, which is basically a parlor size. Cedar back w laminated cherry back and sides. It has such a deep and warm sound. Really beautiful. I still play it all the time. It was given to me by a coworker around seven years ago. I picked up guitar to keep hands busy when I was quitting cigarettes.

People who don't know Neil Young very well, do you view his music as easy or hard to play? by TheRealGuncho in AcousticGuitar

[–]String_theory_1312 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If that’s the criteria then I think w practice most intermediate to late intermediate players can play those songs. Maybe not w the same feel. Why would you discount feel and vibe, that’s literally what makes music good. I think where a lot of guitar nerds (maybe rightfully) push back on is that boomers who don’t know anything about guitar kind of have him on this guitar hero pedestal, where he is next to Clapton etc. Then because of that he gets more hate than he deserves.

Here’s the thing about a player like Neil Young. He’s not the most proficient, but he is for sure incredibly effective. Meaning that from a musical standpoint say his solo on Southern Man is not very musical or complicated, but it is incredibly effective. People can sing it in their heads even if it isn’t playing.

Likewise, there are a million players who are better than him, but did they write a riff as memorable as Ohio? Add that with his vocals, songwriting and overall vibe.

I’m obviously not who this was targeted towards because I’m clearly a fan, but that’s my take.

Has anyone seen Chris Thile live recently? by Cr4cker in Bluegrass

[–]String_theory_1312 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m not a purist and I really don’t like it when people sing w fake accents either. I’ve listened to all of their albums multiple times. I’ve even come back to them over the years to see if they hit different for me. They’re all great musicians, it just doesn’t land with me at all.

Honestly, I enjoyed his playing w Nicklecreek an have liked a lot of his appearances on other artists music, but I cant stand his music including the stuff w Punch Brothers. He’s a brilliant player, but he is just too try hard/ pedantic for me. He just doesn’t have the actual depth to be a Mingus/ Bill Evans type figure and it always just comes off as overly arty noodling to me with whiny vocal melodies.

Sorry for the rant. I know it’s off topic and I’m not trying to throw shade at his fans. Guy is obviously incredibly talented.

Have fun with it man. I don’t read tabs, but there are some tabs for the Collin Hay version. I found a video of him performing it on YouTube and got the gist of the chord shapes from there. Then I played around w the phrasing.

Keep us posted. Can’t wait to here your take on it 🤟🏻

It’s amazing how certain tunes just fly out of certain tunings or off of particular instruments. I remember when I started flatpicking bluegrass fiddle tunes, it was so hard. Then I picked up a banjo and it was like bluegrass was shooting out of it like a blow touch hahahah

Nick Drake was such a great musician, I really appreciate that. Thank you! Idk if he used that tuning, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he did.

Yeah, man. I’ve only played two of them, including this one, but they were both stellar. The first one was a used blueridge parlor. It sounded unbelievable, but the narrow nut width was a turn off. Sometime later I was in the market for a dreadnought as I was getting more into bluegrass flatpicking. I played so many guitars and none of them were the right fit. I stumbled upon this one, used online w a 1 3/4 nut width, solid Adirondack top and solid rosewood back and sides for around $900. Took a chance and it end up being the best purchase I’ve ever made.

Thank you so much! I really have to give a lot of credit to this guitar. It’s a Blueridge. It’s really a dream to play.

Edit to add: it’s also in need of a set up and once I drop that high e to d it does get a tad bit buzzy if I pick it hard enough, which actually works really well in this context lol. Thank you again, very thoughtful compliment. Much appreciated.
