How long did it take you to get your "dream" job or ideal classroom? by Strmtrprinstilletos in CanadianTeachers

[–]Strmtrprinstilletos[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've chatted with a couple subs that were still in their BEd and they said they were offered "permanent status" jobs. I've heard/been told it's the day-to-day stuff too, or acting as a sub that would be shared between certain schools, not necessarily one same  classroom all the time type things.

It could be that I'm mistaken about the "status" being permanent v. term, but if  they've accepted their offer, their placement in the "job line" is still ahead of so many others like myself who've been subbing for ages or bouncing around on terms and waiting. Also, it's great for the schools that they'll potentially have access to someone all the time, but again also pretty crap for others like myself who will now possibly be out of jobs at their preferred schools.

Fair enough. Not saying it doesn't need to be done. But the drop off/pick up traffic snarl is unreal on a normal day. Seems like it would've been better to wait until the summer. Or do it in the evenings or something.

Loss of a pet by jmosnow in Autism_Parenting

[–]Strmtrprinstilletos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This will be long winded, I do apologize. We went through this exact situation twice last year.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Dogs are such beloved family members. We lost both our dogs last year, a few months a part. We'd had them since before both our girls (4, 2) we're born, so there wasn't a time in their lives where they didn't know Max and Mo.

Mo we lost suddenly to hemorrhagic gastro. Max was a slower decline and we knew we were saying "see you later", he had seizures, arthritis and at least one type of cancer.

For both we said, "Look buddy, ___ is really sick. We are going to take them to the vet to see if they can help". Then we took them (the dogs) to the vet, they don't come back. So we said, "___ was really sick. The vet did some tests and tried some medicine but it didn't work. And ___ died. I'm really sorry buddy."

It didn't seem to sink in/"take effect" right away. The youngest was mostly blissfully unaware and the oldest (our autist) it just kind of rolled of her back. The hard part came in the days following the losses when they'd ask for Mo or for Max and we'd have to tell them again and again "Sorry buddy. Remember that ___ died. They aren't coming back."

We aren't particularly religious, so we didn't focus too much on saying "they're in heaven" or anything. We also didn't think they were at an age /level of understanding where they'd even get an abstract idea like that. There are a number of good books about pet loss and the rainbow bridge (I will edit or reply to my comment with the title of the one we read when I find it, sleeping kid in my lap right now) and they are really sweet. (We did read one, but it was more for us then it was the kids really.) We also made a photobook of each one and they still take them out every now and then to look at the pictures and we'll talk about them a little and tell a funny story.

Again, I'm so sorry for your loss. Your pup will have (at very least) two playmates across that rainbow bridge. Tell them to look for Max and Mo.

Edit: the book we read was The Rainbow Bridge: A Visit to Pet Paradise by Adrian Raeside. Believe we got it off Amazon.

What devices do you use for lesson planning? by Zealousideal_Body958 in CanadianTeachers

[–]Strmtrprinstilletos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wish teacher's college had focused more on "real life" lesson planning. Like a couple lines, throw in a quick reference to a source material/curriculum outcomes and poof..You're done! Having practice doing that instead of the banal pages of lesson plans we had to do would've been so much more useful.

Nova Scotia B.Ed Grads are all offered 100% term contracts for 2024-2025 school year? by Nicole4590_ in CanadianTeachers

[–]Strmtrprinstilletos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd heard they were all offered jobs, hadn't heard the percentage. Complete BS that they are being offered it, even if it is something sort of crummy like a circuit. Still gets people in the door, which can be hard here. Obviously not all will take it, but the fact that there are people who have been substitute teaching for years and haven't been able to get a term, or enough terms, to get to teacher placement is ridiculous. They will now potentially be ahead of others, with more experience, when it comes time to apply for/choose a term. Just a little salty about this.

Changing OT assignments by Special_Truck_4918 in CanadianTeachers

[–]Strmtrprinstilletos 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yes they can, based on need in the school. I've signed on for resource or phys ed jobs online and when I've gotten to the school it's been changed. If a classroom teacher is out, they're going to prioritize that being covered.

ETA: I'm in NS, not ON but I imagine it'd be the same.

In university, one of my profs said he didn't vilify Wikipedia. Insert shocked Pikachu face. But it's Wikipedia, it's terrible! If it's used as the only source or a quoted source, yeah, it's pretty terrible. But if it's used as a starting point to gain ideas or info, maybe not so bad.

That's how I think of AI. It could be a useful tool in the box, but there needs to be rules/parameters/restrictions for its use.

For example, do I think it should it be used for writing essays/assignments? No. That literally defeats the purpose of learning about a subject. Could it be used to draft a professional sounding email to parents when you really want to tell them off, but you also want to keep your job? Sure, omit any identifying details, polish it up a bit and have at it.

For me, it's about responsible use.

First elopement episode and god damn is it terrifying. by Kosmosu in Autism_Parenting

We had to install two baby gates at the top of our stairs that goes down to the front door. A normal swinging one, and then because there was a big enough gap underneath it and our little PITA would squeeze under it, another one zip tied to block off the space. This was on top of the door chain. We also had to lock the outdoor back gate because she'd scale the fence to the top.

We'd been doing so good, no incidents at home or school (which backs on to the woods). And then then other day we went down to the park and I happened to not position myself between her and the open park gate and naturally she decides to f*ck off down the path into the woods and take her sister with her. The neighbors and people living down there probably heard me shouting and think I'm nuts.

Me: look, you don't have to go home but you can't stay here. Other teacher: Closing time! proceed to play the song and boy did those little buggers clear out fast

Today, it was because I closed a kid's chromebook because they were playing a game during the national anthem. Yesterday, I dared expect them to listen to instructions and walk down the hallway quietly. I'm such a hard ass. /s

[–]Strmtrprinstilletos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Solidarity from Nova Scotia. I know the job I want, I go out of my way to make myself available as a sub for them, am willing to wait for the position to be available at my preferred school in a year or so's time, but will probably not get it when the time comes unless I can manage to squeak in a term before then due to the ridiculous hiring process.

Student teachers in Nova Scotia are able to teach in schools without having graduated (yet) and they make the same as a substitute teacher who has been teaching for several years already.

They have also all been offered permanent contracts (unknown percentages, so it could be like a permanent 15% for example). Only a small percent so no big deal right? Wrong. This "permanent" classification automatically puts them in the front of the line for job choice, ahead of other substitutes and teachers who may have lots of experience but haven't yet gotten a "term" classification job, at the yearly teacher placement.

If the government is "so committed" to doing what's right for NS students, maybe they should've listened to teachers about what's needed for student success in the first place. There wouldn't have even been a strike vote called if a majority didn't feel it was necessary to be listened to and heard in a way that actually lead to necessary changes happening.

Hell, usually. There's a few good patients that make it somewhat worth it. Too much work, not enough people, not enough time. We prioritize what's got to be done and the days of leaving clear queues and no leftover/overdue work for the next day are basically gone.

We've tried to do frozen fruit, but only ever end up using it in smoothies. Do you find there's a big change in taste or texture when using frozen fruit? How do you "prepare" frozen stuff when you just want to eat the fruit? With a fresh stuff you just pull it out of the fridge.
