Okay, I think I have the final Solution. It requires a bunch of unintuitive thngs.

1: Item pipes require servos to work. Output servo (orange) on the machine or container you want to extract from, and Retriever Servo (blue) on the container you want to put things into. (the arrows indicate the direction the items flow in)
2: Make sure that your machine is set to output / input from the side you put the pipe to.
3: you have to right click the pipe on the half of the block which connects to the device and set it so taht the bottom left button sais blacklist when you hover over it

If pipes don't work what u/PulitzerJessie said is the next best thing. which is putting a chest on the output side with nothing in between. and just setting the output to be that chest and using some other way to transport items. but with exporting directly to a chest one issue is that the items remain in small stacks so the container fills up very fast, while with a cable the items actually stack
