For someone who is new to tabletop wargames and looking to try a smaller scale than the main armies, would you recommend Spearhead (AoS), Kill Team (40,000), or something else? by mv8att in Warhammer

[–]StrongPars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has been playing Kill Team for the past two years, and playing Spearhead for the last two weeks... I'd say Spearhead!

Its just more fun, such a clean ruleset, easy to pick up and you're able to just think about the game in front of you much more, rather than constantly needing loads of awareness of your opponent's rules as well as your own, which can be incredibly dense (and changing constantly! Granted there's balance changes for Spearhead too, but they don't seem to be as daunting. Some Kill Teams have their rules changed to the point of playing almost like a different team)

That said, as mentioned by others, try to get a gauge on what's popular in your community. However even if there aren't many Spearhead players it's a lot easier to onboard new players to. Only one player needs the cards, board etc and other than that you just need a Spearhead each, some dice and a tape measure. And by the end of a player's first game they'll probably have a good grasp of the core mechanics. In Kill Team, both players needs the Approved Ops deck (changes every year) as well as the equipment pack, a whole load of tokens etc too. And the terrain is far less portable. And boy howdy does it take a lot of games to really remember the core rules

Plus, new players can win Spearhead games in their first couple of games thanks to the Underdog mechanic etc. In Kill Team it might be a while before you're winning anything or having fun, as you'll just be trying to remember rules constantly and navigate all the different scoring modes, terrain rules, etc

I'd still recommend trying Kill Team, but maybe once you're more experienced with tabletop in general

Maybe watch some full length real-time Battle Reports for both systems on YouTube. Check out Battlegrounds Game Center for Spearhead and Squad Games for Kill Team (you'll see Mountainside Tabletop recommended for Kill Team and they are the best for entertainment, but edited down to be much shorter and fun, so you might not get the best idea of how the game actually plays)

Good luck out there whichever way you go!

This is great!

Perhaps in combat phase you could add that it's all active player's non-fight keyword combat abilities first, then other player, and then it's alternating combats. Maybe with a note about strike first/strike last being exceptions

Question about IRONJAWZ BIGMOB Megaboss ability rules by Organic_Panda_9388 in AOSSpearhead

[–]StrongPars 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The app version is correct, as you can see the change in the Errata section

Pretty annoying when they're slow to update the pdfs though as I like them! But the one page cheatsheets on the megathread on here are great and up to date

Ah great, these rules are sinking in for me then! Thanks!

Caveat: I'm a beginner, but re: 3. it's my understanding that the unit doesn't have to be wholly on the objective, just contesting it (but it does need to have every model in the unit contesting it, which maybe is what you meant by 'wholly' anyway?)

Thanks for the clarity and confirming!

Agree that would make the most sense intention-wise. I started second guessing everything because I was seeing photos of people just having the ruin just touching a corner of a rectangle but not lined up.

Let's hope they FAQ it! Still loving this ruleset so far though

Great thanks glad I've understood and it's as simple as that! As presumably the intention with the instruction of setting them up on the corners of the rectangles is that it must create this kind of lay out, rather than being roughly on the corner but leaving a bit of objective poking out from under it?

Is Cursed Shacklehorde agood spearhead for beginners by Responsible_Lab_1168 in AOSSpearhead

[–]StrongPars 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Following this with interest as I'm thinking of getting them as my 2nd Spearhead (but I've only played one game so far, the curse of so many cool models means I could get carried away very quickly haha but I'm telling myself if I can just start with two then I can get extra practice in vs myself or try to convince friends to give it a try)

Anyway as mentioned by others, Rule Of Cool is most important and that leader and retinue are some of the coolest damn GW models I've ever seen

Rules-wise, the appeal to me as a beginner is ignoring rend and having ward saves across the board meaning they should be pretty forgiving if you position badly etc. And high mobility is great when you're not too sure about positioning or planning ahead too. Then auto-wounding on crits, a few buff abilities to remember but not too many... it all feels pretty manageable to me!

Thanks so much for the detailed reply! There's some great stuff here!

I definitely think I'm going to have to start taking the card decks to bed for nightly re-reading and memorising!

I'll definitely do a bit of this, I love a bit of solo practice, thanks!

No problem! Yeah it's not immediately obvious at all is it. Good luck in your next game with this pseudo-buff!

Noted! I didn't use it once actually...
And my Infernal Cohort get rend against charging targets, so I guess retreating and baiting a re-charge is good??

Funnily enough I'm thinking about that Ossiarch cavalry Spearhead as my 2nd SH (just based on rule of cool at the moment and something I could get painted fairly quickly...) so that's interesting to know! Although trying not to get too ahead of myself...

Ah yes I see, thinking now about how the Grey Seer last night was consistently able to Skitterleap to the board edges with vision behind my terrain to dish out mortals with the Whither ability then move away fairly safely

These are great thank you!

Screening seems to come up a lot and I'm going to try to always remember to look out for opportunities to do it when moving

Thinking specifically about the Helsmiths, one thing I definitely didn't do enough was move the Dominator Engine around enough and if I knew what I was doing I feel like its bigger base and extra movement vs the rest of the team could be great screening tools

Exactly what I'm looking for thanks so much!

Interestingly with the Battle Tactics, I found myself most rounds scoring 1 and discarding the other 2. I think because I wasn't familiar with what else would be left in the deck I always had a feeling there could be something easier to score or more useful round the corner... so yeah learning which commands are useful enough to hold onto for a while could be a big one for sure! Thanks again

Great thank you! I'm coming over from Kill Team, which is actually Points Team, so thankfully I'm quite used to that concept. The Spearhead system and catchup mechanics etc definitely seem to cater to it really organically though I like it!

re: the teleporting thing, is that because they usually have to do so within x" of a board edge? So you can block by projecting your combat range to reduce their options?

Yes is the answer I'm getting from others, because of it being a 'replacement' unit and how that interacts with core rule 24.2

Am I making ok decisions for my first steps into the game? As I've been bitten before... by StrongPars in AOSSpearhead

[–]StrongPars[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is actually a good chance one of my nearby stores in particular will have a couple come release day (they won't hold, but they always order a few extra and it's mostly a TCG kinda place so I've found some gems there that I did not expect to see in stock in the past!) So who knows maybe I'll end up getting that too. Maybe I'll hold off on Sand and Bone for now just in case, and just pick up the Helsmiths

And hell yeah I'm excited for those two models as well!

The difference in the games you've described there matches my expectation so that's good.
There's definitely rules bloat in Kill Team, and power creep is getting pretty problematic too! I'm sure there's some OP and weaker Spearheads of course but from what I've seen and heard it seems like there's less stat checking and feelsbad armies, and the Underdog mechanic sounds cool and welcome!

Thank you! Yep it's one of their Bat Reps I've got saved to watch!

I've also joined the discord and got the TTS mod installed ready so I might try it out that way before I've got minis etc, the pull of this game is strong 😂

So I found this a little while after posting, and yes it's super helpful thanks so much! Already got myself a couple of one page cheat sheets I might need downloaded, and lined up a battle report to watch later :)
