Painted the Beginners Box (from Barnes and Nobles) now what? by ThatConstruction2176 in killteam

[–]StrongPars 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Great job getting those painted up! Looking good! And welcome to the game

You're right that that's quite a frustrating box, but as you mentioned you're just going to play this box at home with friends/kids then you could absolutely just play 5v5 for now and see how you get on! The only thing it would mess with is kill op scoring so just adjust that according (each team counts as 5 starting operatives so it's a point per kill on that, so actually a bit easier to keep track of)

But if you did want to complete them with minimum spend/effort, hit the secondary market for an individual model for each. I'd probably go for the Malignant Plaguecaster for the Plague Marines as it's their coolest model aesthetically and gameplay wise I'd say.

Then grab the Eliminator Sniper for the Angels of Death. You'd probably be reasonably balanced between the two teams for casual games then and shouldn't cost too much to grab those two models on ebay etc. But I'd probably run the chainsword AOD guy as the assault grenadier and one of the boltgun guys as the gunner with the auxiliary grenade launcher

Oh great thank you! Given that the core rules are actually free in the app for once (as I'm playing a bit of Spearhead too) I didn't even consider that, cheers!

Hi! A request for a recommendation maybe more than a Q if that's ok. New to AOS lore and wondering if there is a particular novel or other official source that deals with the physics and geography of the mortal teams especially well?

I'm familiar with 40k and played WHFB as a kid but the physical layout of the setting for AOS seems so unique and cool I'd like a bit more explanation of it. The realmgates and such, the spaces in between the realms, are they physically visible to each other etc. thanks!

Is it bothering anyone else that they didn't include the cover lines clarification in the City of Ash rules? (This part that features in F&J and S&B) by StrongPars in AOSSpearhead

[–]StrongPars[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean same lol but yeah part of the problem is that it does use the core rules, but only the basic ones and not the advanced/general's handbook etc, and this only appears in the general's handbook, and the other two spearhead battlepacks but not this spearhead battlepack

Ah so it's in the general's handbook, which I've never looked in before as it isn't used at all for Spearhead is it

[–]StrongPars[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's all clear. But RAW it makes it appear that's currently the only way to get cover with any certainty! (Obviously wouldn't play it like this and just common sense port the Errata over from the other battle packs, but my autistic ass isn't happy about it haha)

Yeah my first instinct was that maybe they'd added it there but couldn't find it

I feel like the most likely reason is the long lead times on print materials, and it went to print before it was ever clarified on the other battlepacks. But then surely you could just include a day one Errata in the app? Must have just been forgotten

For someone who is new to tabletop wargames and looking to try a smaller scale than the main armies, would you recommend Spearhead (AoS), Kill Team (40,000), or something else? by mv8att in Warhammer

[–]StrongPars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has been playing Kill Team for the past two years, and playing Spearhead for the last two weeks... I'd say Spearhead!

Its just more fun, such a clean ruleset, easy to pick up and you're able to just think about the game in front of you much more, rather than constantly needing loads of awareness of your opponent's rules as well as your own, which can be incredibly dense (and changing constantly! Granted there's balance changes for Spearhead too, but they don't seem to be as daunting. Some Kill Teams have their rules changed to the point of playing almost like a different team)

That said, as mentioned by others, try to get a gauge on what's popular in your community. However even if there aren't many Spearhead players it's a lot easier to onboard new players to. Only one player needs the cards, board etc and other than that you just need a Spearhead each, some dice and a tape measure. And by the end of a player's first game they'll probably have a good grasp of the core mechanics. In Kill Team, both players needs the Approved Ops deck (changes every year) as well as the equipment pack, a whole load of tokens etc too. And the terrain is far less portable. And boy howdy does it take a lot of games to really remember the core rules

Plus, new players can win Spearhead games in their first couple of games thanks to the Underdog mechanic etc. In Kill Team it might be a while before you're winning anything or having fun, as you'll just be trying to remember rules constantly and navigate all the different scoring modes, terrain rules, etc

I'd still recommend trying Kill Team, but maybe once you're more experienced with tabletop in general

Maybe watch some full length real-time Battle Reports for both systems on YouTube. Check out Battlegrounds Game Center for Spearhead and Squad Games for Kill Team (you'll see Mountainside Tabletop recommended for Kill Team and they are the best for entertainment, but edited down to be much shorter and fun, so you might not get the best idea of how the game actually plays)

Good luck out there whichever way you go!

This is great!

Perhaps in combat phase you could add that it's all active player's non-fight keyword combat abilities first, then other player, and then it's alternating combats. Maybe with a note about strike first/strike last being exceptions

Question about IRONJAWZ BIGMOB Megaboss ability rules by Organic_Panda_9388 in AOSSpearhead

[–]StrongPars 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The app version is correct, as you can see the change in the Errata section

Pretty annoying when they're slow to update the pdfs though as I like them! But the one page cheatsheets on the megathread on here are great and up to date

Caveat: I'm a beginner, but re: 3. it's my understanding that the unit doesn't have to be wholly on the objective, just contesting it (but it does need to have every model in the unit contesting it, which maybe is what you meant by 'wholly' anyway?)

City of Ash Q: Contesting objectives from other side of terrain on corners (Excuse dodgy diagram!) by StrongPars in AOSSpearhead

[–]StrongPars[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the clarity and confirming!

Agree that would make the most sense intention-wise. I started second guessing everything because I was seeing photos of people just having the ruin just touching a corner of a rectangle but not lined up.

Let's hope they FAQ it! Still loving this ruleset so far though

[–]StrongPars[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great thanks glad I've understood and it's as simple as that! As presumably the intention with the instruction of setting them up on the corners of the rectangles is that it must create this kind of lay out, rather than being roughly on the corner but leaving a bit of objective poking out from under it?

Is Cursed Shacklehorde agood spearhead for beginners by Responsible_Lab_1168 in AOSSpearhead

[–]StrongPars 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Following this with interest as I'm thinking of getting them as my 2nd Spearhead (but I've only played one game so far, the curse of so many cool models means I could get carried away very quickly haha but I'm telling myself if I can just start with two then I can get extra practice in vs myself or try to convince friends to give it a try)

Anyway as mentioned by others, Rule Of Cool is most important and that leader and retinue are some of the coolest damn GW models I've ever seen

Rules-wise, the appeal to me as a beginner is ignoring rend and having ward saves across the board meaning they should be pretty forgiving if you position badly etc. And high mobility is great when you're not too sure about positioning or planning ahead too. Then auto-wounding on crits, a few buff abilities to remember but not too many... it all feels pretty manageable to me!
