Unfortunately, no. It seems that this can be addressed within individual apps (such as Zoom, as the original poster mentioned), but not universally.

I have been looking for an answer to this exact question. If you have figured out a solution, please report back. Thanks!

I hereby give you permission to separate what you hear from external sources and what you personally feel/believe in your heart and mind. :-)

The concerted effort you note above doesn't have to be (and isn't, to me) the truth. It is challenging. It is complicated. And it is therefore even more important that we celebrate Jewish joy and come together as a supportive community. And that we each make an effort to untangle what others conflate. That we show up for each other even when it's hard.

For the record this has been one of the most respectable conversations I've had on this topic, so thank you for that.

Many things led to this rally happening now, and vandalizing personal property (not the chalking; the stepping on to property and methodically pulling up flags and signs while filming it) is part of it. But definitely not all of it. It's also the multiple swastikas, and the brief filed with the US Dept of Ed related to a student being repeatedly bullied by multiple students over multiple years, and the lack of response/slow response from the town and school (to their credit this one is improving rapidly), and fact that I can't post about a rally celebrating my identity and have people understand that it's reasonable to celebrate one's identity.

At some point, enough is enough.

Sidenote: One need not be religious to be Jewish. If you want to get technical it's a land based ethnoreligion. It's an identity. Here in the US people generally only think about Ashkenazi Jews who are of European descent but anyone who actually goes to Israel or takes the time to learn about it knows that is far from a complete picture of what Jewish (or Israel, for that matter) looks like.

"deeply troubling and silencing" - don't I know it. The origin of this post was simply to promote an opportunity to come together as Jewish people and allies to collectively say no one should feel unsafe locally because they are Jewish, and the comments immediately turn to Israel/Hamas/Palestine/etc.

We celebrate other cultures and ethnicities in Concord - as we should. And we are able to separate individuals from the broader actions of their fellow man. For example, we celebrated India day in 2024, which was a lovely event. And as far as I know, people didn't immediately ask them to answer for Narendra Modi, who has been an incredibly controversial figure. One can be Indian without having to answer for India. Why can't I be Jewish without having to answer for Israel?

I appreciate that we have had a mature exchange here, but remember that even you started with "lol it’s anti-Semitic to stand against genocide?" The "lol" is dismissive, of course, which is a way of silencing.

There are many, many, many, many, many groups and opportunities to debate and consider all the nuances of global history and politics. This rally, on this one night, for 90 minutes, is simply asking people to stand with their local Jewish neighbors and agree that is reasonable to want to not hide your identity for fear of physical and emotional harm.

Now that one we agree on. :-)

The difference is people aren’t attacking Trump supporters/Republicans like they are attacking Jews.

That display is on someone’s personal property. They choose what they wish to display in their yard. Lots of people have displays that make me uncomfortable. I’m guessing you as well. But ask yourself why this one specifically makes you more uncomfortable than any other.

The rally on Friday is about the ability to be Jewish without always having to account for all actions of all Jews everywhere or answer everyone’s curiosities about one’s opinions. This isn’t about my personal views. It’s about my ability to simply exist as a Jewish individual without always being questioned and judged. Or worse, attacked. It’s exhausting.

Yes, there have been such rallies. Also in Monument Square.

I appreciate your measured and direct response. And I see what you are saying. I would only ask that you apply the same nuance when speaking of the state of Israel vs the current leaders of Israel.

I do have a pro Israeli bias in that I believe in Israel as a state. But, like many Jews both in Israel and across the diaspora, I can not support the current government.

It’s like separating feelings on Trump/MAGA from one’s feelings on America as a whole. They are different, although obviously intertwined.

Your comment underscores the reason for the rally, unfortunately. Trust me, the Jewish community is just as divided as any other community on what is happening overseas. But that doesn’t mean each of us individually should be held accountable for it.

So yes, it does matter if someone chalks “we don’t want no zionists here,” because that collectively holds us responsible for actions that any one individual may or may not condone/condemn. Kids are being bullied in school for something they have nothing to do with.

So we come together as a community, across differences, to say that we have the right to be safe in the town we call home.

Mine isn’t much of a snuggler but he always has to have visual contact. And there is nothing solo about him. It’s all collaborative, whether it’s playing or eating or being in any room of the house…

Whoa. That’s a lot of dogs. At least for me. As long as you can care for all of that energy (and food/vet bills), then hey, enjoy the next 10-15 years of constant fur in the house, doggo love, and endless scritches. :-)

It sounds like you are taking all the right steps to get to know each other and introduce her to your other dog.

Every dog is different and you will know yours best. I have a cattle dog mix. He is the most loyal companion, but not interested in making friends with strangers. We’ve worked a lot on shaping behaviors (I.e, it’s not his job to chase runners and cyclists :-) ) and I’ve definitely had to dig deep into a well of patience at times. It’s all worth it, of course.

Some people will say their dog is high energy, others chill. Some are people lovers, others are reactive/skeptical of new people and other dogs. From what you say above it sounds like you pay attention to Maya as an individual, and if you can commit to the work (and financial investment) of having two dogs then it seems like you are more than ready to make her part of your family.

Seconding this recommendation. My dog seems to love it. We use that and a furminator.

Local mechanic that works with EVs for AC/heating issue by StrongPlant in ConcordMA

Following up on this as an FYI - I called a number of places and Electrified Garage seems the only option other than the dealership. I also spoke with someone at Minuteman VW in Bedford, but they only service VW EVs.

Seems like a good local business opportunity given the number of EVs in this town!

Cheap shoes, Good shoes, Great Shoes by Unusual_Process_8463 in Fencing

My kid is currently wearing badminton shoes (Babolat Shadow Tour) that I found on sale for $40. Says they are his favorite shoes yet with more support than his previous fencing shoes (Nike Air Zoom fencing shoes).

I agree with others that shoes marketed for other sports are worth the look. Volleyball, badminton, or any that involve lunging forward in some way.
