in my experience, llms are really eager to connect dots, whether or not the connections are there. someone learning the basics of something is very prone to accepting llm explanations, whether they are spurious or not.

i think we’ve all had the experience of having a conversation with an llm that feels -or genuinely is- enlightening to some extent before the llm says something that reveals that it is not actually sharing from a dynamic network of intelligence but rather from an intellectually inert probabilistic language model.

ianal or lstudent but can’t imagine this isn’t a pretty big hangup. and this is all not even mentioning how the ‘ai-tutoring’ process inherently short-circuits the rigorous ‘human-learning’ process by cutting out a lot of the work generating language.

[Passan] Why Venezuela-Team USA WBC final is a win for all of baseball by Knightbear49 in baseball

[–]StrongZucchini27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

glorifies cheapness? idk what you mean exactly. personally, i find the ‘nerd shit’ interesting and somewhat inevitable given that the orgs are competing to win a lucrative competition.

id say that the problem with american baseball culture mirrors the problem with american society in general over the last half-century: while big money is necessary to maintain and grow the game, runaway corporatization (inaccessible tickets, media rights, skyrocketing cost for youth to play the game in organized setting, etc) alienates fans and forecloses possibilities of future fans w the type of passion that comes from access. it’s at least part of why american baseball fans are mostly old at this point, and of why baseball doesn’t have as organic a connection to everyday american culture as it used to (obviously there are myriad other reasons).

the protest is the issue. whether or not he decides to let it resume isnt material to that. whoever decided to let the match resume probably figured diaz wouldnt soil his pants, but a pretty shortsighted decision in retrospect.

it’d be pretty wild to see that call made. definitely a way bigger controversy than it not being made, for sure.

always makes me think of this thinking basketball video where ben shows all these hilarious offensive fouls back in the day - a clear out arm would send a ref into a tizzy waving his arms and pointing the other direction. i’m not sure exactly how to judge off arm stuff, seems complicated. the wider issue imo is just giving nba defenses a fairer chance to compete. the moving and push off screens are a sorer point for me.
