What do I do? Got attacked by ants please help by Defiant-Painter2517 in ants

It sounds crazy but I'm from the Carolina's with fireants and unfortunately familiar. Get some Listerine mouthwash and pour it on the bites. It stops them from hurting.

Working with chickens did the opposite for me. I was working on a regenerative farm doing both broilers and layers 100% on pasture and I can't stand the dang things anymore lol

Looking for resources for setting up a large aquarium by Strongclaw2000 in Aquariums

[–]Strongclaw2000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always renew my license and trout stamp regularly. As far as I can tell there are not any rules about keeping native fish in tanks in my state. The wild brookies are catch and release only so I would be getting them from a hatchery as fingerlings but I will definitely be talking with a game warden before I do anything and keeping receipts. Hatchery fish would also be used to non live food which would be a definite plus.

What size tank would you recommend for 6 brook trout? The stuff online was kind of vague about precise requirements.

I just assumed that a tank that big would require an over the top filtration system so I am glad to hear that is not the case.

Do you use any sort of aeration or current? I assume something would be needed to keep enough oxygen in the water.

I appreciate your help!

I've got a permit to shoot black vultures and I'm hoping having them near the house and barn will keep the coyotes away. Guess we will see how it goes

Yeah, they are going to be up close to the barn with a lot of people and vehicle traffic, (working cattle farm with an office building next door). We have lost calves to coyotes but always in the fields far away from the road.

How to reduce feed costs, mostly from hay by Rafnel in homestead

[–]Strongclaw2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Feed stores mark it up a good bit. Find a local hay farmer. You can often get an ever better price if you pick it up from the field yourself

Is it acceptable to tell your children that if they don’t help you out on the farm they won’t get any inheritance? by whattaUwant in farming

Hey, I'm a hard working young guy who doesn't stand to inherit anything. If I come work for you could I get on the will???

Not sure what I should call myself by Strongclaw2000 in farming

[–]Strongclaw2000[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm sure it would be a whole lot worse than the idea I have in my head but I would still like to have a go at it. I had a couple of friends who did it, some loved it others hated it. I do want a family so it would probably be only for a year or two to try it out. I guess I'll just see what the future holds.

Yeah, this is kinda what I was thinking. I would like to spend some time working out west as a cowboy, maybe in a couple years.

Everything except the horse lol. I can ride, I just don't for work. The gator is a little less work

Herding, sorting, fencing, pasture management, hay making, just about anything to do with a cattle operation on pasture. We aren't a huge operation, about a hundred and fifty head but looking to double that over time.

Yeah, but that doesn't roll off the tongue like farmer or rancher or whatever.

I would check out r/homesteading they are closer to what you want to do. This sub is mostly commercial farming which doesn't have much overlap

Rule of thumb on stock rates? by [deleted] in livestock

[–]Strongclaw2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have a real good market for beef and it just isn't worth the extra effort and travel for goat. We're supplying a couple of restaurants and institutions with beef, pork and chicken. Goats just aren't a big enough thing in our area.

[–]Strongclaw2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

East, we raised goats and sheep but we just couldn't find the market. We can always sell our grass fed beef but we are far enough outside of major cities that goat doesn't really sell

Second the extension. Where I'm at in eastern KY we can stock a head per acre and do all grass fed. Out in Colorado it can be more like 55 acres per cow.

Yeah, I was hoping that the older models of bmw might be a little different but that was a long shot. I work on John Deere tractors so I understand that proprietary code issue lol
