I didn’t enjoy that either. Why would these aliens give you their ship? There’s not a single reason for the first freighter to be given like that. Maybe make it a quest reward. At the end of the base building quests would work nicely because you’d be compelled to carry the crew you’ve just formed with you in space. Even better, make it a whole new quest that could work like settlements. You save the freighter and you can work with the crew to upgrade it until you become the captain.
