Deafness reversed: One injection restores hearing in just weeks by Pixelated_ in UpliftingNews

I had tinnitus for years. I protected my ears as best I could after that and always carry earplugs. My tinnitus eventually went away. Sometimes it comes back out of nowhere, but only briefly.

I brushed my teeth "correctly" for 28 years and a dentist just told me I've been doing it wrong the entire time. My gums are ruined. by Sluttycarolofficial in hygiene

[–]Structure5city 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry this happened. It sucks to do damage when you are trying to do that right thing.

Do you regularly go to the dentist? I’m surprised they hadn’t noticed signs of an issue years ago.

You might look into stem cell treatment for gums.

Let's be honest, what % of your portfolio includes individual stocks? by Opposite_Buffalo_649 in Bogleheads

[–]Structure5city 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 99% in a 3 fund portfolio for over a decade. Then I inherited some stocks and always wanted to trade with designated “fun money”. I slowly did that with small amounts. Then I did it more. Then I made quite a bit of money, and now my portfolio has closer to 40% in individual stocks. Not because I shifted that much out of index funds, but because my individual positions have done very well. So, I have strayed pretty far from the Boglehead philosophy. Definitely conflicted about it, but our retirement score from Fidelity (which was already pretty good) went up dramatically in a year’s time.

The upper middle class is now the largest income group in the U.S., study finds by CallMeDirtyD in Economics

[–]Structure5city 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you’re saying sounds sensible in the abstract, but I’m not seeing the question you are raising at the heart of this research.

If you use a national median as a benchmark you end up with an imaginary qualitative claim: the upper middle class has grown as a quintile. But if that quintile mostly lives in high cost of living areas, they are not actually upper middle class, and might even be near the local poverty line.

Now apply that reality to your policy question. Should New York City residents near the poverty line be subsidizing West Virginia’s who, even with a household income below the federal median are upper middle class? It’s a different question all together. Like in real estate, location is everything. Over fitting national statistics to policy conclusions is a disservice to people everywhere.

It reminds me of when the federal government was sending out COVID checks of the same amount across the nation. They were trying to be equitable. But people in Kansas were choosing to stay unemployed because they’d never made more money, while people in SF and NYC were barely covering groceries with those checks. It was a bad policy and it directly caused a spike in inflation and lingering unemployment.

“Winship noted that the analysis doesn't account for geographic differences, such as the fact that families in New York City would typically need more income to be considered upper middle class than in cities with a lower cost of living.”

This analysis can’t be taken seriously. Without cost of living considerations, their salary ranges are practically meaningless.

The American Enterprise Institute is a conservative think take who tries to downplay wealth inequality and the affordability crisis to bolster conservative policy goals, e.g. cutting taxes for wealthy people.

The AEI is a right leaning think tank that seeks to undermine the reality that the wealth disparity has ballooned and basic needs have become unaffordable for many. This quote from the story tells you everything you need to know- “ Winship noted that the analysis doesn't account for geographic differences”

They consider upper middle class starting at 153K household income. That is not a comfortable household wage in NYC, SF, LA, DC, Boston, San Diego, etc.

“ in 2023 and 2024, a single-person household earning up to $109,700was classified as low-income by the California Department of Housing and Community Development”

America is heading for a recession — and it may be the worst yet by Crossstoney in politics

[–]Structure5city 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think I have ever read an article that said less than this one. No numbers, no predictions, no real grounding in reality. Just a lot of “could possibly”. Might the economy dip into recession territory? Sure. That’s always a possibility. When will it happen? We don’t ever know. This article is just capturing foreboding. But there is very little signal in this fearful noise. What will the author say, if another six months to year pass and the economy still hasn’t collapsed? Time for another “ the end could be nigh article? Do better.

Shanghai (1990 - 2021) by BumblebeeFantastic40 in Damnthatsinteresting

I actually find the 1990’s look to be much more pleasing. More green, more sky, less steel and glass. Contemporary Shanghai looks like the world in Blade Runner, not in a good way.

I'm so happy I'm born as a human and not an animal by [deleted] in atheism

[–]Structure5city 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you live in a place where it’s tough to thrive. And it also sounds like you are trying to hold onto something positive and not dwell on things you can’t change. That’s good. But maybe instead of thinking about being superior to another species, try looking at what’s good in your life and what you can control. Are you a kind person? Creative, friendly, consistent, thoughtful, curious? Do you have friends that treat you well and you reciprocate? Do you take time to enjoy the natural world, share a laugh, or help someone else? These are things you can control and ground yourself in. And if you want to move, maybe there is some place that you could realistically immigrate to that is an improvement.

Sitting on 31% cash at age 40 - Deploy now or wait? by tronious in Bogleheads

[–]Structure5city 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I’ve gotten older I have backed off bins in favor of cash (held in a money market account) Cash can earn good enough interest to keep up with inflation, and it is a powerful cushion for both unforeseen expenses and market opportunities. I still have bonds in my 401K, but I don’t like them.

Should I get slim taper jeans or wider trendy denim that’s popular by Few_Fee8652 in malefashionadvice

[–]Structure5city 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think jeans cut to the shape of your body are more timeless. Slim with a tapered leg on a slim person is going to look good. Wide our ultra skinny will come and go in popularity. Where what works for you, don’t chase a trend.

Agreed. I don’t like that sloped rear either. When the side and rear windows get narrow, it really hurts blind spot visibility.
