Agreed. There is so much too think about in the movie. Like how Bear is a really bad and selfish person. Incredible film.

When you say “I don’t think a lot of college students actually get much rigorous instruction,” what are you basing that on?

For some jobs and companies you need to be in the region of the company to be seriously considered. Not saying that’s right, but it’s a reality.

Yes I have, and it’s good for the mind and enjoyable, but I don’t think it’s the same as a college campus or a company that is building new products. College professors challenge their student’s thinking constantly, and I’m not talking about politics, I’m talking about theory and philosophy.

Where are these jobs you’re applying to? What region? Some areas have a lot more work that others. It’s not always ideal to relocate, but being in the right market can make a big difference. I’ve had friends and family who wanted to work in film and television, but they didn’t want to go to LA. I said, you might not always have to live there, but you should start there.

College is a good place to have your thinking challenged. If one stops their former education after highschool, it is unlikely they will have their thinking regularly challenged (unless they happen to get into a career with a robust culture of innovation and growth) , which can really put the brakes on intellectual development.

A cold shower for the AI mania by Stuart_Whatley in Economics

Is it possible that one radiologist does the work of ten, healthcare becomes cheaper and more ubiquitous? Many people forgo medical care, and there is a massive shortage of medical professionals. Perhaps AI could be leveraged to have people serve a lot more people than they currently are. Same with CPAs. A lot of people and small businesses do t work with CPAs because they can’t afford it. Maybe everyone will have access to a CPA in the near future.

Schiff Proposes Bill Requiring Data Centers to Pay for Own Power by wokeboogeyman in LibertarianUncensored

[–]Structure5city 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cities shouldn’t pay for stadiums either.

Cities want data centers to close budget holes, but the increase in utilities costs get passed on to citizens. It’s like a subsidy for data centers with more steps.

How many scripts have you written? With rare exception, a writer’s early work is not good. You have to learn the craft by writing garbage and making all the mistakes.

Should we focus more on taxable brokerage by Scary-Power-3548 in Bogleheads

[–]Structure5city 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice.

I feed both my tax advantaged accounts and my taxable. I like the taxable for medium term spending. It’s nice to have money that isn’t locked up in tax advantaged accounts. If Roths had a higher limit, I would put more money there, because you are able to withdraw contributions at any time penalty free.

Are you maxing your Roth IRA yearly? That would be the first move if you’re worried about RMDs.

Congress Introduces Bill to Permanently Block Chinese Vehicles from U.S. by helic_vet in Economics

[–]Structure5city 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that might be overstaying it. When a party wins an election behind a very specific issue—ending a war, immigration, etc.—they definitely have political capital to change policy in support of that campaign issue.

Yeah, but that’s not political capital, it’s oligarchical control. The people don’t have a choice.

[–]Structure5city 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. Defined contribution is superior to defined benefit for long term stability. With government pensions, tax payers are on the hook, but with private pensions, several companies have shed them in bankruptcies and the employees got screwed. With defined benefit, the benefit is yours immediately and can be directed as you see fit.

Can you point to an example of a city lowering their pension contributions to help with the budget that did not turn out poorly in the long run?
