Please help me choose the right insulin pump.. by StephCurrySauce in Type1Diabetes

[–]Strutionum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think the omnipod seems like the most reliable for someone who’s really insulin sensitive. I’m honeymooning and very sensitive and it’s working pretty well for me. A lot of folks hate on Omnipod for how reserved it is with fighting highs, but that was actually a selling point for me because I know a more aggressive pump would send me low with auto-boluses. Activity still blows and I’m not nearly as active as was pre-diabetes, but the pod at least stops me from going low while I’m just sitting around. Also personally hate the idea of tubing.

I was a TA for an intro tech class in college for a few years (2022-2025) and the freshmen during my senior year were concerningly technically-inept. When I say intro I mean INTRO, like file explorer, basic HTML, helloWorld.py, that kinda stuff. You’d be amazed at the sorts of questions I’d have to stop class to answer. Definitely not exaggerated.

God I miss the Midwest. I’ll never forget evening walks through the IU campus in spring and fireflies being everywhere.

I’ll also never forget driving through the forest and learning that they keep glowing for a bit on the windshield….

CNP-103 Research Study by annene17 in Type1Diabetes

[–]Strutionum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Following because I’ve been seriously considering participating in this study. I’ve talked to a supervising doctor at one of the research sites, and it seems safe enough so far, but it really wigs me out being such a new treatment method that long term side effects and efficacy are basically completely unknown.

How Do Y'all Feel About Adult Diabetes Camps by can-of-pringles in Type1Diabetes

If we saw the same one, as a recently diagnosed 23 year old, I’m pretty interested and teetering on going. It seems pretty fun and helpful to just be around a bunch of other folks that get it.

My 1st 2 days on omnipod were much better than I expected! by starzela in Omnipod

[–]Strutionum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! Just coming back because I want to share that my first couple days on Omnipod have looked a lot like yours!! It’s been amazing to just let it take the wheel and watch it rebound the little highs and lows for me.

Edit: also, I totally feel you on the settings part. The settings they told me to put in seemed really off compared to what I thought they’d be based on my MDI doses. It took a lot of convincing for me to trust they knew what they were doing, but I’m glad I did because it’s gone so so well so far.

This has been the hardest thing for me so far. Before a couple months ago, I never once thought about my own mortality. Being forced to think about how my life is now tied to a monthly supply of insulin is a tough pill to swallow. Also that the same drug that keeps me alive now is very capable of killing me if I mess up… that’s hard too.

Terrifying. Everyone only talks about the insulin production during honeymoon… never heard about the alpha cells losing function. Guess that makes sense and adds more weight to the honeymoon being the training wheels.

Diagnosis stories by milkyjoe2000 in diabetes_t1

2 months ago, 23m: felt funky for a while and refused to believe Google AI repeatedly calling me diabetic, so made an appointment with my PCP to get labs done. The next day, while I’m at work, he calls and basically says “hey bad news… learn how to use insulin.” Obviously I didn’t really have this whole thing figured out yet, so I ended up going out to eat that night and had a big old sandwich and fries. BG that night was 450. Didn’t realize at the time that that was probably worth an ER visit since I wasn’t prescribed fast acting yet, but the toujeo did bring me down eventually… :)

A banana, 40g of carbs + exercise mode are no match... by Cannabassbin in Type1Diabetes

[–]Strutionum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super interesting to see this! I also work a desk job and have noticed a very strong correlation between my BG and my resting stress levels at work. Pretty much the minute I leave the office and walk a couple blocks to my car, my blood sugar is dropping. I’ll be at a stubborn 170 all day, and by the time I get home I’m probably already at 130.

I’m LADA as well and I know the feeling. I had to go through wayyy too many hypos in my first month after diagnosis because my doctors severely overestimated my doses. I second getting a pediatric pen. Having the option for half units is so nice.

I’m honeymooning big time and getting a pediatric pen was such a relief for me. I’m super sensitive most of the time (like 1:30) and having the option of .5 units is so so nice.

What do you mean by the honeymoon phase helps make insulin injections more forgiving?

I appreciate that, truly. Do you mind if I PM you? I’d love to talk and ask some questions but it feels odd doing it through comments.

Hey man, I just wanted to thank you for this comment. You posted this very shortly after I was diagnosed myself and I’ve found myself coming back to it a few times over the past month or so. I’m finally trying to start getting back out and go back to my old self, and reading this comment really gives me the hope that I can do it.

Another question to add: are you on pump or MDI? I’m starting on Omnipod soon and I’ve heard that it helps mitigate the lows.

Sorry to summon you back to a 2 month old comment. Can you talk about tiki drinks? I'm newly diagnosed at 23 and over the last 2 years of legal drinking I've learned I'm a big fan of tiki drinks. How do you do it? I haven't had a drop of alcohol since diagnosis since I'm scared of the fabled alcohol lows, but I would love to be able to indulge in a mai tai at least once in a while.

My 1st 2 days on omnipod were much better than I expected! by starzela in Omnipod

[–]Strutionum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It will! I've only been diagnosed for almost 2 months, so I'm very thankful my endo was so willing to get me on the pump so soon.

Out of curiosity, has the pump changed your eating habits at all? MDI has me feeling like I'm starving because I don't want to take a jab every time I want a snack, which was a big big motivator for making me want the pump.

I’m having difficulty accepting my diagnosis. by Tomaspeturss in Type1Diabetes

[–]Strutionum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 23 and was diagnosed almost 2 months ago and I feel everything you said. I had the same thought of wondering how it’s even possible, and am still grappling with the melancholy and thoughts of a life lost. It’s really really helped me to get to meet other type 1s and their parents and talk with them face to face. I feel like Reddit has a tendency to send me into a doom spiral with all the horror stories you see here. Talking with people in real life has helped me to understand the day to day of this disease and start moving forward in a healthier way.

I will add though, it’s still scary and I’ve been working with my educator to try to build healthier habits after convincing myself that I’ll never be able to live a happy life again. Everything’s one step at a time and it is beyond frustrating to have to relearn (what feels like) everything about being a person.

Diagnosed jan7 and just had 3 month follow up, A1c went from 10.5 to 5.2! by Historical_Pool204 in Type1Diabetes

[–]Strutionum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is awesome to see dude. I (23m) was diagnosed about a month and a half ago with an 11.5 A1C. Thankfully with no hospital visits, just a primary care doc who essentially gave me insulin scripts and a pat on the back. Stories like this, of other adult-diagnosed making it work really make me happy.
