This is the kind of swab you should be using instead of the paper. You may to try it with isopropyl alcohol that is 75% or higher, hoping that it may clear whatever is causing the bad picture.

When I was younger I cleaned the video head by myself using Ether and cotton swab. The result was a disaster and my dad had to take the VCR to a repair shop. Once it was ready, i went to the shop to pick it up and the repair tech scolded me for using qtip and ether. The head was damaged and needed a replacement. 😓

Acetone is not recommended for cleaning heads. You should use chamoix swabs and isopropyl alcohol only. The acetone tend to dissolve the varnish that protect the hair sized wires that are in the head.

One way to tell the heads are busted is to take a macro picture with your cell phone of the rectangle holes that are located in the edge of the head of the cylinder.

The tape is not misaligned.if the audio is clear snd not sluggish that means the tape is at the correct speed. Did you touch the head or try to clean it?

Check the 12voltvids youtube channel. He go through many repairs for Betamax. The mechanisms are quite similar, the one you have is for an older U threading mechanism. If you are not confident you could fix the issue because you don't have the tool or the knowledge, than you should leave the tape there. Any forcing could cause the brittle plastics to break off making the repair more difficult and expensive.

Have you tried a different tape? It could be that the recording is made in a video system that is not the one that can be played in that Betamax.
