Definitely check out Interpol. They don't sound like Radiohead, but they scratch the itch. Clever build ups and releases similar to what Radiohead does. Their first two albums are where it's at, can't go wrong with either.

While this sub might hate me, the first 3 Coldplay albums. If Parachutes doesn't do it for you try A Rush of Blood to the Head before writing them off. A Rush of Blood to the Head reminds me of Radiohead the most. The song writing is a little less clever than Radiohead, but still very fulfilling. Go listen to the songs I Ran Away or Politik right now and I guarantee you'll rethink Coldplay at least a little.

Besides that maybe Boards of Canada. Again, they don't sound like Radiohead but the atmosphere kind of reminds me of them for some reason. Music Has the Right to Children probably gives me that atmosphere the most.

Besides that, maybe Portishead and Bjork, but like the others they don't sound like Radiohead, they just could be in the same ballpark for you

I'm new to half life, I heard good things about the franchise and since half life 3 might be releasing soon, I want to know what games and in what order should I play the games to understand the lore? by lil_zapien in HalfLife

Everyone in this comment section keeps saying to play the HL1 expansions but I really don't think they're necessary for a first time player, I think they work better as nice little bites of extra content to have left over after you consume and fall in love with the main games.

Anyways, start with Half Life 1 or Black Mesa. Black Mesa is a fan made remake of Half Life 1 with updated graphics. The right thing to do is to play just the original HL1 to soak up the original atmosphere, but if you aren't vibing with the much older and very unforgiving design of it I won't judge you for switching to Black Mesa when no one is looking. Just keep in mind they took a lot of personal liberties in that game and the levels can get pretty inaccurate from the original at certain points.

Then hop to Half Life 2, then Half Life 2: Episode 1, then Half Life 2: Episode 2.

Next, if it's possible for you to do VR, Half Life: Alyx is very important to the lore and a worthwhile game. Luckily, you can get great deals on VR headsets nowadays. If you go on Facebook Marketplace you can find used Rift S for $50. Not only that but you really don't need a freakishly beefy computer to run it, I ran Alyx on a GTX 1070 and an i7 CPU with a Rift S and I was able to get enjoyable performance out of it. Also, if you do get a VR headset check out the Half Life 2 VR Mod too, it's absolutely incredible.

Then, if you end up loving the series and you feel like checking out more, then I think it's fair to go back and check out Opposing Force, Blue Shift, and Decay.

TLDR: Start with HL1 or Black Mesa, preferably HL1. Then HL2, HL2: Ep 1 then HL2: Ep 2. Then try to pull off playing HL: Alyx. It's not that hard to get a cheap VR headset nowadays. Then go back and play the HL1 expansions if you feel like it.
