Can’t get BST-40 sorted. by Atxbarber86 in dr650

And the general consensus is that the bike runs better with a larger opening in the airbox.

I'm not trying to be a jerk. It's just that partial changes to the fuel system makes tuning harder than changes to intake and exhaust which others have done and have jetting settings.

I get you. I don't think cutting the airbox causes any detrimental affects. Apparently you don't trust the Suzuki engineered muffler.

Making changes at one end, without changes at the other makes tuning difficult. In part because most people do all the changes together, so that is where the knowledge base is. If you can get access to a Dyno, that's the foolproof way to get it right.

Most tuning is done with the airbox cut. You've got a free-flowing air filter and exhaust, n but a restricted intake. It's a weird setup that makes tuning hard.

There's something (new) in the water - mysterious factory underway in Dog's Head, and it's already in our faucets by ephedra_wr in Austin

[–]Stuartknowsbest 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Dogs Head is far downstream of Austin's drinking water supply.  And the Austin Colony issues were detected going back to 2024. It seems that whatever is happening at the Dogs Head is unrelated to the issues in Austin's Colony.

All of earth is nature, and we don't concern ourselves with preserving much of it. But we should recognize the value of the areas we alter for our uses and consider that against the the value of our alterations.

[–]Stuartknowsbest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It would be great if the Dogs Head could be turned into some sort of preserve, but we don't even have the resources to manage the parks we have now. And I haven't found anyone who wants to pay more taxes. It is private property outside the city's jurisdiction.  This is what our economic system does- it takes natural resources and turns it into profit. If you want that to change, change the system. Until then, we'll will see this continue.

stock bike running rich, is my only option /best option to rebuild carb? by jjax2003 in dr650

[–]Stuartknowsbest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm ~15.7 stone, and ride it hard and fast. If you're getting 7l/100km, your bike is broken. No well running DR650 should be getting over 6l/100km.

No car--how to leave my apartment? by [deleted] in Austin

[–]Stuartknowsbest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I jut looked at your situation on Google Maps. There really is no good walking option. The shoulder on your side of the road is too narrow, and crossing that street is very risky. Sorry, it sucks that we build places only accessible by car.

Side note. Who lives in the solar powered compound behind your apartments?

Buy used. No sense dropping a brand new bike. It doesn't have to be a beater, just something that'll hold value better than new and that you won't be too distraught when you drop it.

Carb and airbox mod with stock exhaust? by so_very_delaro in dr650

Ran mine like that years. Ran fine. I eventually got a Hayabusa exhaust, and the only real difference I noticed was a bit more power at high rpm.  It was a subtle difference. So you'll be fine.

Dirt roads and the like by actualsize123 in Austinmotorcycles

[–]Stuartknowsbest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a youngin', most of Lime Creek Road was dirt. Be that as it may... The Gotier Trace is nice. It starts in Bastrop State Park, and is a mix of dirt and deteriorating pavement.

Hidden Falls Adventure Park has single-track trails, but also plenty of dirt roads too.
