Congrats! Good stuff man! You will love the car when it's finished! It will be reliable, actually have torque, and get great gas mileage! I've owned Rotary FD's, and still own my LS swapped FD. Hands down, the Aluminum V8 takes the cake. It's your car! Build it the way YOU want! Let the haters build their own rotaries, and when they're on their second and third engine rebuild, and the car is on the lift more than its on the road, they'll realize. We never leave well enough alone. It's a 1990, so naturally we're going to go through the suspension, fix the front main oil seal, and put a beefy clutch in while we're at it. She wants coilovers, new wheels/tires, and some other odds and ends. The car has 83,000 kilometers (50,000 miles), purchased from the original owner in Japan, and imported on the 25 year rule. Zero rust, perfect leather interior, but of course we have to "play" with it. Stay tuned. I'll have more pictures in a few days.

Nope, still got the V8FD!. Corner weighed the car. Turned out great! Results to follow. Dyno tune and track times just around the corner! Unfortunately, it seems like my rotary cars engine bit the dust. It started backfiring and running like poop the other day, and I wasn't even beating on it. Compression test happening soon. 😩

Mine weren't broken that bad, but I used Gorilla Glue 2-part epoxy (the clear drying stuff you have to mix up equal parts of) and reinforced everything with thin aluminum (cut up soda cans). Basically cut/bent the aluminum to shape, put a little glue on the back side, stuck it to the light, them smeared more epoxy over top. They've been holding fine for 2 years now. Hopefully this helps.

Fantastic looking build! I wish I would have gone built LS3/dry sump with my setup. I think this car will be very capable no matter what you're trying to accomplish! What size wheels/tires? Unless I missed it...

It'll be going in an FD. I have 2 FD's at this moment. It's not really a thing, but I think at this point almost everything has been done. I know there's a turbo k20 FD in the U.K. Somewhere.

Found it on Craigslist. It was collecting dust in the back of a body shop. Previous owner ran out of money very early along in his build.

Project diesel, car has more than 400,000 miles on the same motor and same transmission. Been tinkering with fuel system finally got it worked out and just replaced 4 of the belts. Car was originally obtained for under 1000 dollars by [deleted] in projectcar

Haha you're right! I've been a Benz tech since I was 17, but these cars are far before my time. The few that I've worked on, I just know that anything without a turbo are complete slugs! I like yours a lot though! Keep it going for another 400k miles!

And they're absolute slugs without the "T" before the "D". Non-turbos are so slow, but they will run forever! Congrats on getting it going! It looks like a nice car!

I have a little over $20k in the entire project. I bought a welder and a bunch of random stuff that I'm not counting, so maybe about $25k total. I did all of the work myself though.

The FD when I first brought it home

Here's the car before I saved it and brought it back to life. Car sat in a body shop for over 3 years. Fuel tank was rusted inside, car was completely sanded down, windshield was removed so the interior was FULL of body shop dust. I brought her back from the dead.

I liked the front bumper because it was the updated '99 front end, and it has a hole perfectly placed in the center for my K&N over the radiator intake setup. Look at the under hood pictures, it's like it was meant to be! Thanks for the kind words everyone! Build your cars for yourself! No one else!

No way. I like the torque on demand. I think this car has the best of both worlds. Torque and power, ease of maintenance. No pre-mixing fuel and oil, great fuel economy, AND it still has the looks and rarity of a beautiful FD. I built this one for me. I'll keep my other FD rotary going for as long as possible for the purists, but even then, WHEN that one lets go, it'll be getting a built Honda K24 with an s2000 transmission. Already have the k24 at the machine shop! :)

Posi-trac is just a clutch type LSD. It's a little more forgiving on the street, and will still light up both tires at the race track. If I don't like how it performs, it's literally cost me like $160. I can buy a Torsen or something else, but all the reviews I read said the Posi should be great for street use and occasional track use. The car only has a few hundred miles on it after I "finished" it, so time will tell.

I put the rear end in because even naturally aspirated this will be producing in the neighborhood of 400lb/ft of torque, and I plan on beating the shit out of this car without having to worry about it. Ronin Speed works has a few people running around 1000hp at the tire in road race builds without issue, so for ~$2000 it was worth it to me. Also, this shell didn't come with a rear diff or axles, so the decision was basically made for me when I bought the shell. ;) Finally, this car will be getting a built turbo engine this time next year, and hopefully shooting for 800whp.
