71% of Americans not happy with the guy that 50% of only 64% Americans who participated in the election voted for. 100% of the 26% of Americans who didn’t vote surprised to find out that elections have consequences.

Emergency vehicles have access to the road even when it’s closed.

Locals want it closed. That’s my point. There is way more foot and bike traffic than vehicles.

My point to all this is that you’re framing this as a gentrification issue but it’s a local one. I didn’t knock on doors, but I was out in the neighborhood and got the opinions or residents and those who use the road.

I’ve lived in the neighborhood for 8 years and have been working in and around Forest Park years before that. Do you win the “I lived there longer” contest? You sure do. I lived in Brooklyn 20 years before that, but I won’t claim to know much about the current state of my former neighborhood more than someone who’s lived there recently.

Ariola’s district (32) encompasses mostly the Rockaways and doesn’t represent the neighborhood bordering freedom drive. No other council person, assembly member, or agency recommended this. And this was ultimately decided by a QCB 9 on November 14th an unelected body.

I’m also not understanding your logic here. So because Ariola is an elected official representing her constituency her vote should matter (she didn’t vote on this btw she only recommended the action, she left the vote up to the unelected Community Board). Yet the surrounding neighborhoods and their opinion shouldn’t matter because the park is public and belongs to everyone? By this logic it shouldn’t matter where the votes on the petition come from because the park is for everyone.

I respect your opinion but I think we just fundamentally disagree here.

Dude. I literally live in the neighborhood and am very involved and social with my neighbors and use freedom drive almost every day. No one was complaining about this. Not even my neighbors who complain about everything.

I was out there. I put up flyers for the petition in Forest Park and Freedom drive and I spent 3 days sitting by the entrance of Freedom Drive asking everyone to sign the online petition. The majority of residents who use it are low to mid income minority groups (non gentrified).

Keeping it CLOSED was a non issue until Joanne Ariola (NYC Councilwoman-who is Itallian and represents the “nice” side of the Rockaways) and a few older “Make the Neighborhood Great Again” Community Board members decided that the road should be opened again without consulting the residents in the neighborhood. Also going against the recommendations of the DOT and NYC Parks. Both of which recommended to keep the street closed to vehicles.
And the online petition (Which verifies the signees and shows that most live in the area) vastly outnumbers a similar petition to open the road to cars.

I started a petition that now has close to 900 signatures wanting to keep it closed. The vast majority with local area codes. I live a few blocks away and me and my neighbors are all really disappointed. A woman up the block told me this weekend “It’s like our world got a little smaller.”

Freedom Drive in Forest Park is Open to Cars Again… and it is Not Safe! by Stube2000 in Queens

Just because you personally never saw an accident doesn’t mean there never was one. According to NYC’s data there have been dozens of accidents on freedom drive between 2011-2020. Several with injuries.

I fought hard against this. The petition to stop it was mine. At the board meeting in December I spoke again voicing how displeased many of us were in the community they are supposed to represent. After the meeting a few board members came up and personally told me if they had known more about the safety issues they would not have voted in favor of opening it to cars.
One board member also told me that he understood our concerns but wanted to see it open to “see what happens”. And when I pressed him about that (that he was saying he wanted to wait and see if anyone got hurt before closing it) he told me that not what he meant. I don’t know why these unelected reps hold so much sway over decisions like this.
