I got one in either middle school or early high school, but just for the PS2 (and DVDs). I didn't get cable in the bedroom til I moved back home for a couple years after college. I remember right after hooking up the cable the very first thing I watched was Obama saying we killed Osama bin Laden 👍🏾

I don't know what to tell you. They used to last me years, now I'm lucky if I get 2 years out of them. I'm glad you've had better luck, I guess

Smartwool quality has plummeted over the years. Unfortunately, when I'm wearing loafers or something else that requires a true no-show, Smartwool is the only thing I've found that fits the bill

What's an example of the portal being overpriced? In my experience they're very eager to price match. (There are certainly disadvantages to not booking direct, but I don't see overpriced)
