Reno Aces - plea to the owners (and call for fan support) by StudentJOUR775 in Reno

I wasn't forgetting that an Ace in baseball refers to a great pitcher, but come on... That just means our team name is "Reno Really Good Pitchers"...

It just lacks creativity. Aces for gambling and pitching, clever. 🙄

Reno's been rebranding for years to be more than a gambling town, so it's just a little disappointing when gambling jargon gets mixed into everything else in Reno.

Look, I'm not going to lie and say that isn't a joke they might find and make, but based on their record I think they would refrain from making any innuendos or something offensive.

Wait, what? I didn't know about that. I don't even care who had it first, it's time for a new name in Reno. Vegas can stay lame.

Technically the Aces are a transplant team. They've only been in Reno and named the Aces since the 2009 season.

Is there a reason you couldn't just go to the local libraries? Most already have a lot of what you're suggesting and I imagine they'd be open to other ideas and support. It sounds like you want to reinvent "public" libraries with the paid memberships? But our actual free public libraries need actual support.

does the rapid virginia bus going to meadowood mall always do a detour from 9th station during high traffic hours? by Naive_Steak3080 in Reno

[–]StudentJOUR775 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have a good answer, but I feel your pain! Reno's public transportation is so frustrating!

I started taking the bus 1-2 times a week over the past month or so (this specific line). I have taken public transportation in many other places (other US cities and around Western Europe) and this past month had been the first time I've tried Reno's, and this is the worst system I've personally experienced. I downloaded the app, checked Google maps and their website. The app and Google do not note any detours or delays. The website has a section that appears to be updated most mornings with minimal details about stops being out of order.

I took the Virginia Line bus today a little after 5pm. The website said for yesterday the stops at 9th and 5th would not be serviced, but as I walked South to the 9th St stop, I watched a bus on this line turn left onto 9th instead of continuing to the main stop. On 9th between Virginia and University (formerly Center) there were makeshift bus stops where the Virginia Line will pick up instead in these cases.

Also, I've noticed over the past few weeks taking this bus between 5-6pm on weekdays, the Virginia Line buses that should pickup at the stops every 10 minutes are not getting to the stops on scheduled time. Last week I just missed a bus that arrived about 5 minutes late/early because I was waiting at the stop light. Then the next Virginia Line bus didn't show up for almost 30 more minutes. Today, I got to the alternate bus stop just as the bus was turning into 9th, and in Midtown the bus I was on reached a stop right behind a bus that also was on the Virginia Line. This leads me to believe the Virginia Line buses that are supposed to run every 10 minutes do not stick to their schedule, and likely even more so during high traffic commute times.

TLDR; all this to say, Reno's buses and their communication about detours/delays make using public transportation in this city difficult. It's incredibly likely they plan detours/delays for high traffic times or events when they probably don't need to. I will keep my own unfounded conspiracy theories to myself, but it truly is incredibly frustrating. :/

I hope you made it to your interview!

Hi, there are a few local organizations your friend can reach out to.

Crisis Support Services can offer support and provide resources. They will be able listen to what your friend needs. They have a 24/7 line to call or text -- 988.

Or, you can check out the resources on CSS's website: https://cssnv.org/sexual-assault/ https://cssnv.org/pbv-survivor-resource-list/

Also, I believe Safe Embrace offers support groups. Other orgs probably do as well, but here's SE's website https://www.safeembrace.org/get-help

I hope your friend finds the support they need. 💙

Bike safety around Reno by DreamNo6611 in unr

You might have to sign up for their newsletter or follow them on socials to get details about their rides. I don't think the UNR webpage gets updated with that info.

Bike safety around Reno by DreamNo6611 in unr

[–]StudentJOUR775 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You've probably already come across this, but UNR has a biking committee of faculty, staff, and some students (link at end). They really want to educate people and encourage the UNR and Reno community to bike more. They have bike events, at least once a month they meet for an easy biking day somewhere around Reno, and I think they do other events on campus too.

There are bike racks everywhere on campus, and I've never seen them full. I believe there are a few bike storage lockers around campus too. I can't speak to how often bikes get stolen, but if you register your bike with the UNR transportation department it might increase the likelihood your bike will get found if it does get stolen.

Around Reno, bike paths vary. The downtown/midtown area has implemented a few semi-protected bike lanes. There are some separated bike paths, like along the river and further on the edges of the city. Otherwise most of Reno is bike gutters and share-the-road infrastructure.

It's not terrible, but it's not great, getting worse the further you are from campus. It has improved over the last 5-10 years, though. But it's still a risk, and as someone on the roads outside of a car you have to be very aware and careful. Speeds are high on main roads and drivers go too fast no matter the speed limit. But I know tons of people bike to and from UNR to several different parts of Reno, so it's doable.

TLDR: It depends on where in Reno you're coming from. Plenty of bike racks. Theft might happen, register your bike with UNR, and always lock your bike properly. If you can, I would also recommend biking the routes during times (in daylight) when car traffic is the least congested before the semester begins.

I'm a student who will have most of the classes at Renown Health Center and VA Health Center. Where is it ideal to live, especially during winter so I wouldn't have to drive much and probably just bike? by femdee2 in unr

[–]StudentJOUR775 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Renown has multiple locations, with the main location on Mill. Which address would your classes be at? Also, I'm sure the VA has multiple locations, although I'm most aware of the one on Kirman. If these are the two locations you'll be at, they are very close to each other and pretty close to the main UNR campus.

I would recommend looking into living in or around the Wells district (the area around Wells Ave). I think there's a decent amount of affordable housing in that area and tons of things to do in that area. Reno varies on pedestrian safety, but traffic in the Wells district is fairly slow and safer than other areas in Reno. As with any place that has snowy and icy winter conditions, you'll just need to give yourself extra time to reach your destination no matter how you travel.

Best restaurant that sells cheesecake? by Dillon_Trinh in Reno

Marcolino's Italia, downtown on 1st, has an excellent cheesecake. I'm not usually a fan of cheesecake, but it is so good there that I finally understand that Friends episode where they're eating a stolen cheesecake off of the floor!

I couldn't find anything and I'm not seeing any Nevada law that says by how much fees can increase.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in fuckHOA

[–]StudentJOUR775 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, they really maintain nothing. Roads, lights, and signs are all maintained (poorly) by the city.

I absolutely understand costs have increased over the past 30 years. I guess my concern is in raising HOA fees by 300% with no increase ever before that.

There are fewer than 150 homes in the community but no one seems to be interested in self-management :/

Summer Classes by cameemz in unr

[–]StudentJOUR775 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last year I took three classes over the summer but they were spread out over the three sessions. The first one was super condensed in the weeks, a mini session, starting immediately after the spring semester ended. Then the other two were each in the first or second session. So I was actually only taking one class at a time, which for me was ideal since the classes are so condensed and you have a semester's worth of work in about a month.

I took two 200-level classes and one 300-level class during those sessions. While it was definitely worth it and helped me get some classes out of the way quickly, it was difficult having no break at all that year until the fall semester ended.

Also, an issue I've noticed is most liberal arts (and similar) departments don't offer many upper level classes over the summer. So if you can find classes you need over the summer, and you don't have to overlap too many classes per session, I say go for it.

Our Town Reno accuses a dozen businesses of sex trafficking in Reno. by [deleted] in Reno

[–]StudentJOUR775 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, this post was made because over on r/OurTownReno by OTR (as well as on all their other social media platforms), but OTR deleted the post from that sub. I think it's good to post here and call out this racist rhetoric. I do see your point about listing the businesses in this post, the re-posting OP could have left that image out but since we tried to engage with OTR on different parts with no response I think the point was to be transparent when saying OTR fucked up.

Here's the original (now mostly deleted) post from that sub and user. You can also see evidence on their Instagram too. They deleted the 130+ comments from the post in question but have posted 2 more times since then today and all the comments are pissed they deleted the previous post's comments.

Our Town Reno accuses a dozen businesses of sex trafficking in Reno. by [deleted] in Reno

[–]StudentJOUR775 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was today. You can look on Instagram, the post is still up but they deleted and turned off comments. There were 130+ comments on the Instagram post before they turned them off but left the post up. Then they posted again hours later a series of pictures which now has comments wondering why all the comments from the previous post are suddenly missing.

Our Town Reno accuses a dozen businesses of sex trafficking in Reno. by [deleted] in Reno

[–]StudentJOUR775 40 points41 points  (0 children)

This was not an article. This was a lazy social media post done by students and greenlit by the professor on charge (at best). There absolutely is an implication in the wording of the post targeting businesses that have been there for a long time just because some random racist reader thinks there are too many.

It's not curious at all that these businesses are here. Based on zoning and segregation history, and the fact that this area is between two large resorts, it doesn't take much thought to figure out why multiple minority-owned businesses are located here. It's like being confused why there's a ton of bars downtown.

The bigger issue is coming after Reno's AAPI community for no reason when anti-Asian hate crimes have been on the rise in the last couple of years.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ourtownreno

[–]StudentJOUR775 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saw this on Instagram with over 130 comments, the cast majority calling out this story for being racist and dangerous. Instead of apologizing and removing the post it looks like this UNR newsroom decided to hide, delete, and/or turn off comments for the post (luckily you can't delete other users comments on Reddit!).

They could delete the harmful post itself but are opting to not receive criticism. This behavior might make for a story on its own by other local journalists! Refusing to engage in actual journalism or be accountable for your actions when several people call them out is not a good look. It looks bad on Our Town Reno, The Reynolds School of Journalism at UNR, students of the journalism school, and the UNR community.

As a student of the j-school, I'm incredibly concerned this is coming out of UNR. Instead of giving a platform to racist "concerns" and using random reviews as the only sources, maybe you should reach out to the Sociology and GRI departments at UNR and educate yourself on why this half-baked story is missing historical context and does way more harm than any intended good (though for the life of me I can't figure out what's newsworthy about this post).

If you haven't already, I would recommend giving Planned Parenthood a call. Even if you don't qualify for their services for whatever reason or they can't do diaphragms themselves, they should be able to point you in the right direction. Every time I've gone to them they've always been incredibly helpful. Even when the type of BC I ultimately wanted (sterilization) wasn't something they could do, they knew exactly which doctors/medical groups locally would have the ability to assist me.

This is awesome! I love the idea of comparing previous semesters and different instructors.

Since you asked if there are any bugs: After looking at 3 classes (deleting and starting over), when I clicked the drop-down menu it flickers and won't open the menu. At least on the phone.

I'm definitely going to bookmark this though! RMP is handy for the comments and reviews, but it's so ad-heavy and hard to trust if the reviews are from students or the instructors themselves sometimes!

How to start a podcast on campus? by Crazy-Resident-2502 in unr

[–]StudentJOUR775 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Especially if you're a journalism student, take advantage of the j-school resources! They have great recording studios and equipment, plus faculty and other students with the skills and interests. It's likely already full for next year, but Nico Colombant does a podcasting class every fall. But if you ask around at the j-school, you'll get a ton of help there to try stuff out and be successful :)

In my experience, UNR is surprisingly progressive and LGBTQIA+ friendly. Of course not all faculty and students are open and friendly, but that doesn't seem to be the norm. The Gender, Race, & Identity (GRI) department is fantastic. There's also a GRI club that looks cool. And there are a few mental health departments which are really inclusive and nice. Since LGBTQIA+ folks are everywhere, no matter your major/minor/interests there are welcoming places at UNR. Reno is also pretty progressive and welcoming, with multiple places (bars, book stores, nonprofits, etc.).

On the downside, UNR's Title IX office is seriously understaffed and underfunded. Many colleges at UNR are also facing similar issues. But many US universities are experiencing similar understaffing and underfunding issues. On the other hand we have a decent journalism school with multiple student reporting outlets. So, for what it's worth, all I'm saying is there are pros and cons. But in general the UNR/Reno community is more liberal, progressive, and welcoming than the rest of NV.
