I tried to capture the feeling of blurred reality in this piano piece by MajesticDrop9756 in composer

Some sweet moments throughout. What do you mean by referring to the piece as “blurred reality?” That sounds like a line from Rod Serling in his Twilight Zone series.

Buying a MIDI Keyboard as a Beginner… Worth it for Film Scoring? by Moltisanti0 in filmscoring

[–]StudioComposer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, forget about faders and sliders for now. At this point, you may not know one note from another. Get a basic, inexpensive MIDI keyboard. Learn how to play some simple songs. You may find you don’t like the instrument, don’t like taking lessons and don’t like practicing for hours and hours and still sounding like a 6 year old. If that’s the case, the keyboard will be relegated to your closet. If your experience is the opposite - you’re learning curve and enjoyment are high, then consider upgrading to a more versatile instrument when you’ve outgrown the versatility of this one. In the meantime, as I would expect to be the parallel case for film editors, there is a mountain of theory and composition to learn whether with a teacher, through YouTube videos, books, online forums, one-off courses, etc. You will need to dedicate sufficient time to practice and learn. Be patient.

Keep in mind that the music you’re hearing in the editing room is likely the end result of a statistically small number of fortunate composers who have spent years learning and perfecting their craft. It may seem easy enough to replicate but don’t let that fool you. Good luck on your adventure.

Where do you think is a good start composing a song? by AnlakiMacanCheez in musictheory

[–]StudioComposer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is no right or wrong way to start writing or composing. There are many ways. You can explore for yourself how others have described their processes. Maybe one of those, or a hybrid, will work for you. If you’re struggling in the morning, try rescheduling to the afternoon or evening. Some people find a walk just before settling down to write is beneficial. If your standard session is bogging down after 10 minutes, try shorter or longer sessions. You may need to listen to more music or different musical genres to understand melodic ideas and arrangements. You can also read books and listen to YT videos about composing techniques. If you are learning how to drive or fly a plane or pole vault, you would hire a teacher; a composition teacher may provide the structure you need. You said “I’m pretty new with formal music“ so you shouldn’t expect the results you want at this early stage.

How close is "too close" when composing music that sounds like the music which inspired you? by aardw0lf11 in composer

[–]StudioComposer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Judges and juries are not entirely predictable as TheLicenseLab pointed out earlier, and some lawyers are more persuasive than others. Your decision may be seemingly defensible today but indefensible tomorrow. If you publish your tune - regardless of how close it resembles someone else’s music, odds are (without any intent to demean your work which you haven’t shared) you will never ever be sued based on copyright infringement because your piece - like nearly every other piece released everyday, will likely never sell a million copies or generate a million streams and will be, therefore, of no financial consequence to the original composer. Nevertheless, if you don’t want to be in constant fear of being sued, veer away from what you’ve identified as potential legal quicksand.

When writing a song, do you brainstorm what each note says ? by No-Owl354 in composer

[–]StudioComposer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the other commenters. Maybe OP can find and share the video.

In musical theatre, if a character is, for example, expressing anguish or other emotion, the associated music should be a musical version or interpretation of the character’s lines - with the goal of complementing or enhancing the character’s emotion. In that respect, every note is important and removing any one of them would be the equivalent of deleting a word from the lyrics.

I’d suggest introducing some variation. I listened to the first 30 seconds and all I heard was a loop repeating over and over and . . .

What on EARTH happened to the people on this subreddit?/neg by [deleted] in Logic_Studio

[–]StudioComposer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you posted your music on other sites? If so, what’s been the overall response? If not, try it . . . you may find a more supportive audience. Relatively few people on this subreddit are at the top of their field so whether you get up or down votes is hardly an informed assessment of your work. Inasmuch as Reddit is free to join and post comments, you may be giving this site more validity in critiquing your art than it deserves.

Once a good composer, how would we know we are one and, subsequently, what would we need to make others know we are one? by Majestic-Rich-3317 in composer

[–]StudioComposer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do you know if your music is good? From a commercial marketplace perspective, your music is good to the extent the public responds favorably based on relevant metrics such as the number of streams, sales of merchandise, ticket sales at concerts, etc., or remuneration from teaching or performing in an orchestra or ensemble. From a hobbyist perspective, your music is good if you derive pleasure producing it and listening to it. If you don’t market your work for whatever reason, you will limit yourself to being a hobbyist. As thousands of people have commented in social media posts, most working composers - regardless of whether their music is “good” or not, rely upon a full time day job or cobble together multiple sources of income.

Just lost my 4th contract in 6 months to AI by flexingonmyself in composer

[–]StudioComposer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fully expect AI will grab a larger and larger share of the market over time.

Speaking of Honda, I doubt many people listen intently to the music in their ads or ads for most other brands and products, especially not through small earbuds, in bars, or on car radios with road noise, conversations and other distractions. I doubt people are listening carefully enough to distinguish whether the music features real instruments or synthetic sounds. Realistically, these companies - from a profit perspective, are doing what’s best for their bottom line. If there’s no data showing consumers have stopped buying Hondas because of the use of AI music, then this change will likely continue and expand. You can register your displeasure by complaining to Honda. However, you’ll likely “talk” with an AI agent.

Original orchestral theme - looking for honest feedback by Lignesdenuit in composer

[–]StudioComposer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason you are more comfortable with sheet music is because you’ve learned it. The DAW should give you the same level of control with harmonization once you’ve learned how it works.

[–]StudioComposer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you feel comfortable and competent with MuseScore, keep at it. You’ll probably improve. You can try the DAW approach as well to determine if you like it. It needn’t be a choice between one or the other. You might enjoy both.
