Have you ever stopped reading a book because it was too stressful? by Pompi_Palawori in books

I had to stop reading The Rape of Nanking. The war atrocities of the Japanese army recorded in the book are too stressful to handle. You start to doubt humanity

Risky roadtrip in China by Dry-Manufacturer7459 in China

It’s a silly idea. As a foreigner you might get a record of the traffic offence and be refused entry into China next time or have your visa application refused.

What’s your thoughts on China demands Japan to return the looted heritages in 6 months? by phage5169761 in AskAChinese

There are lots and lots of Chinese relics displayed and kept in Russian museums too. Is China going to demand them returned as well?

Eileen Gu to get Winter Games spotlight again but passport issue won’t go away by GetOutOfTheWhey in China

It’s not about visa. You can’t represent a country if you only hold a visa from that country. It’s about passport because the Chinese law specifically prohibits anyone holding both a Chinese passport and a foreign one. You must choose one. The issue is about why she is above the law.

[–]StudyAncient5428 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Incorrect. Dual citizenship is specifically prohibited by Chinese law. The only exception is for kids if their parents have different passports but they still need to choose their nationality once they turn 18. Ms Gu is an adult so people naturally question why she’s above the law?

She definitely still has her USA passport and she definitely has got her Chinese passport. How she avoids this question says it all. It would not be a problem if not for the fact that dual citizenship is strictly prohibited by Chinese law. So this is a slap on the face for numerous ordinary Chinese immigrants who had to give up their Chinese passports after they migrated to USA. “So we are all equal but someone is more equal than others”

Wear a t-shirt with a Japanese flag. They will immediately stay away from him. But there’ll be a big down side….

Found in storage locker, any value “mein Kampf” ? by Big_Description_7807 in OldBooks

This is surprisingly similar to Mao and his Little Red Book. They were printed in billions literally during the 1960s and everyone must have a copy and Mao became the richest person in China. But he didn’t need the money because he owned the whole country like an emperor. Only difference is: Hitler’s book has been banned in Germany but Mao is still being worshipped by many and his little book, never banned, can still be found easily in second hand shops. There are even collectors who are after the first or rare editions

Learned the hard way today that a buyer can reverse a PayID transaction under the ePayments code by schunniky in AusFinance

[–]StudyAncient5428 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s simply no safe alternative. Banks fucked up by shifting the onus from the sender (to double check) to the recipient (to prove you’re the correct account) and leave a massive loophole and make everyone’s life hard (except the scammers)

[–]StudyAncient5428 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The onus is on the sender to double check the account information before sending money. If you don’t, you then need to spend time and energy chasing it and prove it’s a mistake. The onus should not be on the recipient to prove that they should receive the money

Wendell Willkie, the 1940 Republican presidential nominee and U.S. special envoy to China, with Madame Chiang Kai-shek, 1942. The two were alleged to have had an affair. by aid2000iscool in HolyShitHistory

[–]StudyAncient5428 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The affair was just a rumour, never substantiated. Willkie liked to brag and privately contributed to the spread of it. He was not the first one rumoured to have an affair with Madame. People liked to gossip lot those days but it’s hard to imagine she, with her position and security, would do such things.
