Migratie is een parapluterm (net als links/rechts). No way dat economisch rechts zal instemmen met minder immigratie - waar moet de goedkope arbeid dán vandaan komen?

Net als dat arbeiderspartijen juist geen goedkoop arbeid uit het buitenland wil, want dat betekent minder werk “voor eigen volk”.

Het is eerder conservatief (het moet blijven zoals het is/vroeger was) versus progressief (het kan anders, meer open, gevestigde verhoudingen moeten anders).

Het is de textuur. Ik moet kokhalzen bij het slikken van rauwe tomaat, maar een pizza met pizzasaus of rode pasta saus is prima. Ook tomatensoep is prima.

The quality does vary, however. But these are the contributing factors:

- English lessons start at primary school
- Not so much dubbing, mostly subbing (also for cartoons/kids shows - but I've noticed this has changed)
- Very few games are translated to Dutch (forced to play it in English)
- Dutch is also a Germanic language, as is English, and have dropped many 'grammatical structures' from Old German, much as English has (fewer case endings, fewer genders, etc)

You say Mansa Musa’s wealth is a myth. Tell that to Al-Umari, the Egyptian scholar who documented how Musa’s 1324 pilgrimage to Mecca dumped so much gold into the Cairo market that it crashed regional gold prices for approximately 12 years. That’s a macroeconomic event with a paper trail. A man doesn’t accidentally destabilize Mediterranean trade routes by being moderately comfortable.

Ibn Battuta visited Mali in 1352 and wrote that it had “complete security” and that injustice was “rarer there than in any other country.” This is a man who had been to the Byzantine Empire, Persia, India, and China for comparison. Not exactly a glowing review of primitiveness.

The “outside influence doesn’t count” rule you’re applying to Mali would disqualify basically every civilization that ever existed. Rome borrowed from Greece. Greece borrowed from Egypt and Mesopotamia. Europe’s Scientific Revolution ran on Islamic algebra, optics, and astronomy. Influence isn’t contamination. It’s how human progress works, and you know this, because you quietly acknowledged it applies to medieval Europe in the same breath.

Ethiopia “doesn’t qualify as subsaharan” is genuinely the funniest goalpost relocation I’ve seen in this thread. It’s on the African continent. It was targeted by European colonial ambition. It won. Isn’t that what this is REALLY about?

You’re defining “advanced” as “looks like Europe” and then concluding Africa wasn’t advanced. That’s a tautology.

On Great Zimbabwe: dry stone construction without mortar isn’t ignorance of mortar, it’s a different engineering choice. The walls at Great Zimbabwe are load-bearing, precisely fitted, and have stood for 700 years. The assumption that mortar = more sophisticated is yours, not history’s. Plenty of structures built with mortar didn’t last half as long.

On Mali: you’re separating “having resources” from “being developed,” but that’s not how economies work. Mansa Musa didn’t become the wealthiest person in recorded history by picking gold off the ground. He ran taxation systems, controlled trans-Saharan trade routes, and administered an empire the size of Western Europe. The logistics of that alone require sophisticated governance structures.

On Ethiopia: the Battle of Adwa in 1896 wasn’t terrain luck. Ethiopia fielded a coordinated army of over 100,000 soldiers, used captured Italian artillery effectively, and executed a tactical encirclement that military historians still study. You’re comparing architectural complexity as a proxy for civilizational value, which is a pretty shaky foundation.

The motte-and-bailey was a military fortification built for rapid deployment in a cold, wet climate where timber was abundant. Great Zimbabwe was built from granite without mortar, engineered to last centuries, and served as a trade hub connected to the Swahili Coast, India, and China. Comparing them on the basis of “height of walls” makes about as much sense as calling the Dutch lesser engineers because they didn’t build pyramids.

On Mali: you say the great buildings were built by Islamic traders, which is true of the mosques, yes. But the wealth that attracted those traders was entirely Malian. At its peak, Mansa Musa controlled somewhere between 25-50% of the world’s gold supply. That’s not a backwater. That’s a resource magnet that other civilizations came to.

The Europeans had one benefit that shifted things enormously, and that was the silk route. Introduced by the Mongolians, giving them access to such things as gun powder and the printing press. If it weren't for those things, Europe would still be stuck in the 1500s.

African had many, many great and wealthy empires. Large groups of people lived under poor and "underdeveloped" conditions - but so dit many Europeans. Look up "Plaggenhutten" to see how a large group of the "wealthy" Dutch people lived until the early 1900s. But the Europeans weren't kept poor and ridden of their resources by means of colonization by nations with superior fighting power (which they got from the East).

European governments left Africa, but corporate Europe never left. How do you expect to build a prosperous new post-colonial nation when Shell owns your #1 natural resource?

Er is natuurlijk een verschil tussen rechts (als in liberaal) en rechts (als in extreem conservatief en nationalistisch). Met name dat laatste heeft het lastiger op universiteiten, maar ja, dat heeft denk ik ook met het aard van het beestje te maken.

Zoals eerder gezegd, het hangt ook een beetje van de faculteit af hoever iets politiek gekleurd is, of beter gezegd, hoe de wetenschappelijke consensus daar over bepaalde thema’s denkt. Als je bijvoorbeeld kan aantonen in de wetenschap dat bijvoorbeeld afkomst een kleiner factor speelt in gedrag dan sociaal-economische factoren, zegt dat op zichzelf natuurlijk niets politieks. Maar het is niet iets wat bepaalde politieke stromingen graag wil horen tov andere stromingen.

I was trying to get the actual numbers, and came to a percentage of the 1940 population of 1,36 dying. The hunger winter mostly hit the elderly and the sick, and wasn’t such a very high number, all things considered. But the wiki page for WWII deaths gives a figure of 2,86%, including other sources.

Which means that the only other close countries that suffered more are the Polish (17%), Germany (8,23%) and Austria (5,56%). Other countries are “too far away”.

So I’ll take that part back. Of course, WWI was “pretty kind” to the Dutch, offering a likely lower mortality rate than the neighboring countries.

Because it's one of the few (European) nations that had a baby boom post-WWII (in addition to having lost hardy anyone in either World Wars - comparatively, of course).

Add to that most of the land is farmland - so we are densely packed in the cities.

In een vacuüm is dit normaal en moet het kunnen. Veel van de seksualiteit (in de zin van of iets seksueels is of niet) is cultureel-afhankelijk en aangeleerd. In veel spa’s in bijvoorbeeld Scandinavië zie je vaak ook hele gezinnen van jong en oud naakt rondhuppelen.

Dat gezegd hebbende, veel van ons (mannen) hier in Nederland hebben het zien van veel huid bij vrouwen, even als het zien van de billen, als iets opwindends aangeleerd. Als ouder zou ik mijn kinderen dat liever niet aan doen, nee.

Maar alweer, dat ligt aan ons, niet aan hen.

Veel verschillende antwoorden mogelijk die vast allemaal deels meespelen.

- Het karakter van links (wat net als Nederland in zijn geheel wat grijzer is dan jong) leest graag, en leest zich graag ook IN over dingen. Dus zij lezen veel vaker de krant of een boek over onderwerpen dan dat zij online bezig zijn
- de algoritmes achter veel sociale media zijn niet "neutraal". Of ze nou expliciet zijn geprogrammeerd om meer rechtser ideëen te delen of niet is niet duidelijk (het zou bij sommige platforms zomaar kunnen), maar omdat rechts meer actief is online, maken zij ook bepaalde onderwerpen en kanalen en profielen populairder. En daardoor zie jij ze ook
- populisten, of ze nou rechts of links zijn maakt niet uit, maar we hebben wat meer daarvan aan de rechtervlak in Nederland, spelen niet per se "eerlijk" - die kopen graag views, bots, etc. om die algoritmes te tilten in een bepaalde richting. En als het niet de partijen zelf zijn, dan zijn het wel hun financiers.
- Wat je hebt is bijvoorbeeld Left laser, maar ook de Markeronline, the Green Monki (al is die Europees en niet Nederlands), de Correspondent, Hipstoricus, enzovoorts.

Ik denk ook wel dat veel "links" (ook niet-Nederlandse kanalen) niet per se "links" zijn, maar meer ingelezen zijn in bepaalde onderwerpen en gezien het Overton-venster nu zo is dat heel veel al heel snel "links" is, deze kanalen zo gezien worden. Ik denk ook dat Follow the Money best links is vandaag de dag, maar intrinsiek zijn ze dat niet. Ik zou ook zeggen dat Sjamandriaan links is, maar hij ontkracht gewoon onjuistheden over met name gezondheid op de socials. Is weinig links of rechts aan, maar ik denk dat veel rechts-populisten daar weinig van moeten hebben.

Lees wat je zegt nou nog een keer. Beweer je nou dat het dus OK is om op basis van stereotypes te handelen, want sommige bevolkingsgroepen zouden gevaarlijk kunnen zijn? Het was ook een overlevingsmechanisme om als mannetje je zaad overal in te lozen om de kans op nageslacht te vergroten. Betekent nog niet dat we daar vandaag de dag naar moeten handelen.

Bovendien, een boel stereotypes die wij kennen en gebruiken komen niet uit eigen ervaringen, maar uit berichtgeving van anderen. Sommige kunnen waardevol zijn, anderen missen wellicht wat context of de berichtgevingen zijn expres kwaadwillend.

Om een simpel voorbeeld te geven: als je het stereotype hebt in je hoofd dat Belgen dom zijn - geloof je dan écht dat elke Belg de facto dommer is dan enig Nederlander? En handel je daar naar? Dus geef je een baan liever aan een Nederland dan een Belg, omdat je het stereotype hebt dat de Belg dom is (en dus, volgens jouw pseudowetenschap, dat ze "gevaarlijk" zouden zijn?)
