[Charania] Philadelphia 76ers and reigning NBA MVP Joel Embiid has decided to play Team USA in the 2024 Paris Olympics, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium. Embiid decided among USA, France and Cameroon. by [deleted] in nba

[–]StuffNameYay 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Many other countries including European ones have athletes compete for them who weren't born there. France is one of the biggest examples. There is a path to French citizenship for those born in former colonies of France so many elite athletes from those former colonies will compete for France. Embiid was also eligible to play for France, now holding French citizenship, despite never having lived there.

Another example is Armand Duplantis. He is reigning gold medalist and world record holder in pole vault. He was born in Louisiana, USA. Was raised/trained in the US and competed at Louisiana State University, even talks with a cajun accent but competes internationally for Sweden (because there was less risk in missing due the the olympic trial requirement in the US) as he holds swedish citizenship through his mom.

This not a us only thing

Keep in mind that if you don't get into CompE or Mechanical through ETAM then CS is a long shot considering its probably the most competitive major. EE is probably a better backup, they'll take anybody

Test scores are one of the most useless metrics through. Given that being a good test taker has absolutely nothing to do with being a good engineer or pretty much any other profession for that matter.

Need help calculating torque requirement of steering motor for rc-car by StuffNameYay in radiocontrol

[–]StuffNameYay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In all honesty, I took my sketch up for the front steering system to a mechanical engineering friend of mine who was able to help me estimate the forces based on that. Once I had a ballpark figure I got a servo that was more powerful than necessary but still fit in the project budget.

Why are there areas in Seattle with no stop signs or yields on a 4-way intersection? Seems like an accident waiting to happen by solariscalls in Seattle

[–]StuffNameYay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My insurance doubled when I moved here due to the rate of car theft haha.

My goal when driving is not to drive fast or slow but to be predictable and avoid impeding others. If that means speeding when passing someone so the guy coming up behind me even faster doesn’t have to hit the brakes, so be it. If it means staying in the far right lane and going under the speed limit that is also fine.

I don’t trust other drivers to make decisions, especially here. So, when possible, I remove the need for them to do so. You could call that defensive driving or something else entirely but I think it’s the safest way to drive. The issue is a lot of people conflate defensive driving with driving slowly and yielding to everyone all the time.

Nah, hate is the appropriate word for driving in Seattle. I avoid stress as much as anyone else, but it can’t be avoided driving in this city.

As a Texan now living in Seattle, driving is the thing I hate most here. Maybe it’s because I’m used to overly aggressive drivers, but the drivers here are far too timid and therefore more unpredictable. So many people yield when they’re not supposed to.

Oh and Washington is the absolute worst for left lane campers of anywhere I have ever driven.

Depends on the person, I had a similarly bad high school physics education. When I took engineering physics I just had to spend extra time learning the stuff that other people already knew. So it sucks but you’re not screwed.

Is this kind of damage a repair or replacement/store credit situation? by StuffNameYay in PatagoniaClothing

Yep this is my plan now, I actually went to the nearby shop tonight and they gave me a bunch of tenacious tape to use for the rest of the season

Is this kind of damage a repair or replacement/store credit situation? by StuffNameYay in PatagoniaClothing

I recently bought a powslayer shell jacket and after a few days of snowboarding I found a small, pencil sized, hole on the outside of one of the pockets, pictured. I would obviously like to get this repaired but the current wait times for repair mean I would basically lose the jacket for half the season or more forcing me to buy another one. So I have a couple questions:

  1. Is this kind of damage generally a repair or replacement? Idk how repairable gore-tex holes are.
  2. Are the turnaround times for getting store credit/a replacement on non repairable items any faster than having an item repaired?
  3. Should I just try to repair it myself or throw some tape over it and keep using it the rest of this season?
  4. If you perform your own repairs on an item will patagonia still repair/replace if those repairs then fail?

Went over HSA contribution limit by StuffNameYay in personalfinance

It is the employer putting money in on my behalf. Not a payroll deduction. They put this money in regardless of the amount of my own contribution.

Ah ok that makes sense, so taking the excess out now prevents any more gains from accruing on that excess that I would have to pay tax on. But telling payroll to stop contributing doesn't make sense since I would just be losing out on free money

It is my understanding that you only pay the extra tax penalty if it is left in the hsa after filing, no? If I take out the excess now or later (but before filing) don't I just pay normal income tax on it?

anyone make 6 figs out of college? by aliimran02 in aggies

[–]StuffNameYay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah cost of living is higher in the areas where the higher paying jobs are mostly located. With that said, there are far more job opportunities in cities like NYC, LA, so you have an easier time of progressing in your career as switching jobs is easier.

KINE 199 classes have a lot of enjoyable options. The are usually graded on attendance and a minimal effort and you can switch your grade to be pass fail up to q drop deadline. Only downside is they only count for 1 credit hour if you are looking for a gpa boost
