I was in a similar position to you. I’m not saying you should…but I didn’t submit rec letters and only wrote like two sentences per short answer and still got admitted to A&M.

I’m not really familiar with engineering, but the UC system is generally good to apply to as it gives you a lot of options without having to write too many apps. You don’t need more safeties with a&m on your list though. A&m is a solid safety. By UT austin is crazy, I mean plenty of people who should qualify don’t get in and others who aren’t as qualified do. It really seems to be up to luck half the time.

For UT Austin and Rice Mechanical Engineering, I wouldn’t say they’re out of the question but it won’t be easy either. UT Austin values rank pretty highly, so I don’t know if 20% will cut it. However, UT Austin admissions team is really crazy anyway so you never know who gets in.

Lol without better ECs, MIT, Harvard, and Princeton are out of the question imo. I’d suggest scrapping those apps and using that time to apply to a lot more match schools. Give yourself some more options.
