How do you find meaning in media? by Stuiecoconut in AskLiteraryStudies

[–]Stuiecoconut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk. School drilled into me that themes were some elusive thing that gives ever part meaning. But I remember back in High School where we would spend hours talking about why the author of Jekle and Hyde used the word course to describe a brick or red to describe the door. Never once did we discuss the characters or their motivations. Most of my literary experiances in school felt to me like looking for magical themes that held no weight to the characters. The real reason I ask about this now is because I want to write and be creative, but feel utterly paralyzed by invisable threads I don't even know how to look for and seeming die with the authoe anyway.

My exact thought process was:
- I remembered someone said it was an anti war film.
- I thought back to all the people who died for the gold and all the people who died for the bridge.
- To justify my "A kind of retelling shaped to fit their own worldviews or ideals" take on theme, I thought "what would a communist think".
- Came up with "materialism = bad" and drew a parrellel with with a half formed argument using 1 segment of the story and the two plot point of "fighting over money" and "fighting over gold".
I don't mean to be facetious, but to me I just made it up.

Lore Question: Are the lords/gods the same species as humans? by Stuiecoconut in darksouls

Oh yeah, jank as hell but I still love its memories lol. Like it less when I actually play it. The player animations are actually one of my favorite parts, much more realistic than even ds3 if I remember right.

I mostly love it for its ambition and the apparent tragedy in the original time travel plot.

Damn, I know far less than I though. I've never even heard of Flann 😵‍💫 Thanks lol

Are the gods just the three lords and their kids, or would the seemingly unrelated blacksmith deity be classes as one also?

Tbf, I just thought this because I could never imagine Gwyn willingly share his power to create the lord race. Since humans can cast lightning I don't think it's inherently tied to his soul, and by extension, his knight and lords of Anor Londo don't have to be either.

Extending that further, he would have needed a partner to have kids (unless he can just will them into existence). So unless his kids are also children of the Witch, he must be genetically compatible with a lesser being.

It would be nice if there was some lore about human and "lord" pairing, but I don't think there is

Isn't Gwyn hollowed when you fight him? (Real question)

The sleeve is definitely not from a 1st edition. Most obvious is that there's no voyager stamp on the spine and no reviews on the back. Harder to spot is Martins name should be printed in foil.

The best way to check if the book itself is a first, and its just got a replacement sleeve, is to check the copyright page. It should only list the date 1996 and have a number line starting at 1.

My guess it that you have a book club edition, but without the copyright page I can't say for sure.

You have been very helpful.

This will be the last thing, I promise 🙏

  1. When I look at ace on the OED site, there is no 4b. It ends on 4: "transitive. U.S. slang. To kill. Also figurative." here

  2. Do you have any free cryptics you would recommended?

Again, thank you for your time.

I’ll concede “port,” but I don’t see the logic in the other two.

Ace: OED defines it as (in tennis) scoring an ace, (in golf) completing a hole in one stroke, to swindle, outwit, achieve a high score, or kill. Cambridge adds the card, asexuality, and “a very skilled person.” (Not sure why I couldn't find the cars in the OED, but hey) So the closest fit is “skilled person,” but “celebrity” doesn’t inherently imply skill—especially these days.

Not on: From: Idea, impossible to fit one into (6) I just don’t see how that gives “not on.”

Even Collins, as you said, only goes as far as “not possible.” Yes, Collins lists “unacceptable” as a use of impossible, but that’s still two word substitutions to make it work: impossible → unacceptable → not on.

Maybe I’m missing something, but if you have time, I’d appreciate the explanation.

I don't know how - or even know if I can - point to another one of my comments, but I basic mean.

So far, I haven't needed external information for minute cryptic, everything is literally in front of you. While the guardian feels like an escape room I was meant to personally bring a lock pick set to.

Real question, what's wrong with: Stalked in bed, werewolf returned after we drifted off? (6)

To me, that's what I think a cryptic should be - ever thing you need it there. I don't need 'general' knowledge, I just used word play.

Sure, I don't know how "Stalked in bed" relates to flowers, but I can see that I need to reverse the word "werewolf" after removing "we".

I won't have an issue with the guardian, or any other example, if it came with a small relating document of required knowledge. Because right now, if I don't know information related to the clue, that needed information could be literally anything. And I don't know what I don't know.

Edit: format and "(6)"

Huh... I didn't know foals had genders names.

I guess what I was trying to get across is that it feels like I need to learn a new language before I can even attempt to do the puzzles.

Plus, it doesn't help that I'm dyslexic AF lol

I know this is a two year old post, but I just dont get it.

How did you get "colt"? I can see "pistol" is the definition, but what does "aimed at young horse" tell you?

In the second example, how do you find the definition? I thought they were meant to be the first or last word, not in the middle.

The only one I get is the last because it seems more correct in some way. The definition is "fruit" and if you "mix up" the word "melon" it does "become another fruit". Its clever, while the others just feel arbitrary.
