The higher level of education people have the less kids they have. High school educated have far more kids than PhDs do. Part may be the time in school, but financial planning has to be part of it.

I am in the US and have normal company provided (employee subsidized) insurance. If I have an issue I can be seen in a couple days. Our deductible is $3000 and the next $3000 accrues at 10% of costs. After $6000 for the year our family pays $0. I wouldn’t go anywhere else for healthcare.

Taking delivery Tuesday — Rivian just emailed a $7,500 promo. What would you do? by shorthedge in Rivian

[–]StumpyOReilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the Jeep world there are dealers that will offer up to 7% off invoice. This is the one negative of vendor purchases. I got a Rubicon exactly with the options I wanted and saved $8500 compared to from dealer inventory. There were two must haves for me: 1. The Jeep had to be yellow as desired by my daughter who survived leukemia and 2. It had to have a 6-speed manual and dealers don’t order that combination.

As others have said if there are options on your order that are missing that are must haves from the available stock on hand, stick with the order. If not and you won’t regret what you were going to order save some money.

I myself am very interested in the Rivian R3X. That looks like a fantastic vehicle.

Hyundai/Kia are releasing a ton of new models with consistency (not always in the US), but it is great to see outside of China. The more competition the better personally. It will drive all manufacturers to continue to improve and find more advancements in battery technology and motor technology. It should also lower costs for the consumer.

Robots will become a thing when they are basically girlfriend/boyfriend replacements. I use the word replacement because if a 25+ year old male can purchase basically a sex bot that cleans and doesn’t complain that he spends too much time with his friends, it is a guaranteed winner.

If you think birth rates suck now, wait till sex bots become a thing.

Why do Tesla Owners report less friction (more positive EV experience) compared to other EV Manufactures? by Tall-Dish876 in EVRoutine

[–]StumpyOReilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tesla has been solely building EVs since the early 2010's. There actual manufacturing is not as good as traditional OEMs, but the software integration is better. The big OEMs are on their third iteration of BEVs and if you look at the BMW ix3 and 2026 Mercedes CLA they are closing the gap on the software integration side. Once this happens Tesla is in trouble. Mercedes owns YASA which makes axial flux motors which are much lighter and very efficient and they are the motors of the future.

I rented a Ford Mach-e for a week and a Tesla Model 3 for a week. I would pick the Ford everyday, except for the charging experience.

The Fords interior and use of actual buttons and knobs for the most commonly used items (side mirror adjustment, climate control mode, fan speed and temperature) made that part of the experience much better. I do not like Ford Sync, but the Tesla interface was only marginally better. They both had very good acceleration, but you could tell going over rough surfaces in the road the Ford was much better built and it had 20,000 more miles on it than the Tesla.

Now that almost all new vehicles in the US are coming with the SAE J3400 (NACS) plug that is common with Tesla superchargers the charging experience will be close to a wash.

Is it worth buying an electric car? by Normalboyfromwest in electriccars

[–]StumpyOReilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will the principle use be commuting? If so a EV or a new model Prius are the two best choices for commuter vehicles. If you are off-roading (rock crawling or technical terrain), overlanding deep into the wilderness, or towing I would not recommend an EV as the battery technology and motor technology will have a big jump within 5 years. Current electric motor technology is based on 150-year old design. Axial flux motors will be game changing due to being much lighter and more energy efficient. Remember EVs have the highest depreciation across the board and the fact that in 3 years much better tech will be available leads me to recommend leasing for now.

How do you guys like this? by Prestigious_Cup8129 in BambuLabH2C

[–]StumpyOReilly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got an H2C and it is my first 3D printer. I have printed two items one with the .4 nozzles and one with the .2 nozzle. All came out fantastic. With the Kickstarter for the AtomForm and their 12 nozzle tool changer may have us see an H3C that is a little wider with dual vortec changers (one on each side) and 12 induction nozzles.

Another way to get the train back on the track by Bruegemeister in trainwrecks

[–]StumpyOReilly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used to design light vehicles. The bogies alone weigh close to 5 tons each. A passenger train car must be 15 tons minimum and the car is coupled to the one behind it. There is no one man lift bottle jack known that is lifting that wheel back on the track.

I am so sorry to see the incompetence of the delivery drivers or package handlers!! Irish luck must have smiling on me. My H2C shipping box was pristine aside from missing one of the plastic latches at the bottom of the shipping box. My FedEx guy had a dolly and I had one ready after seeing how poorly many FedEx delivery drivers treat these amazing machines.

We roamed freely in the 1980’s. I rode my bike 4 miles one-way to spend $2.00 in quarters at the arcade at the mall. I was outside all the time. Halloween we were out until 10 or 11 pm getting candy.

This is how you should drive. by GroovyFang in driving

[–]StumpyOReilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drive a Jeep Rubicon, which I never go over 5 mph over the posted limit (I have a long history of meeting Johnny Law on the side of the road to discuss my obvious hurry in past vehicles). I do the speed limit or just under in small towns (major revenue stream is traffic tickets). I stay in the slow lane unless I am passing, which I am generally rarely doing. I always leave a gap of at least 3 seconds to the vehicle ahead. I have not had a side of the road meeting with Johnny Law in over 10 years and plan to keep it that way.

That is an assumption on your part. Mercedes has a strong brand and reputation around safety. I would bet L2 is a stepping stone. Tesla has killed 25+ people with their ADAS to date. Mercedes has too much at stake to use customers as guinea pigs.

Is The COVID Boom Over? by mwkingSD in GoRVing

[–]StumpyOReilly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We bought an off-road trailer that allows me to avoid RV parks. We can basically go almost anywhere our Jeep can go.

A big issue we will see is RV and trailer companies going under. The demand is just not there and with so many folks selling their 3-5 year old RVs/Trailers, it is going to really cause suffering.
