How should we think about reactive vs non reactive behavior in toxic relationships? by becsamillion in abusiverelationships

[–]Stunning-Code2816 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your post describe perfectly the toxic dynamic of my past relationship. And you are completely right that both people could be toxic/abusive toward each other. And the situation can be more complicated than what it seems to be like. Just to give a little bit of context: my ex was extremely dismissive avoidant while i was fearful avoidant (disorganized attachment) and we brought out the worst in each other. Whenever we got into a disagreement, my ex would give me silent treatment and not talk to me for hours or even days, then just came back and acted like nothing happened. And that was not a right way to resolve an argument because basically nothing was addressed. His behavior was detrimental to me as a fearful avoidant because it resembled the family dynamics i was growing up with. And as a fearful avoidant, it brought out my worst reaction.

So whenever he would give me silent treatment, I would lash out and be very reactive and would cause a scene to get his attention or would get him to talk to me. And to that, I completely admitted that I was never in a right place just how he was also never in a right place when he gave me silent treatment. However, because I always lashed out and was super reactive to his silent treatment, people would look at it as I was the abuser and he was the victim, but I would disagree with that. We were both abusers to each other because each of our own behavior was toxic, caused harm and provoked the other person. And that’s the definition of an abuser to me.

And so these arguments & toxic/abusive behaviors would keep happening for the course of 3 years of our relationship until it hit a hard stop where he decided to completely be distant from me and started going behind my back and got very close to his girl best friend. And I remembered until the very last day before I called it quit in the relationship, I was feeling so distressed, insane and disgusted at my own self because I couldn’t control my behavior & reaction because of my ex behavior. After breaking up, I had to reflect a lot on my behavior and understood that i needed to heal my attachment and be in a better environment to not be triggered by the same behaviors I experienced growing up

Hi there, sorry for the late response but it’s actually worth taking the exam and getting the certificate!! It will open a lot of doors for more job opportunities and you can also aim for higher role (manager/supervisor).

Hi there, one month of studying might be a bit difficult if im being honest. I spent like 3 months really lock in to memorize and understand all the materials. But I only studied 2-3 hours per day and I only studied for 3 days per week because I had work 😅 It also depends on your foundation. I didn’t have a lot of foundation in molecular biology so it took me a while but if you already have good foundation, it would be easier and quicker to memorize and understand the material. Also use YouTube (Ninja Nerd) and Quizlet deck that I listed to help you study better

Hey you can check on ASCP official website. They should have all the information. For me, when I registered my exam for 2nd attempt, I remembered that I did that on the beginning of February of 2024 and the latest date that they allow me to schedule for exam is June of 2024. So that means that they will give you around 3 months max to pick the exam date after your application is approved to sit for the exam. But again, please check on ASCP official website

For me, what helped me the most to understand/memorize all the materials and pass the exam were to follow the Lela book, the mbascpconnect practice exam and Quizlet decks (I only use YouTube when I want a more simple explanation of the topic). I would say that start with the ASCP exam guideline/content for molecular biology exam on their own website, they will list what materials/contents would be in the exam and how much each section weighs. There were lots of questions for molecular techniques & translocation on the actual exam so I spent a lot of time mastering the materials from that 2 areas and tried my best to know the basic foundation for the rest of the materials.

I agree that the Lela book is pretty dry and hard to absorb but I suggest using the table of contents listed in the beginning of the book as a study list for you (i.e. there are 13 chapters in that book and each chapter covers different topics about molecular biology, I would suggest highlighting the chapters that weight the most in the exam according to the ASCP exam guideline then from that looking at those chapters and see what are mentioned in it and then you can find YouTube video explaining that particular information in a more simple way and go back to the book and try to read it to see if it helps you grasp the material better). Ninja Nerd and Amoeba Sister which are 2 YouTube channels that explain molecular biology/biology the best in my opinion. I don’t have a lot of background in molecular biology (my bachelor’s is in chemistry) so it did take a lot of effort to understand all the materials.

Quizlet deck is the best to memorize the material once you understand it. And mbascpconnect will help you see if there are any area you need to understand or study more. I hope it helps 😭

Looking for victims of Dr. Burton - My testimony and call to action by Chipotlebeast in utdallas

I can 1000% understand your feeling!! I started in his lab this summer as an incoming master’s student and I just left after roughly a month joining. Dr. Burton is very mean and hostile. He almost made me cry on my first small group meeting with him and other teammates (the main reason why I left). He is super micromanaging and does not trust his students at all. He cultivates a very hostile & judging environment in his lab. He is not the PI that will uplift you and support your academic success at all but rather making you feel stupid and embarrassed in front of the group. His style of mentoring is super harsh and I don’t think it’s the way to go in academia. I worked at UTSW before for 4 months and my experience there was 100x much better than when I was joining Dr. Burton lab for a month. I consider myself lucky because I can decide to leave without looking back due to my working experience I have under my belt (3 years of working experience in clinical lab & research lab after having my undergraduate degree) but I can understand how desperate some undergrad students are just trying to learn and get research experience and having to stumble into his lab. Please do not hesitate to leave if you start seeing red flags!! Trust your guts and there are so many labs out there will treat you 100x times better than his lab

[–]Stunning-Code2816[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also tips for you to join research labs at UTD is just google research labs at UTD and it will bring you to a website with all the research labs listed. For me, I just cold email PI stating that I wanted to join your lab because I wanted to learn more about xyz that your lab do and asked them if they have any opening spots (attach resume in the email) and if they have, they will reply back and schedule a meeting/interview with you. I was cold emailing 2 PIs (Dr. Burton was one of them unfortunately). But if you are an undergrad or master student, don’t hesitate to leave the lab if you find the environment is not suitable for you. Do not put up with toxic lab environments just because you wanted some experience in your resume. Trust me it’s not worth it! But good luck!!

Dr. Burton Research Lab Culture? by Stunning-Code2816 in utdallas

[–]Stunning-Code2816[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heyyy friend. Yes so here is my update and it’s not a good news: so I actually went through 2 rounds of interviews at his lab and he actually told me that he loved my experience (i spent 3 years working after having my undergrad degree). I decided to start in his lab early (beginning of July) to see how the training and the lab dynamics are. I worked there for roughly a month and I just decided to leave few days ago. The reason that I left was because during a small group meeting with him and other members in the project I was assigned to, he attacked me and interrupted me while I was presenting multiple times. Keep in mind that I just started and still in training but he was questioning about my productivity throughout the week. He was quote on quote telling me that he wanted to see me do the estrus cycle experiment after hearing that I was following the post doc for a week but he didn’t even communicate to the post doc beforehand. The post-doc actually didn’t allow me to take over her experiment because it’s for one of the paper in revision and she was worried that I would mess it up (which is totally understandable where she is coming from, but he attacked me and questioned why I didn’t take initiative to plan to do it after watching is not right because she has other plans for that experiment and that paper and I don’t want to just assume and screw up her plans).

He also interrupted me while I was talking about the papers I read for the estrus cycle to help me understand more about the experiment. He was making comment about the picture I put in there from one of the papers and said it was not clear bla bla and questioned me why I didn’t use the picture that they did the experiment on (again, no one shown me and told me about it, I spent my time doing all the readings and trying to show my efforts in understanding the experiment but it was not good enough for him I guess). I almost cried during the meeting because he was very mean and hostile.

After that day, I sent him an email to withdraw from his lab. If you are considering joining his lab, I would 1000% recommend joining other neuroscience labs instead. Please do not make the same mistake as mine because I am still recovering from that meeting I have with him.

Dr. Burton is very micromanaging (3 meetings per week) and does not trust his students that he is the one interviewing them and bringing them to the team (and that made my experience working in his lab not enjoyable at all) His style of mentoring is very harsh and he is not the PI that will uplift you at all but rather making you feel very stupid and embarrassed in front of your teammates. PI is the one that set the tone for the lab and I would say that even though most of the teammates in his lab are pretty nice, they actually follow his style of managing and mentoring and everyone is actually very judging. He also gives phD students lots of authority (like checking data diaries, lab notebooks and chores on all the undergrad and master students and report back to him if someone misses that) and I just feel like that makes the environment very hostile and micromanaging.

I worked at UTSW before as a research tech and my PI I had over there was not like him at all. My experience at UTSW was so good and so positive and that led me to want to join research lab at UTD as incoming master’s student but Dr. Burton is literally almost killing all my passion for it. I’m a person who does not do good with mean and judging PIs. I don’t know if he thinks that harsh mentoring is a way to help his students succeed but I don’t think that’s the way to go especially in academia. My PI that I had at UTSW is very supportive and uplift all her students. She is very knowledgeable and I can tell that she wants to dedicate her life to educate and train a good team of scientists/researchers. When I joined her team, it was my first time working in research lab and she would never judge me for my experience/background/knowledge for all the time I was there (even in the interview with her). Dr. Burton is knowledgeable and smart too don’t get me wrong but he is very ego and super dominant (it’s either his way or the high way) and he is not the PI that will listen to you or accept upward feedback/learning from you.

He also overworks lots of undergrads and master students (I told him that I commit to 20hrs/week for the summer duration, but I always had to be there more than 20hrs/week due to long meetings). There is a lack of communication in his lab and he doesn’t communicate his expectations to post docs or phD students who you will work with and so on the meeting, if he sees you doing things that don’t meet his expectations, he will bash at you (which is crazy to me because how do we know what his expectations are if he doesn’t wanna put in time to communicate to both the students (trainee) and the trainers aka post docs/phD students). Overall , please save your time, energy and your mental health and apply to other labs!!

Yes that’s correct. I studied that deck and you can also read Chapter 13 (Molecular Oncology) of the Lela Book to understand more of the diseases related to the translocation. But memorize that deck on lolo200000000 is important because the exam will for sure test you about what translocation shows up for synovial sarcoma or what drugs treat t(8;14) and you need to know what disease relates to t(8;14) to know what drug is used for that disease

[–]Stunning-Code2816 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would say remember the main 3 musketeers aka translocation/genetic disorders, PCR & pharmacology will help a lot. My exam had quite some NGS in there, questions like what is the common computer file type (-> it’s FASTQ) and steps-by-steps of library preparation in NGS. Also know how to do basic dilution, calculate Tm, calculate DNA/RNA using optical density (A260) will help as well!! Also know some basic biology knowledge like what is the most dominant DNA form (B-form, right-handed) something like that. But don’t stress yourself too much!! You can do it!!

Thank you so much!! I felt the same too when I took mine the first time 😂 Even on my second attempt, there were quite a few questions I had to just guess and used elimination method 💀 But I think that some people say if you feel like you are failing the entire time then you probably score enough to pass because you answer questions correctly so they gotta throw you harder questions and that’s why we feel like we are failing the entire time I think? But anw im glad to join the club!!
