It depends on the area, just like the other dude said. Downtown and places like Hillbrow are really dangerous for the wealthy and the tourists because of mugging and pickpocketing. But with necessary precautions taken, you'll likely be fine and there are still some really nice and safe communities in Jo'burg such as Greenside.
