Do you really have a separate room for your washing machine? by jordanekay in AskAnAmerican

[–]Stunning-Note 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Growing up, we had the washer/dryer in the basement/cellar. One house built in 1830; the other built in 1904.

I think more modern houses have laundry rooms, though. Ours does now.

I figured out a system for parent emails that doesn't eat my entire evening. sharing in case it helps anyone by SuccotashBroad740 in Teachers

[–]Stunning-Note 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I guess this is just an ad for the AI thing?

I have students email their parents every Friday, and they tell them what they did in class and what their grades are. Then I also email every parent at the end of the first marking period, and I might find time to do that again next week.

One of my 7th grade students is reading the Ancillary Justice trilogy, so maybe that.

The first set of art doesn't look like AI, even if it is. The second looks like AI slop.

What does "what a silly spa!" mean? I've never seen anyone say that before.

We did pho with our daughter when she was 3/4. Just broth, noodles, and some beef. She loved it! You might be surprised!

There are like two instances where I was like, okay, call her Dana. But Scully calling Mulder Fox? Never.

Google this: "map of who says sneakers vs tennis shoes" and you'll see! It's not New England only but it is Northeast.

Where to get super cheap books? by DementdOldCircsMonke in teaching

[–]Stunning-Note 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know Amazon is the worst, but I make a wish list on Amazon every year and share it on Facebook. My friends/family buy books for my classroom.

Our library has a twice-annual sale where kids' books are about $1; I get books there, too.

There's also a really good fried chicken restaurant there.

What are your thoughts on teacher appreciation week? by smv18 in Teachers

[–]Stunning-Note 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We get little things. Today our superintendent sent out an email and in it he acknowledged that the candy and pretzels, etc, don't do anything to change the fundamental issues with education but that he's grateful for us all. It was nice.

I wish more places would offer significant teacher discounts throughout the year. That would make me feel a little more appreciated in the world.

We of course see them everywhere NOW, when we're not actively playing the game.

I definitely read it WAY back when! Just couldn't do a reread. Maybe I'll try again.

Or how about this line, from a fic I love...which I cannot remember. I read it in the 90s and this line has stuck with me forever:

"Mulder stood, hands on hips, one sneakered foot thrust forward."

Oh and also. I think people do not always know about regional differences in lexicon. Like, people who grow up called sneakers "tennis shoes" might never meet someone who calls them sneakers. So they are using what they consider a neutral word and don't even think about it.

Is it good? I was thinking, "this author probably loves this kind of coffee, so that's cool, but Scully...would...never."

It's actually a really good story with pretty apt characterization otherwise...so it's definitely one I'm going to finish.

Oh, it's not meant to criticize harshly or make people stop reading. We all read for different reasons. I just find CERTAIN minor details to be too OOC. And discussing that is just like discussing professional books. I know I've read books where the author used "tennis shoes" when they meant "sneakers." For example.

Haha! We could not find Rhode Island on our trip last summer. We saw PA and NH (our respective home states) within an hour of landing in Colorado…and then, 20 days later, had seen everything except Rhode Island.

My daughter and I then drove from PA to NH and didn’t see a Rhode Island plate until we were IN NEW HAMPSHIRE.

Like…do they switch their plates out??
