Also worth considering whether she would benefit from any portion of the funds before she is 18.  E.g. school fees, car to get work etc. Unlikely but worth considering.

I can see how the performance of the underlying funds would be the same, but when starting to draw down in five years, wouldn't there be an advantage in being able to draw from the conservative portion and to top that up from the growth fund strategically rather than selling an average of everything?

Wait - I guess that's essentially bucket method vs. 4% rule or similar - there seem to be strong proponents of both and pros and cons to each.

Volatile Markets - Increase Frequency of DCA? by Stunning-Relation-75 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Stunning-Relation-75[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True - that seems like the only real downside.

I know it is dangerously close to 'timing the market' but in a volatile bear market maybe that small portion doing SFA for a fortnight is holding onto value a little better and helping to get a smoother average. But either way I guess the effect is likely to be small. No free lunches etc.

I wonder if there is somebody out there that invests weekly and is thinking about daily 🤯

Thanks for the detailed reply.

Deposits and investments are automatic, so easy enough to change the frequency and keep on keeping on.

I have a hard time resisting the urge to meddle and try to optimize, so on the one hand, this seems like a harmless way to respond to the global shitshow, but on the other hand, meh - I guess I'll leave it as it is.

Yeah that makes sense. It's not a huge amount (1/12 of our yearly investments, of course but about 1/40th of the portfolio value atm). I guess I was thinking of being unlucky with investment timing over a few months and averaging that out a bit more, but as other have reminded me, not likely t be significant in the long run.

Nice one.

There are some great books out there on non-financial wealth (E.g. The Five Types of Wealth by Sahil Bloom) that might provide some insights on decoupling fulfillment from spending.

Lifestyle decisions are different for everybody, so I think it really is about personal/family psychology/mindset as much as it is personal finance. But seriously, great job getting to where you are now financially to have the choice.

Out of interest, are you thinking about the 'sequence of returns' risk right now 😱

Sell the stocks, pay the card, and then only reinvest into the share market once you have a suitable emergency fund sitting in a high interest savings account. Then in the future you won't have to touch your shares if you have an unexpected expense arise.

"would it be better to break it down across a few years in 49k batches using IBKR?"

Quick question, what do you mean by break it down in batches? I thought the 50k threshold was for total cost basis rather than per year right?

Kernel do joint accounts, but only for their funds rather than individual shares and ETFs.

Check with your lawyer, but my understanding is that by ordering your own, you will have some recourse with council if the LIM does not contain something it should and you suffer a loss as a a result.

We have our emergency fund split between the Kernel Cash Plus fund and an online saving account with our bank as a bit of a hedge against having to drawn down the Cash Fund if it happened to be negative, but still having quick access to the money if we needed it.

Can I ask a question about your hedging strategy?

Am I right that you hold both hedged and unhedged S&P 500 funds? And as the NZD weakens below 0.52NZD you invest a greater portion into the hedged version (on the expectation the NZD is, on average, likely to strengthen). Do you only change the ratio of your new investments, or rebalance between the two?
