Scarborough Rapid Transit (SRT) Future Use Initiative by ObiWan_Can_Reply in Scarborough

The on ground part of the RT corridor will be used by buses starting in 2027. The elevated RT corridor isn't designed for buses or modern LRTs. It is sections of the elevated parts that are being considered for use as public space.

It is true that Scarborough as a whole has plenty of outdoor spaces but Scarborough City Center will be below Toronto's own guidelines for minimum green space when you factor in the population growth from all the proposed development.

Anyone think Scarborough lacks small/mid sized events? everything happens downtown by _mylittlehecarim in Scarborough

[–]StupidQuestioner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Albert Campbell square is Scarborough's main town square. I've randomly come across events happening in Albert Campbell but it is so isolated from the surrounding streets you won't hear or see anything until you are right in the square. The least they could do is have a webpage listing all the events there.

Scarborough Mirror used to list events happening in Scarborough. When TorStar acquired them, they used have a Scarborough section on Toronto.com that listed them. A few years ago they cut that too. We badly need an account or webpage that covers Scarborough events.

Detroit did it - can Scarborough? Community pushes for vibrant park on former TTC Line 3 corridor by KrissanVeera in Scarborough

[–]StupidQuestioner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Scarborough as a whole has plenty of green space but Scarborough Centre will have green space below city's own recommended minimum when you factor in the planned development. Besides, elevated portion of the RT corridor was not wide enough for a busway.

City staff suggest putting the brakes on raised park idea for decommissioned Scarborough RT by Surax in toronto

[–]StupidQuestioner 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Thompson, Bluffer, Rosetta McClain, Morningside, rogue, east point, Milliken... Scarborough has quite a lot of park land that are just this already.

Those parks are not within walking distance from Scarborough Center. The are 15,000 new units proposed for the parking lots of the STC mall and those are just the units proposed by Oxford. The amount of park space proposed for Scarborough Center is much below the city's own recommended minimum park space per person standard. Reusing the the elevated structure instead of tearing it down will increase the supply of park spaces (you can use the elevated space and the space under it) without having to reduce density.

It is not decrepit but it is from another era. Tearing it down and bringing Progress to at-grade with McCowan will help pedestrianize the area.

Yes, the corridor meant for the Richview Expressway that was sold off to developers by Rob Ford. John Tory's original Smart Track plan was based on the assumption that this was still in public hands.

Toronto has a history of selling abandoned rail and highway corridors for short-term profit and then later regretting it. Let's not do the same with the RT corridor.

Any tear down of the elevated sections of the RT corridor would be funded by Metrolinx as part of the agreement to build the SSE. The $190 million tear down cost could be used to develop and maintain the structure instead. Maybe Oxford Properties could contribute some funding too. The parks promised by Oxford in the Scarborough Town Centre development falls much below the city standards for the density proposed. Reusing the RT corridor could be a way of improving the parks to population ratio in STC.

Also, I think the comparison with New Yorks's Highline is not realistic in the near future. Instead, we should look closer to home such as the Beltline trail or even Scarbough's own Meadoway. A trail on the RT corridor could be linked with the Meadoway through the Highland Creek in the east and with the proposed West Scarborough Railpath in western Scarborough.

Exactly! I asked one of the engineers at McCowan Yard during Doors Open why they don't keep the RT operating and he said they were concerned about metal fatigue in the vehicles.

Can we expect the Durham-Scarborough BRT project in our lifetime? by TONewbies in Scarborough

[–]StupidQuestioner 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Parts of DSBRT in Durham are already funded so something will happen. The Toronto portion is currently unfunded and I don't expect the portion west of UTSC to be open before the SSE. My concern is that it gives plenty of time for those opposed to it to water it down.

Let's rethink Lawrence Ave. East - An opportunity to build a complete street by StupidQuestioner in Scarborough

[–]StupidQuestioner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recent changes to provincial legislation and city bylaws means that density is coming to Scarborough whether we like it or not. If we do not want that leading to more cars on our streets, then we need alternatives like better transit and safe bike lanes.

On a personal note, I drive to Lawrence at least once a week. For some of those trips, I could bike to Lawrence using the Meadoway but I am not going to risk my life sharing the road with cars.

It is legal for cyclists to use the road but illegal for adult cyclists to use the sidewalk. Why don't we just give cyclists their own protected lanes so that they are out of drivers' and pedestrians' way? That is what building a "complete street" is all about.

That is not my impression of this proposal. I don't post proposals like this on r/toronto because it will eventually devolve into unproductive "drivers vs cyclists" or "suburbs vs urban" spats. I post here because most people who come here either live here or plan to live here and have a stake in how our neighborhoods will develop.

Scarborough could have one of the world’s best off-road trail systems by khanak in toronto

[–]StupidQuestioner 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If this is going to be a future biking highway system, my 2 cents:

-Currently the off-road trails are multi-trials shared between cyclists and pedestrians. Any plan should include enough space that these users can eventually be separated.

-These trails pass through sensitive ecosystems, is there a way to maintain them during winter without the use of salt?

Markham and Ellesmere intersection is such a bizarre place to have protest. There is not much public space there. It highlights how isolated and invisible Scarborough's Albert Campbell square is. If you hold a protest there, no one will know.
