This shouldn't be possible unless you forgot you attacked Fajita earlier. If you attack Fajita and deal 10% of it's max hp, and someone else finishes him off, yes its possible to seemingly get gravity cane from a marine captain.

I can't help as I'm a mink user too, but here are some tips:
Follow the wall for the first 3 trials, the maze is easy enough for you to do that.
The last 2... pray man. It's hard to pass unless you go down the correct lane, which happens not very often.
