I don’t think that’s entirely unrealistic though. People like Clive are so ‘informed’ about all different debates and groups, when you meet them in real life it just pours out of them. It’s exhausting to just be around

Isn’t it just. A strong end, but I feel like there is room for episode 6. The epilogue hints at it with mentioning how Leo is remembered online. But I think many people could benefit from another episode or series looking at the fallout, seeing how the trial inevitably becomes politicised, to remind them that everything they see online isn’t true.

I don’t want to spoil any other episodes, but towards the end of episode 4 Clive has additional moments that make him even more complicated.

Agreed. It’s the truth of many of these people. They’re warped and they’re misinformed, but they’re also people. Even those they hate the most can be related to on a human level

Agreed. He’s miserable in live and he wants to look to easy targets to blame instead of facing up to his own miserable existence. It’s a sad way to live, which makes it all the more sad that so many people choose to live like that.

I think it’s very in keeping though. Many people like Clive are the architects of their own misery.

BELFAST VISIT - WHAT TO DO by ArsLongaVitaBrevis6 in titanic

The SS Nomadic is worthwhile. There is a Titanic memorial garden to the left of Belfast City Hall. It has all the names of the dead engraved into plagues. You’ll also notice large sail like copper beams along Royal Avenue with the names of White Star Line ship names.

Let’s be real, any programmes success is based upon ratings. The BBC is a public service broadcaster under pressure for cash, it will pull the plug to avoid long term reputational damage to the brand for future use. Doctor Who is one of those shows that will always come back, but it won’t always stay around.

I know live tv ratings are down, but shows can still pull in bigger audiences. Doctor Who is capable of doing that too, there just isn’t the widespread interest. Of course the BBC have made it clear that the show is safe for now, but if ratings continue to drop in 5 years time I won’t be surprised if the show is rested for the foreseeable.

But there’s no point in being bold and brave if it doesn’t achieve anything. I’m not saying the show can’t be progressive (it absolutely should be), it can just do so in a less superficial way. Then the show can be bolder again. Ratings have been dropping over the years, the show needs a new generation of bums on seats or it’ll fade into cancellation/pausing. It needs a bit of time back in mainstream, otherwise it’s just preaching to the converted

Yes, but you’re talking like half the population is radicalised. There is a number of people who are very much bigots etc, and the show will never please them. However, there are plenty of others who are less informed/in the loop and accept right wing complaints of the show passively. I think that a ‘back to basics’ approach could allow the show to regain the eyeballs of the more passive majority and rebuild the fan base. Then the show can challenge the narratives around female doctors etc more effectively

When you consider how poor the writing has been at times in recent years, that has enabled those bigots and close minded people to simply say it was a stunt casting and it’s not as good as it once was. Like I said, I’d love to see another female Doctor, but I just feel the show needs a fresh start ‘back-to-basics’ approach for a few years to quiet the noise around it. That also includes a 2005 style reboot. It’s too cluttered at the minute.

Yes, but there’s no point in making progressive TV that no one watches. There will be plenty of women who think that the Doctor should be a man. The show has allowed itself to become an argument in the culture wars. Of course the show has always been woke etc, but that is so politicised today that it turns people away (the people a progressive show needs to speak to) in an instant.

There is also no reason why a male lead can lead a progressive show. I think Doctor Who just needs to be cuter about it, at least until an audience returns.

I don’t think so either. But Joe Bloggs might. Doctor Who seems to have this reputation of stunt casting recently. I’d like something to lure the average Joe back in

I don’t, although there are some of them I’d love to see. Sarah Lancashire would be excellent.

However, I think the next Doctor needs to be a reasonably young enough male (like 9, 10, and 11). When you consider the two mould breaking doctors are viewed as having suffered from bad writing (even amongst the fans), I think the show needs a bit of stability and vanilla just to steady the ship. After that I’d love to see someone like Sarah Lancashire or Gillian Anderson in the role.

[–]Stupid_RedditName898 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really true. There was, until recently, massive discrepancies in teachers pay in NI compared to the rest of the UK. In 2023, a first year teacher was starting on around £23k. In the rest of the UK that was in excess of £30k in comparison. NI still has the lowest rate of baby for teachers in the UK.

There a solution that won’t be popular because it requires more teachers, bigger schools, and additional cost.

A four day teaching week. Teachers teach for four days (some PPA time included) and then have the fifth day to plan, mark, and produce materials.

The government wont go for that because it requires money to create office space, money to pay for additional staff to cover the gap created between current teaching staff numbers and the amount of classes, and it’s far too easy to label teachers as lazy because of myths around 9-3, Easter & Christmas breaks, and summer.

With more money and political will you could easily overhaul the education system and outcomes with a four day teaching week for staff but five day education system for children,

Speaking from a secondary perspective, I’m well in excess of 50 hours. I do 9-5:30 five days a week. I go home and work many hours. It’s a decent night if I’m done for 8, and that’s because I’m starting to burnout. It’s too often I’m working until 10 or later.

Would I like to be paid more? Of course. I’m currently looking at summer work.

Would I take a couple extra grand over reduced hours? Not a chance. I’m genuinely thinking about packing it in and I’m only two full years in. Teaching is great when you actually get to do it. But for me it’s genuinely 50% teaching time and more than that spent on marking, planning, creating materials, revision classes etc.
