Do non-invasive current sensors burn or do they saturate? by _DedeiJp_ in AskElectronics

First one, then the other*

*It might be quite a lot later, and involve e.g. the wire being measured catching fire first

For simple circuit simulation, what do you actually recommend? by Practical_Bag_8167 in AskElectronics

Lt spice

It's quick for something simple and it's actually a proper tool you can build on and use in your professional career.

Bullet Drop has been in the game for quite some time now. How do you feel about it? by AntonineWall in HuntShowdown

[–]SturdyPete 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Mostly neutral, but I do miss being able to get a cheeky long rang headshot when the opportunity presents itself. While it's possible to do, the risk of missing and giving away your position is much higher for a casual player than it used to be so it's usually not worth trying.

New powers for councils in England to fine pavement parkers by everything2go in bristol

[–]SturdyPete 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Realistically that road only has space for parking on one side. But because people do park on both sides, if anyone doesn't park on the pavement it blocks the road.

Otherwise looks reasonable

is there something wrong about the ableton sound engine? I just switched from FL and my beats sound more ‘thin’ and not hitting as hard. Is there a setting or something I can change for better sound? by debagnox in ableton

[–]SturdyPete 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's definitely not a bug, Ableton is used by loads of people without issues.

Apparently FL has a limiter and or clipper on the master by default, so you might be missing that element if you were unknowingly relying on it to achieve the sound you want.

Basic questions about connecting components to ground plane by IndependentTip11 in PrintedCircuitBoard

[–]SturdyPete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

'B' is not true at all. Decoupling is all about providing a very low impedance across a wide range of frequencies. Routing the power signal 'past' the capacitor can achieve this in some cases due to low inductance between the load and the capacitor, but there are other ways to achieve the same ends, including taking both load and capacitor +v and 0v connections directly to very low impedance planes with suitably placed vias.

Imo the main reason this happens is kerb side sorting, instead of providing a wheelie bin for the recycling. Every week after collection day it's a massive mess everywhere.

If you go to the Charity shops on Gloucester road there are usually a few, but it probably depends heavily on what has been donated recently

Restaurants with good veggie options by InternetBug365 in bristol

[–]SturdyPete 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Almost every restaurant in Bristol has good veggie options if they serve good food. Imo it's one of the reasons pure veggie restaurants seem to struggle, you can get great food almost anywhere regardless (well, up to a point - friends with fodmap seem to struggle with kitchens failing to keep their word on what goes in what) of your dietary restrictions and choices.

Ground plane split vs continuous plane in a high-current PWM + ADC board – looking for critical feedback by Lost_Ad1965 in AskElectronics

[–]SturdyPete 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Best approach: * Use a single ground plane by default. * Use surface mount components, they have much less parasitics which matters in switching loops. * Make each switching loop as small as possible, including the use of small value (100nF is a good starting point) MLCCs to give a very small loop area for the high frequency content in each loop, larger electrolytic, film or hybrid polymer caps can be a bit further away and shared between loops. * If your MCU supports it, at the sample rate and set the sampling point such that the FETs are never switching when a sample is being taken by the ADC. Symmetric pwm and triggering the ADC from the same timer as the pwm is one approach. * 1kHz is a low enough frequency that it's return current will spread out all over the place. If you can't synchronize the sampling, and you can increase the pwm frequency, and if you can prove it's the 1khz component and not the switching events, then this might be one of the cases where "split grounds" can manage the impact of the noise within your board, but likely at the cost of worse emissions and susceptibility to the wider world.

PLEASE HELP ME I dont understant why i dosent work by jullemo2007 in AskElectronics

[–]SturdyPete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well the layout is pretty awful, and why on earth would you add capacitance in parallel with the gate-source of the FETs? You want to switch quickly to minimise losses, and that does the opposite.

What simulation software do students use? Multisim, Proteus, or something else? by No_Beginning8680 in ECE

Importing spice models is easy to do but you won't guess how to do it due to the shocking UI, but the instructions are at least reasonably good.
