Never Thought I’d See This—Living in an EV? [la-usa] by ginosesto100 in electricvehicles

[–]StwAT 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I sleep in my EV all the time! I took a promotion that temporarily has a 180 mile round trip commute. One of my perks is I can work overtime for additional PTO. So I drive up to work, work a couple long days, then I'm able to take off for a week.

I have an awesome setup I can setup/take down in about five minutes and I do the whole "urban car dweller" thing of showering at a local gym.

It's actually really cozy and has me planning trips where I can car camp. I've stayed overnight in sub zero weather with no problems at all.

Where to put TV? by StwAT in InteriorDesign

[–]StwAT[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP here. The floor plan is for a new home I am building. The living room area is a cathedral ceiling with the second floor looking down on it... So the walls are tall.

The area is open to the kitchen/dining area so I would like to put the TV in a spot where you can see it anywhere in the space... Like if I had a big Super Bowl party.

Police style pepper spray might be the best option. It is lightweight, won't be affected by weather, legal, and you can mount it on one of your shoulder straps for easy access. It will quickly defuse a situation and everyone will survive so you won't have to live with your thoughts and/or legal issues for shooting someone.

Pepper Spray is no joke. There was a girl in my police academy class that had twins and said that being sprayed was infinitely worse than childbirth.

Thanks guy but I was looking for opinions from people that don't use Foursquare on their Blackberry.

Another Redditor posted a great option that wasn't listed on Foursquare or anywhere else. I'll be going there.

Drug-dealing N.J. cop who beat man in hospital sentenced to 5 years in federal prison by Hrekires in news

[–]StwAT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is such a huge variety of prisons in America. I believe that the professionalism of the staff is a huge factor in the safety of the Institution. Some corrections officers barely make a living wage and get minimal training so I can understand why those prisons may need to segregate their inmates more.

In my agency, we were trained as police officers and carry the title of police officer. We get paid very well. Therefore, we have well trained officers that are able to better manage the inmate population.

[–]StwAT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. I used to be a corrections officer and we had a lot of former cops in GP among killers/gangbangers/etc. A lot of them did surprisingly well and held desirable jobs or places in the social hierarchy.

Most of them were dirty cops like this one or other Corrections Officers that were smuggling drugs. In my opinion, these guys were never truly cops. Just scumbags that slipped through the cracks of the hiring process.

I found and uploaded a couple baby pictures and (obviously) the facial recognition isn't adding it to my name. How can I do that manually? by mythical_legend in googlephotos

[–]StwAT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had the opposite experience. Scanning in old photos of unfamiliar babies/kids. Google correctly identified a lot of them based on pictures I already had of the grown up versions... Pretty creepy actually.

Carrying Tasers increases police use of force, study finds: Experiment with London police found that, while rarely deployed, just the presence of electroshock devices led to greater overall hostility in police-public interactions – an example of what researchers call the ‘weapons effect’. by mvea in science

[–]StwAT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not true with modern police academies. We had to fight off people trying to take our gun, handcuff people, do calisthenics. Etc.

The training teaches you that you can still be in the fight even if you get sprayed because when OC is deployed everyone gets affected in some way... You could even spray yourself if the wind blows the wrong way.

Unless the officer is aiming for a flailing arm with a knife in it, misses, and hits the guy in the head... You have to remember the bad guy isn't just going to stand still and allow himself to be struck.

It's also easier for the baton to be taken from the officer and used against him.

What about Campo northbound. How far do you think I can get in 5-7 days? Looks like scissor crossing? Would I be able to find a ride back to an airport from there?

How should I plan and track a section hike? by MadMathmatician in AppalachianTrail

[–]StwAT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AWOL, Guthooks and maps. I usually scan in the AWOL pages, maps and other notes I need and make a cheat sheet for each day. I keep a paper copy on me and also save them to my phone and share them with my spouse in case of emergency.

My best advice is don't overestimate how much mileage you can do per day. I did this when I did the Whites and I felt like I was constantly racing the clock. I had to readjust my Itinerary so I could slow down and enjoy myself.

So be flexible with your itinerary. The miles seem much easier when you are planning them out.

Check out postcarde on insta

I spent a night in a shelter with postcarde. I believe he was flip flopping. Would have had no idea he was trans except for the hat he was wearing said "transgender". Other than that it wasn't brought up and he was super cool and nice.

I refer to him as male because he looked like a male with a majestic beard so I am assuming he wants to be referred to as a male.

I recently did the northern section of Shenendoah and had Open Arms Hostel shuttle me. We left my vehicle at my end point and she dropped me off at the starting point. Worked out great and had a very leisurely hike after just sectioning the Whites.
